Columbus Day 2005: Where are all the Indians? |
They're dead, that's where they are; and Christopher Columbus can take
full credit as the symbol of their demise. Genocide on an unprecedented
scale was perpetrated on these poor people from which they have never
been able to recover. Nobody, and I do mean NOBODY, got it worse than
the Native-American population. That is the legacy of Christopher
Columbus.

Actually the so-called genocide you referred to was mostly accomplished
without a conscious intention by the Eropeans, in that 90% or more of the
casualties were caused by the first wave of smallpox long before the
Europeans invaded the decimated areas. This is now believed to have been
brought ashore by a single infected person during Cortes invasion of Mexico.
Genocide means different things to different people. The automobile is an
instrument of genocide since it prevents the wise use of the land. certain
ethnic grouips control most of the automobiles. QED.

In "...Christopher Columbus can take full credit as the symbol of
their demise..." J Young confuses the metaphorical for the literally
attributable, which can be expected from the God-soaked. Oh, yeah,
then he calls it a legacy, which is a third category entirely.
Typical scatter shot attempt at provocation.

Plus, I believe J Young is one of these fundamentalist Christian Right

going to blame Christopher Columbus, you need to blame Jesus Christ.

There is still a lot of dispute about both Columbus the man, and the
Columbian legacy. We still teach Columbus in grade schools as a benevolent
explorer, yet his own diary very much contradict that notion. His beliefs
were the same as most of Europes of that period, the white race was blessed
by God and given dominion over the animals. Non-whites were animals. It is
known that he and his men killed dozens of natives during their visits to
the "New World". By his own words, his first encounters with said natives
were peaceful. His writings does not go into a lot of detail on the whys,
so it's not known exactly who caused the trouble.

What most people do not realise is that Columbus Day is no longer about
Columbus at all. The majority of all activities are about celebrating
Italian-American heritage. It has become the Italians' St. Patrick's
Day.

Since when? We have a rather large Italian community in my area, and they
don't celibrate Columbus Day as a personal holiday at all. For most people,
it's not even a day off work holiday, unless you're a government worker.
It has become the Italians' St. Patrick's

September 10, 1998
Americans Celebrate 27th Anniversary of Columbus Day
This year marks the 27th anniversary of the observation of Columbus Day
as a Legal, public holiday, reports the National Italian American
Foundation (NIAF).
House Representative Robert McClory (R-Illinois) proposed Public Law
90-363 on June 28, 1968. It Established the dates for several new
federal holidays, including Columbus Day. The bill was passed and went
into effect January 1, 1971, officially making Columbus Day the second
Monday in October every year.
This year also marks the 22nd anniversary of the designation of October
as Italian American Heritage Month. The proclamation was made in 1976 by
President Jimmy Carter.
http://www.usemb.se/Holidays/celebrate/Columbus.html
Americans might not have a Columbus Day if Christopher Columbus had not
been born in Italy. Out of pride for their native son, the Italian
population of New York City organized the first celebration of the
discovery of America on October 12, 1866. The next year, more Italian
Organizations in other cities held banquets, parades and dances on that
date. In 1869, when Italians of San Francisco celebrated October 12,
they called it Columbus Day.
In 1905, Colorado became the first state to observe a Columbus Day. Over
the next few decades other states followed. In 1937, then- President
Franklin Roosevelt proclaimed every October 12 as Columbus Day. Since
1971, it has been celebrated on the second Monday in October.
Although it is generally accepted that Christopher Columbus was the
first European to have discovered the New World of the Americas, there
is still some controversy over this claim. Some researchers and
proponents of other explorers attribute the first sightings to the early
Scandinavian Vikings or the voyages of Irish missionaries which predate
the Columbus visit in 1492. The controversy may never be fully resolved
to everyone's satisfaction, but 1992 marked the 500th anniversary of the
Columbus discovery.
http://www.sicilianculture.com/news/2002-october.htm
The year 2002 marks the 31st anniversary of the observation of Columbus
Day as a legal, public holiday. It also marks the 26th anniversary of
the designation of October as Italian American Heritage Month by the
President. The proclamation was made in 1976 by President Jimmy Carter.
The nation's estimated 25 million Italian Americans, the fifth largest
ethnic group in America, hold cultural and commemorative events in
Columbus' honor in October. "Columbus Day is not just a celebration of
Columbus' arrival, but a day Italian Americans share their heritage with
all Americans. Together we share a common heritage."
"In order to maintain our wonderful heritage, we must continue to
commemorate the achievements of many people such as Columbus," said NIAF
President Joseph R. Cerrell. "The Italian explorer inspires us to lead
lives of courage and determination."

What are too stupid to do the research yourself? You just have to
automatically call me a liar?
What do I need to research? There's an Italian community here that numbers
well over 2 million, and they do nothing special for Columbus Day. All I
have to do is ask them, or simply look out my door tomorrow. You just have
to go and make a boob out of yourself.

You just can't handle being wrong can you? "Here" does not represent all

On Columbus Day, which is celebrated on the second Monday in October,
the Albuquerque Italian community has a Spaghettata (spaghetti dinner).
This has been held at the Lady of Our Sorrow in Bernalillo, as are a
number of feast days and celebrations. The priest there is Italian, and
lets the community have use of the space and the kitchen. The
celebration of Columbus Day was begun by Italian immigrants in New York
in 1866. Other communities followed suit, and three years later the
Italians in San Francisco held a celebration on October 12th, and called
it Columbus Day. In 1937 President Franklin Delano Roosevelt declared
the day a national holiday. Although there has been much opposition to
the holiday in recent years, many Italian-Americans take this holiday as
an opportunity to celebrate Italian-American culture and heritage.
