Object: Are we going to have a rigged election?
The 2000 election was quite close. The Republican governor of the critical
state of Florida, then and now, is junior Bush's brother. The election
officials are political appointees.
A lot of contention has existed about honest vote counting in the state.
A firm designing and manufacturing computerized voting machines is headed by
a Republican activist and big money contributor, and the machines were
stupidly? designed not to create verifiable hard copy records, and the
company holds its computer code as an industrial secret.
A recent Florida scandal recently surfaced about voter lists, and a
"computer error" that erroneously excluded some voters from being eligible -
nearly all of them being blacks (i.e. Democratic voters). A cover up was
attempted. Who knows what other illegal, unethical measures are occurring?
Now this story surfaces about using police investigations in Florida to
frighten mostly poor, mostly elderly, black people from "getting out the
vote" activities.
Is the stink coming off this thing the fragrance of Bush Christian ethics,
as applied to politics?

Suppress the Vote? By BOB HERBERT NY Times Published: August 16, 2004
The big story out of Florida over the weekend was the tragic devastation
caused by Hurricane Charley. But there's another story from Florida that
deserves our attention.
State police officers have gone into the homes of elderly black voters in
Orlando and interrogated them as part of an odd "investigation" that has
frightened many voters, intimidated elderly volunteers and thrown a chill
over efforts to get out the black vote in November.
The officers, from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, which reports
to Gov. Jeb Bush, say they are investigating allegations of voter fraud that
came up during the Orlando mayoral election in March.
Officials refused to discuss details of the investigation, other than to say
that absentee ballots are involved. They said they had no idea when the
investigation might end, and acknowledged that it may continue right through
the presidential election.
"We did a preliminary inquiry into those allegations and then we concluded
that there was enough evidence to follow through with a full criminal
investigation," said Geo Morales, a spokesman for the Department of Law
Enforcement.
The state police officers, armed and in plain clothes, have questioned
dozens of voters in their homes. Some of those questioned have been
volunteers in get-out-the-vote campaigns.
I asked Mr. Morales in a telephone conversation to tell me what criminal
activity had taken place.
"I can't talk about that," he said.
I asked if all the people interrogated were black.
"Well, mainly it was a black neighborhood we were looking at - yes,'' he
said.
He also said, "Most of them were elderly."
When I asked why, he said, "That's just the people we selected out of a
random sample to interview."
Back in the bad old days, some decades ago, when Southern whites used every
imaginable form of chicanery to prevent blacks from voting, blacks often
fought back by creating voters leagues, which were organizations that helped
to register, educate and encourage black voters. It became a tradition that
continues in many places, including Florida, today.
Not surprisingly, many of the elderly black voters who found themselves face
to face with state police officers in Orlando are members of the Orlando
League of Voters, which has been very successful in mobilizing the city's
black vote.
The president of the Orlando League of Voters is Ezzie Thomas, who is 73
years old. With his demonstrated ability to deliver the black vote in
Orlando, Mr. Thomas is a tempting target for supporters of George W. Bush in
a state in which the black vote may well spell the difference between
victory and defeat.
The vile smell of voter suppression is all over this so-called investigation
by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
Joseph Egan, an Orlando lawyer who represents Mr. Thomas, said: "The Voters
League has workers who go into the community to do voter registration, drive
people to the polls and help with absentee ballots. They are elderly women
mostly. They get paid like $100 for four or five months' work, just to
offset things like the cost of their gas. They see this political activity
as an important contribution to their community. Some of the people in the
community had never cast a ballot until the league came to their door and
encouraged them to vote."
Now, said Mr. Egan, the fear generated by state police officers going into
people's homes as part of an ongoing criminal investigation related to
voting is threatening to undo much of the good work of the league. He said,
"One woman asked me, 'Am I going to go to jail now because I voted by
absentee ballot?' "
According to Mr. Egan, "People who have voted by absentee ballot for years
are refusing to allow campaign workers to come to their homes. And
volunteers who have participated for years in assisting people, particularly
the elderly or handicapped, are scared and don't want to risk a criminal
investigation."
Florida is a state that's very much in play in the presidential election,
with some polls showing John Kerry in the lead. A heavy-handed state police
investigation that throws a blanket of fear over thousands of black voters
can only help President Bush.
The long and ugly tradition of suppressing the black vote is alive and
thriving in the Sunshine State.

