Dayton calls his vote against Rice a statement against 'lying'

WASHINGTON - Sen. Mark Dayton said Tuesday he is voting against
Condoleezza Rice for secretary of state as a protest against what he
labeled the Bush administration's "lying" on Iraq.
"My vote against this nomination is my statement that this
administration's lying must stop now," Dayton said on the Senate floor,
a day before the Senate is expected to vote on Rice's nomination.
Dayton, a Minnesota Democrat, referred to an exchange at last week's
confirmation hearing, when Rice pointedly asked Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-
Calif., to question her "without impugning my credibility or my
integrity."
Dayton didn't take Rice's words to heart.
"I don't like to impugn anyone's integrity, but I really don't like
being lied to repeatedly, flagrantly, intentionally," he said. "It's
wrong. It's undemocratic, it's un-American, and it's dangerous.
"And it is occurring far too frequently in this administration. And this
Congress, this Senate must demand that it stop now."
Dayton was one of several Democratic senators to speak out against
Rice's nomination, although her confirmation appeared assured.
Dayton cited Rice's statements, before the Senate vote in 2002 to
authorize an invasion of Iraq, that Saddam Hussein was pursuing a
nuclear weapons program. Dayton voted against the invasion resolution.
He noted that a search has found no evidence of weapons of mass
destruction.
"She misled me about the situation in Iraq before and after the
congressional resolution in October, 2002, authorizing that war, a
resolution that I opposed," Dayton said. "She misled other members of
Congress about the situation in Iraq, members who have said that they
would have opposed that resolution if they had been told the truth."
Minnesota's other senator, Republican Norm Coleman, planned to speak in
favor of her nomination later Tuesday, his office said.

Not a thing.
But you know what is intersting. Rice is a brilliant person, she
scares a lot of those legislators because she takes no crap off of
anyone. Here is a powerful woman, who can handle her own, is extremely
experienced and educated, and she is more than qualified for the job.
You would think liberals, after all their screaming for support of
women, would be happy to see this woman in a high ranking position.
This goes to show you that they are not sincere in many of their
positions. They are just out to bash republicans. Personally I think
they too, are scared of Rice. She is powerful, intelligent, and can get
the job done. They want to see her out because she is so powerful...and
take a wild guess which female liberal senator she is a direct threat
too!!!!

I don't get the same impression. Rice can be a formidable opponent, but it
is Republicans I see most often pointing out that she is a woman (and isn't
the cabinet oh so diverse) and not only that, they are quick to point out
that she is black. Same with Colin and Thomas, except that they don't
point out that they are women.
Personally I think
they too, are scared of Rice. She is powerful, intelligent, and can get

I think you need to look back at Clinton as well. He made mention of
some of his nominations that were black women, and he made sure to
emphasize their sex and color.
Hell, one liberal in here said she was a token black. What the hell is
that suppose to mean?
Same with Colin and Thomas, except that they don't
point out that they are women.
That could largely be due to the fact that most often liberals make
mention on equal rights. So republicans are making sure they show that
they are being equal.
Rice, is an intelligent women who is a huge threat at this time to
democrats. They want so badly to line Hillary Clinton up for a shot at
President in 2008, and Rice is going to steal her thunder. That is a
threat, and they are trying desperately to knock her down.
I watched the hearing with her and the senate. I thought at first, the
senator's questions were fair, in regards to Iraq. I thought she was
showing Rice some respect. I even wanted to know what Rice's answers
were myself, I thought the questions were reasonable...up until she
started making it more personal and attacking her integrity. I really
admired how Rice remained calm and waited until it was her turn to
speak, and her response was right.
Personally I think
they too, are scared of Rice. She is powerful, intelligent, and can

And she lied repeatedly to America and to congress and the result is a
war in which 1400 Americans have died, tens of thousands of Iraqis
have been killed, and $300 billion has been wasted.

have committed so long as they call themself a republican.
