"No one expected airplanes being used as missiles"
Actually, not only DID they expect terrorist to use hijacked
planes as missiles, but they were already taking precautions
against just such an attack, and had been for some YEARS.
I believe the G8 wasn't even the G8 yet (they were still
G7) when anti-aircraft batteries started protecting their
meetings SPECIFICALLY against planes being used as
missiles.
Get real. They weren't worried about Iran sending
super-duper long range fighters & bombers to attack
them. They were worried about organized terrorist or
lone whack jobs piloting a plane into them.
"No one expected the Iraqi insugents to last as long"
Except the CIA predicted it before the war.
"No one expected the levee to break"
Not only was it expected, but it's documented! Going back
as early as 2001, there were published warning that this
EXACT SAME disaster would strike. It was only a matter
of time.
Coming up next:
E. Coli rampaging through American cities, killing people
by the hundreds of thousands (if not millions).
A devistating earthquake on the west coast, or even the
east coast, resulting in the same lack of leadership, the
same death toll as Katrina.
Oh; and more refugees. Lots & lots of more Americans
reduced to refugees.
Your turn is coming! It WILL happen to you, to your
loved ones.

Good because when a tornado or a fire hits you, you are dead meat and

Now thank Bush for wasting your taxes and putting you and your kids

I don't see any fault lines in the Charleston area.
http://quake.wr.usgs.gov/prepare/factsheets/NewMadrid/
The Mississippi Valley-"Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On"
In the winter of 1811-12, the central Mississippi Valley was struck by
three of the most powerful earthquakes in U.S. history. Even today,
this region has more earthquakes than any other part of the United
States east of the Rocky Mountains. Government agencies, universities,
and private organizations are working to increase awareness of the
earthquake threat and to reduce loss of life and property in future
shocks.
The 400 terrified residents in the town of New Madrid (Missouri) were
abruptly awakened by violent shaking and a tremendous roar. It was
December 16, 1811, and a powerful earthquake had just struck. This was
the first of three magnitude-8 earthquakes and thousands of
aftershocks to rock the region that winter.
Severe shaking accompanied the powerful New Madrid earthquakes that
struck during the winter of 1811-1812. By winter's end, few houses
within 250 miles of the Mississippi River town of New Madrid
(Missouri) remained undamaged.
Survivors reported that the earthquakes caused cracks to open in the
earth's surface, the ground to roll in visible waves, and large areas
of land to sink or rise. The crew of the New Orleans (the first
steamboat on the Mississippi, which was on her maiden voyage) reported
mooring to an island only to awake in the morning and find that the
island had disappeared below the waters of the Mississippi River.
Damage was reported as far away as Charleston, South Carolina, and
Washington, D.C.
These dramatic accounts clearly show that destructive earthquakes do
not happen only in the western United States. In the past 20 years,
scientists have learned that strong earthquakes in the central
Mississippi Valley are not freak events but have occurred repeatedly
in the geologic past. The area of major earthquake activity also has
frequent minor shocks and is known as the New Madrid seismic zone.
Earthquakes in the central or eastern United States affect much larger
areas than earthquakes of similar magnitude in the western United
States. For example, the San Francisco, California, earthquake of 1906
(magnitude 7.8) was felt 350 miles away in the middle of Nevada,
whereas the New Madrid earthquake of December 1811 (magnitude 8.0)
rang church bells in Boston, Massachusetts, 1,000 miles away.
Differences in geology east and west of the Rocky Mountains cause this
strong contrast.

Or, in the "middle coast". The most likely places for devastating
earthquakes are the San Andreas fault (California), the New Madrid fault
(Arkansas/Missouri), and Charleston, SC. If a strong earthquake with an
epicenter on the southernmost part of the New Madrid were to hit, it
would be bye-bye Memphis. One near the northern end of the fault would
impact St. Louis. Cities like Blytheville, AR, Jonesboro, AR, and Cape
Girardeau, MO would be levelled to nothing.
Here's a frightening scenario: Say a Cat 5 hurricane strikes Charleston
dead on, and about a week later a 9.0 earthquake epicentered on
Charleston occured.
I don't see any fault lines in the Charleston area.
Charleston, SC. I should have clarified.

Charleston, MO, is also susceptible to quakes.

We were on the same page, as that's where I was looking.

The meizoseismal area of MM intensity X effects is an elliptical area,
roughly 35 by 50 kilometers, trending northeast between Charleston and
Jedburg and including Summerville. Middleton Place, about in the
center of this ellipse, is at the southeast end of a zone (perhaps 15
kilometers long) of microearthquake activity that still continues
today. This seismic activity may be a continuation of the 1886
aftershock series.
/end
Aftershocks which continue for well over 100 years???!!!!!
I didn't find any indications of fault lines which was what I was
looking for, so the Charleston, SC earthquake was a surprise.
The above article goes on to explain further:
The intraplate epicenter of this major shock is not unique for large
earthquakes in the Eastern and Central United States. Other intraplate
earthquakes include those at Cape Ann, Massachusetts (1755), and New
Madrid, Missouri (1811-1812). Earthquakes occurring along boundaries
of plates (e.g., San Francisco, 1906) are well understood in terms of
plate tectonics, but those occurring within plates are not similarly
understood. This problem still is being studied more than 100 years
after the earthquake.
/end
It didn't occur to me stress factors can build up within a plate-not
that I pay much attention to earthquakes in the first place. But
fault lines and plate slippage is what comes to mind when the topic
arises.
Charleston, MO, is also susceptible to quakes.
