Atheist might squirm on this - Mathematics Proves Christ's Resurrection? |
It is faith, not proof, that makes Christians believe in Jesus Christ's
resurrection, the central tenet of the religion. Until now. Oxford
University professor Richard Swinburne, a leading philosopher of
religion, has seemingly done the impossible. Using logic and
mathematics, he has created a formula that he says shows a 97 percent
certainty that Jesus Christ was resurrected by God the Father, report
The Age and Catholic News.
This stunning conclusion was made based on a series of complex
calculations grounded in the following logic:
1. The probably of God's existence is one in two. That is, God either
exists or doesn't.
2. The probability that God became incarnate, that is embodied in human
form, is also one in two.
3. The evidence for God's existence is an argument for the
resurrection.
4. The chance of Christ's resurrection not being reported by the
gospels has a probability of one in 10.
5. Considering all these factors together, there is a one in 1,000
chance that the resurrection is not true
"New Testament scholars say the only evidences are witnesses in the
four gospels. That's only five percent of the evidence," Swinburne said
in a lecture he gave at the Australian Catholic University in
Melbourne. "We can't judge the question of the resurrection unless we
ask first whether there's reason to suppose there is a God. Secondly,
if we have reason to suppose he would become incarnate, and thirdly, if
he did, whether he would live the sort of life Jesus did." He says that
even Jesus' life is not enough proof. However, the resurrection is
"God's signature," which shows "his approval of Jesus' teaching." The
calculations that Swinburne says prove the resurrection are detailed in
his book, "The Resurrection of God Incarnate."
Has proof of part of the New Testament been found? Check out what
archaeologists discovered in a cave in Israel.
Archaeologists have found a cave where they believe John the Baptist
anointed many of his disciples, offering extraordinary proof of a
central New Testament figure and his theology.
The Associated Press reports that the cave is located on the Kibbutz
Tzuba, which is 2-1/2 miles from Ein Kerem, John the Baptist's hometown
that is now part of Jerusalem. The cave includes a huge cistern with 28
steps that lead to an underground pool of water. Some 250,000 pottery
shards were also found and are presumed to be remnants of small water
jugs used in the Christian baptismal ritual performed by the fiery New
Testament preacher. Wall carvings etched into the cave tell John's life
story; they were likely made by monks in the fourth or fifth century.
In addition, a stone was found in the cave that researchers believe was
used for ceremonial foot washing.
"John the Baptist, who was just a figure from the Gospels, now comes to
life," British archaeologist Shimon Gibson, who supervised the dig
outside Jerusalem, exclaimed to AP. He is the head of the private
Jerusalem Archaeological Field Unit and has written a book on the
subject titled "The Cave of John the Baptist." In a separate interview,
Gibson told Reuters, "Nothing like this has been found elsewhere. It is
the first time we have finds from the early baptismal period. It is an
amazing discovery that happens to an archeologist once in a lifetime."
But because there were no inscriptions found in the cave, some experts
insist there is no proof that John the Baptist ever set foot in it.
Instead, they think Byzantine-era monks commemorated John at this site
linked to him by local tradition. Gibson heartily disagrees, insisting
the carvings, foot washing stone, and other artifacts provide strong
circumstantial evidence that the cave was actually used by John and is
not just a memorial to him.
John the Baptist was a contemporary of Jesus Christ and was known as a
somewhat bizarre, long-haired character who preached a message of
redemption. Since he is considered one of the most important figures in
Christianity, the discovery--if it can be confirmed--would be among the
most significant breakthroughs for biblical scholars in memory, reports
AP.
Gibson thinks the cave appealed to John because it contained an
immersion pool. "It apparently was adopted by John the Baptist, who
wanted a place where he could bring people to undergo their rituals,
pertaining to his ideas of baptism," he told AP. The baptismal
candidates would have walked down the 28 stone steps, discarded their
clothes in a niche carved into the wall, and then placed their right
foot onto a stone that contained an imprint of a foot. A small
depression to the right of the imprint would have contained oil, to be
poured over the foot for cleansing.
Gibson thinks John the Baptist used the cave in the early years of his
ministry when he sought solitude in the wilderness. "In addition to
John the Baptist, there's a possibility that Jesus used this cave as
well," Gibson explained to Reuters.

I believe. I had to take a "pre-teaching speach test" when I got to the
college I attended.
Part of it was a lesson plan so I presented the lesson plan for people who
forgot to prepare a lesson plan.
In it I used math and physics to prove that you can't pick up a piece of
chalk.
F = MM/d^2 and as d approaches zero F tends towards the infinite.
It must be true because he passed me without having to read outloud from a
book.