Because Al Gore was trying to allow the FL SC to legisalet from the bench.
Even a person with high school civics under his belt knows that the judicial

What about large numbers of voters, mostly blacks, being denied voting

This has been shown to be a bogus assumption and claim.

Besides the USSC ruling?
The FL Legislature set the ate the vote was to be tallied. The FL SC tried

True... and seeing as how, if I remember correctly, they were all Democrats
on the FLSC... I'm not surprised they tried to help Al steal the election.

Why must we play to a particular race?
What have Dem's actually done for blacks?

In the case of the Florida elections, they knew that the military would
ensure a victory for the Republicans, so Dem's did everything possible to
deny military absentee ballots from going through.

Which way, and what's your data source?
Do you think military

Blacks mostly vote Demo and everybody knows that.

Why must we play to a particular race?
What have Dem's actually done for blacks?
It was a Republican that ended slavery.

Are you justifying keeping them from voting?

However, whatever way they vote, it's illegal to deny people their

voting

rights.

Then why did Dem's want to deny military members their rights?

I don't thin they did. What's your evidenc eand sources?

How about the military who were denied voting?

Who or what caused that?
Do you think the military vote is heavily titlted one way or another?

In the case of the Florida elections, they knew that the military would
ensure a victory for the Republicans, so Dem's did everything possible to
deny military absentee ballots from going through.

I doubt the military vote splits more than 60 or 65 pct in favor of either
party.
What are your sources?

Wasn't it Asspry who just said "Bye..:o)" in the paragraph above.
Looks like Asspry doesn't have the self-control to walk away like he
said he was doing. Instead, he likes to continue to make an ***** of
himself.
Asspry acts like correctional officers are the only ones who have the
privilege to "arrest, do go on searches with state police, and so
forth". I can arrest people and I'm not a correctional officer. A
local community not far from here even encourages local citizens to
ride with their officers on saturday night. And, I've assisted state
police with searches - it's not a big deal, it's rather boring
actually.
I guess he thinks he has come privilege that no one else does. Of
course this only further proves how stupid he really is.

You only prove you are uneducated, even concerning your job.
Bet you can't prove your idiotic comments about how you have some
"power" other citizens don't. Also, tell us what you said before about
how you are guilty of a crime if you don't turn in someone you know
committed a crime.
Pathetic wannabe cops...

What does Ospry get from saying something like this? Does he

I was wondering if you felt inferior when you got spanked on your

lack

of

knowledge on corrections and corrections being law enforcement.
Hell, I never even did get to the part where I talked about how

Correctional

Officers have the power to arrest, do go on searches with state

police, and

so forth..:o)

As does any private citizen.

Exactly. Osprey is just a power hungry guard with no power.

So a private citizen has the power to arrest,

I have the same authority and power as a state trooper, a private citizen
does not.
If you have any questions you can contact the state legislators in Delaware.
" Delaware Correctional Officers have full police powers as defined by the
Delaware Code whether supervising offenders at any place within the State,
while going to or returning from such duty, and while searching for escaped
offenders."
Or talk to Paul Howard, who made that above statement.
He is the Bureau Chief

You are dumb as a rock. You just proved you don't have the same
"powers." According to that statement, these "powers" are only (1)
when supervising offenders (inmates), and (2) or while searching for
escaped offenders (inmates.) You are neutered.

Or talk to Paul Howard, who made that above statement.
He is the Bureau Chief

Since he doesn't determine what "powers" you have, why would we do that?

We have the SAME powers as a state trooper...going to our place of duty,

FULL powers.
You are getting more and more stupid as this goes on.
Now, you have been proven wrong on
a) your comparison of a security guard to a correctional officer
b) your lack of knowledge on Corrections and saying we are not law
enforcement.
c) your lack of knowledge of the merit system and pay
How much more stupid can you get?
