Bush cheered at Catholic convention
By Phil Magers
UNITED PRESS INTERNATIONAL
Dallas, TX, Aug. 3 (UPI) -- President George W. Bush Tuesday pledged
to continue his fight against same-sex marriage in a speech embraced
by cheers at an international meeting of Roman Catholics.
Bush was greeted with chants of "four more years" and long strings of
applause during his 30-minute address at the 122nd annual convention
of the Knights of Columbus, which has 1.2 million members in the
United States.
More than 2,000 delegates and their families heard Bush thank the
group for its support and restate his stand on issues of importance to
Catholic voters.
The Republican president, seeking re-election in this year's hotly
contested race, made no reference to the election or his Catholic
opponent, Democrat John Kerry.
"A few activist judges have taken it upon themselves to redefine the
institution of marriage by court order," he said. "I support a
constitutional amendment to protect the sanctity of marriage by
insuring that it is always recognized as the union of a man and woman
as husband and wife."
Bush thanked the Knights of Columbus for supporting "the culture of
life" and reminded them that he signed a law last November to "end the
brutal practice of partial-birth abortion," which brought another
round of applause from the crowd.
"This law is constitutional. This law is compassionate," he said.
"This law is urgently needed and my administration will vigorously
defend it in the courts."
Bush said he would also work with Congress to pass "a comprehensive
and effective ban" on human cloning.
"Human life is a creation of God, not a commodity to be exploited by
man," he told the friendly audience.
Bush also said he was committed to ending federal government
discrimination against faith-based charities. He said he became
frustrated with inaction in Congress and signed an executive order two
years ago mandating equal treatment.
"We're making progress," he said. "We're using federal taxpayers'
money for effective use in helping to save lives. We're providing a
social network of loving -- helping loving souls interface with people
so they can realize a better tomorrow."
The Knights of Columbus distribute about $130 million annually to
charities around the world. They raise funds for causes such as mental
retardation, the Special Olympics, food for the needy, education
programs and disaster assistance.
As Bush concluded his speech and shook hands with some in the crowd,
another chorus of "four more years" broke out in the crowd. He then
exited the hall for a flight to his ranch.
George Flake, a Knights of Columbus member from Culver, Ore., said he
was impressed by the address.
"I thought he reached out to us in a very Christian way, and I thought
it was very good, very American," he said.
Dale Heger, of Greenburg, Ind., said he agreed with the ideas
expressed by the president.
"His ideals are about the same as the Knights of Columbus' are and
he's not a Catholic and not a member," he said. "Still, we speak the
same language."
In his introduction, Carl A. Anderson, supreme knight of the Knights
of Columbus, thanked Bush for his stands against partial-birth
abortion and same-sex marriage.
"Thank you for restoring moral integrity to the office of president,"
he said, pumping up the crowd for the president.
Bush was the first president to accept an invitation to the convention
in recent years. It's the custom of the Knights of Columbus to invite
the head of state wherever they meet. Kerry was not invited to the
meeting, a spokesman said.
Dozens of cardinals and bishops from around the world were in
attendance at the three-day meeting of the Knights of Columbus, which
has 1.7 million members worldwide.
Catholic voters amount to about 23 percent of the U.S. electorate and
both presidential candidates are aiming to attract as many of them as
possible.
Allan Saxe, a political science professor at the University of Texas
at Arlington, said the Catholic vote could be crucial this year in
swing states like Michigan, Pennsylvania and Ohio, but there is a
certain irony in this year's election on the religious issue.
"We have a protestant who may appeal to some parts of the Catholic
vote more than the Catholic will," he said.
Bush, a Methodist, has obvious appeal to many Catholic voters with his
conservative stances. On the other hand, Kerry, the Catholic, is in
disfavor with some bishops because of his support for abortion rights.
Saxe said Catholics are more representative of the general voting
population today than they were decades ago.
"It's much more split than it was perhaps 25 or 30 years ago," he
said. "There are other issues that come into play than simply the old
issues that galvanized the Catholic community, such issues as
economics, jobs, and in this day and age, terrorism and security."
The only sign of Kerry at the hotel was outside where a group of
Dallas County Democrats rallied for their candidate.
Before arriving at the convention, Bush attended a noon reception at
private home in North Dallas where he raised $1.6 million for the
Republican National Committee's Victory 2004 campaign.

The closer we get to the election, the more sedition, treason,
and death threats against the President we'll see from
the liberals. Especially as they realize Bush will more than likely
win.

Friday, confession every Sunday, no birth control, no divorce.
And plenty of sex with altar boys.

Sorry to disappoint you, but he did not. Besides, everyone knows most
fondling occurred during the permissive era of Clinton. Now that my people
are in power, that behavior was exposed and will no longer be tolerated.