And I believe that the person that originally wrote it did it as a gag

F = MM/d^2 and as d approaches zero F tends towards the infinite.
However, a simple algebraic step shows that MM also approaches 0.
F = MM/d^2 => F * (d^2) = (MM * (d^2)) / d^2 => F * d^2 = MM
And anyone with the slightest knowledge of Algebra could have and
should have called you on it.
It must be true because he passed me without having to read outloud from a
book.
Which shows that your prof did not know much about mathematics.

Perhaps I should have written M1 and M2 but that is the equation (without a
constant) defining the attraction between two masses.
The M's don't change mass. The algebra in the equations is correct and in
fact the attraction between two bodies does increase as the distance between
them diminishes.

I thought that equation looked familiar. I just have not had a physics
class in over 20 years, so I have forgotten some of the simple, base
equations.
And that is a basic precept for science. Always define your variable,
and label/name your equations. Many of them look very similar but have
very different meanings.
The M's don't change mass.
On the same principle that you were using, I showed that they do. :-)
The algebra in the equations is correct and in
fact the attraction between two bodies does increase as the distance between
them diminishes.
Yes, that I do remember. Math and science were my strong suits in
life. That is why I was saying that anyone with the slightest
knowledge of algebra should have called you on your premise, because
slight changes to the way the equation was written cause major changes
in how it acts, in this case.

Mathematics by itself proves nothing about the real world that is no
implicit in the assumptions that one is arguing from.
So that, in effect, the OP is saying arguing that if one assumes
Christ's resurrection, that assumption is sufficient to deduce Christ's
resurrection.
By the same sort of argument, one can "prove" absolutely anything, e.g.,
the the Christ is the Anti-Christ.

You've actually heard it?
I wish I'd bought it, simply for the novelty value, but I just listened
to a few of the tracks at the used cd store I found it in. It was quite
the musical experience.
Imagine a lounge act.
Now think of the song, "Smoke on the water" (not sure that's the actual
title, but you get the picture)
Now combine the two.

Do the math, Einstein...Swinburn's own numbers work out to a one in four

What evidence? I have seen none and I have asked for years.
4. The chance of Christ's resurrection not being reported by the
gospels has a probability of one in 10.
That came from nowhere. What are the chances of any other event not
being so reported? Any event at all?
Where is the proof your 'gospels' are valid to any degree at all?
5. Considering all these factors together, there is a one in 1,000
chance that the resurrection is not true
What would be the odds of the resurrection of a dead hamster?
"New Testament scholars say the only evidences are witnesses in the
four gospels. That's only five percent of the evidence," Swinburne said
in a lecture he gave at the Australian Catholic University in
Melbourne. "We can't judge the question of the resurrection unless we
ask first whether there's reason to suppose there is a God. Secondly,
if we have reason to suppose he would become incarnate, and thirdly, if
he did, whether he would live the sort of life Jesus did." He says that
even Jesus' life is not enough proof.
Exactly where is the proof such a person ever existed?
However, the resurrection is
"God's signature," which shows "his approval of Jesus' teaching." The
calculations that Swinburne says prove the resurrection are detailed in
his book, "The Resurrection of God Incarnate."
Sure. Want to buy a bridge?
Has proof of part of the New Testament been found? Check out what
archaeologists discovered in a cave in Israel.
Archaeologists have found a cave where they believe
Opps. Proof does not involve belief.
John the Baptist
anointed many of his disciples, offering extraordinary proof of a
central New Testament figure and his theology.
The Associated Press reports that the cave is located on the Kibbutz
Tzuba, which is 2-1/2 miles from Ein Kerem, John the Baptist's hometown
that is now part of Jerusalem.
Exactly where is the proof any such person ever existed?
The cave includes a huge cistern with 28
steps that lead to an underground pool of water. Some 250,000 pottery
shards were also found and are presumed to be
Another guess. Why not presume they are simply broken pots near a
pool of water that may have been used for a long period?
remnants of small water
jugs used in the Christian baptismal ritual performed by the fiery New
Testament preacher. Wall carvings etched into the cave tell John's life
story; they were likely made by monks in the fourth or fifth century.
Do you mean several hundred years after the supposed events occurred?
How can this prove anything?
In addition, a stone was found in the cave that researchers believe was
used for ceremonial foot washing.
Or not, depending on what you believe.
"John the Baptist, who was just a figure from the Gospels, now comes to
life,"
Yet I have seen no proof he ever existed.
British archaeologist Shimon Gibson, who supervised the dig
outside Jerusalem, exclaimed to AP. He is the head of the private
Jerusalem Archaeological Field Unit and has written a book on the
subject titled "The Cave of John the Baptist."
Which he obviously hopes to sell or he would not have written it.
In a separate interview,
Gibson told Reuters, "Nothing like this has been found elsewhere. It is
the first time we have finds from the early baptismal period. It is an
amazing discovery that happens to an archeologist once in a lifetime."
Hipe to sell a book.
Nonsense. First prove such a person ever existed.
Circumstantial evidence proves nothing.
John the Baptist was a contemporary of Jesus Christ and was known as a
somewhat bizarre, long-haired character who preached a message of
redemption.
Where is the proof either one ever existed?
Since he is considered one of the most important figures in
Christianity, the discovery--if it can be confirmed--would be among the
most significant breakthroughs for biblical scholars in memory, reports
AP.
Gibson thinks the cave appealed to John because it contained an
immersion pool. "It apparently
More qualification but still no proof. Just guesswork.
I wonder how a non-christian would interpret the same findings.
was adopted by John the Baptist, who
wanted a place where he could bring people to undergo their rituals,
pertaining to his ideas of baptism," he told AP.
Again, all guesswork based on nothing.
Gibson thinks
But has presented no proof.
John the Baptist used the cave in the early years of his
ministry when he sought solitude in the wilderness. "In addition to
John the Baptist, there's a possibility that Jesus used this cave as
well," Gibson explained to Reuters.
And more of a possibility neither of them (if they ever existed) ever
came anywhere near this location. The is certainly nothing to
indicate they did.
What does this have to do with abortion? Could it be Fishbreath is
off topic yet again?

