Jury convicts 'evangelist' on sexual battery charges
DELAND -- Charles Balfe held up a Bible with numerous highlighted
verses explaining to a jury the verses supported the harsh discipline
he maintained in his DeLand home but denied using the Scriptures to
justify raping a woman he started molesting at 13.

In an October hearing, witnesses portrayed Balfe as a man who used
physical VIOLENCE, DEATH THRATS, BIBLE LECTURES and extreme discipline
to keep children quiet about his sexual ATTACKS. He BEAT the children
with walking STICKS, shoes and STOMPED on them when they fell to the
floor, a witness said.

Two women, one from Oklahoma and another from Kansas, also accused
Balfe of similar abuse in the 1960s and 1970s, supporting the DeLand
victim's testimony. .
"He quoted Scriptures and said that is what they did in the olden
days," said the 45-year-old woman from Kansas, who said Balfe started
molesting her when she was 3.
The Kansas woman said Balfe would sit her on his lap while he rubbed
his PRIVATE PARTS on her inside a car.
"He said he was PREPARING me to be a woman," the woman said.
