parishioners at two local churches woke up Thursday to find vandals had
put stuffed monkeys in the place of baby Jesus in the mangers of the
Nativity scenes they had put outside.
At St. Dominic Church on Flanders Road, the baby Jesus was also stolen,
said police spokesman Sgt. Lowell DePalma.
At St. Aloysius, the manger had been empty because the church waits
until just before Christmas to put out the baby Jesus, he said. But
someone stole the statue of the Virgin Mary from the Nativity scene
sometime Thursday night, DePalma said.
It was not clear if the vandalism at the two churches, which are at
opposite ends of town, was related.
"I announced what happened at 8 a.m. Mass today, and you could see
people's reaction and hear gasps," said the Rev. Kevin Dillon, the
priest at St. Aloysius. "There was disbelief and sadness. Why someone
would do this to our community I can't understand. It's in bad taste
and hurtful to happen just before one of our most important holy days."
"I hope a prank is all it is and there is not some anti-Christmas or
anti-Christian message," Dillon said. He said the statue of the Virgin
Mary cannot be replaced before Christmas.
Officials at St. Dominic could not be reached on Friday for comment.
The theft of baby Jesus from Nativity scenes is something police around
the state and the nation have seen, and some say it is an annual
phenomenon. Earlier this month, vandals stole the baby Jesus from
scenes on the town green in Waterbury and Naugatuck.

I actually think this is great. The "baby Jesus" in this case was only
a costly plaster or wax or fibreglass statue, nothing of major
importance.
Okay, sure, it's theft. And, yes, it shocked the congregation.
But as a Roman Catholic, I'm not so sure that's all that bad. There's
an awful lot of routine in the practice of Christian faith. There are a
lot of rituals and habits formed. It's easy with all of that for
Christians to let their sense of wonderment at the teachings of the
faith wane over the years. Routine often replaces wonderment. Habits
often gradually take the place of genuine, zealous faith and a desire
for Christian charity and love.
If a few kids - or senior citizens hopped up on prescription meds -
decide on a lark to take a baby Jesus statue from a nativity scene and
shock Christians out of their complacency, well, I say, "Good for
them."
I hope those thieves, vandals, pranksters or whatever you want to call
them have put their newly-acquired baby Jesus statue somewhere
prominent like above the mantlepiece at their frat house or something.
Then, as they look upon the statue over the years, they may start to
wonder about this Christian faith.
Who knows? Those who were so eager to take a baby Jesus statue may one
day find the real Jesus knocking at the door of their hearts, ready to
transform their lives.
Forgive them? Okay, sure. No problem. I'll even do you one better.
I hope God blesses them and uses their actions to transform their lives
and re-invigorate the faith of the Christians at that parish.

Cry me a river. I paid $60 for *two* glass seats at The Summit twelve seasons
ago...and that team is still around today. (Dale and I have had season
tickets since the season after those two $30 seats, and we're paying $15 a
game for the two of us these days downtown at the Toybox.)