All the replies that showed your idiocy, bonehead.
I don't think he realizes that by now mocking what he's posted, he's
mocking his belief in the resurrection. He just can't win coming or
going.
ROFL
You will say and do anything.
And you will comprehend and understand nothing.
Are you still fantasizing about men in dresses Adam? Still going to
those homosexual newsgroups and transvestite newsgroups?
Why don't you explain your purpose being in those newsgroups?
Which ones, Mary Anne? You know so much more about them, after all.

So Heishman the Liar is posting ***** about his Great Sky Fairy.....
How quaint. Looks like I hit a nerve based on the fact that it would appear
that he began four separate threads of his inane preaching, unsupported
assertions and idiotic *****.
For the record, Heishman, and I know you're reading this: the only thing
about all of your nonsense that "makes an atheist squirm" is knowing that
adults believe such childish tripe, yet you are allowed to breed without
supervision.
It's one thing to have "faith." As silly as it (faith in any diety) is
considered by an atheist, having a faith at some level concerns us very
little, if at all. Private faith is a private matter (read Matthew 6:4 to
6:7), and how a man finds his comfortable place in this universe is of no
consequence to us....more power to 'em.
It's the people, those god-soaked lunatics like you and the Inbred Phelps
Family, for example, that insist that your dogma is the TRUTH(tm) (i.e.
proven with evidence) that we have a problem with.
You're much less intelligent than we are, so it's not as though you can out
think us. You have no ethics, so you can only "out wit" us by being
dishonest, not by having a solid argument or evidence.
The only thing you have going for you is that you outnumber us, and we never
underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.
You idiots only 'win' because, when your arguments fall like a house of
cards, you resort to either force, or stupidity inundation, whereupon we
just throw up our hands, exasperated.
Then you breed yet another generation of idiots, genetically predisposed to
being just as stupid as you are, and brainwashed of any innate intelligence
they may have gotten from their mother because they are exposed to a
worthless ***** like you on a daily basis.
You are not advancing the human species. you and your ilk are retarding it.
A scientists would only have to study idiots like you and your collective
spawn to see reverse-evolution in action.
Go back to your word games, because you aren't worth a ***** at anything
else.
Isn't he great? Now that he's gotten spanked on this, he's falling
back to the old "Ho ho, it was just a joke, ho ho, I'm so funny"
*****.
Got spanked? When? Who?
Did you not read the title?

It was deliberate, it couldn't have been any plainer as to the purpose
of the post.

The ones you frequent. I haven't been in any of them, not on purpose or

you tried to pass that off as me. Pathetic, but then again..you are
pathetic.
