I did look at the full report. Of the 9,652 hate crime victims in 2006,
a full 0.89% were attacked for being Catholic. What an outrage! The only
religious groups less likely to be victimized were Protestants and
Atheists/Agnostics.
Yep, I really feel sorry for those poor, persecuted Catholics. Even among
religion motivated hate crimes, they only come in at 5%, while Jews
account for 65%. I wonder how many of those anti-Jewish attackers are
Catholic? Hmmmm... They don't give that statistic.
In all fairness, I will devote the next 100 microseconds to feeling sorry
for the Catholics. Okay, I'm over it. Now, how many people do you
suppose the Pope has killed, by telling them that condoms don't prevent
the spread of AIDS?

Young is playing the "percent increase" card without noting the basis
from which that increase is calculated. Considering that Catholics
make up a large percentage of religious (~33%?) in America, the fact
that they account for only 4.9% of religious hate crime victims mean
they are among the least likely to be attacked. Considering that
Muslims and Jews account for maybe 5% each, the fact that they account
for 12% and 65% (respectively) of the religious hate crime victims, it
is clear that these are the people being persecuted.
Atheists are a small percentage of the population and are hard to
identify (no special garments or grooming, very few buildings). It is
not that surprising that there would be fewer attacks on atheists in
terms of absolute numbers. In terms of likelihood of being attacked
they are probably at least as likely as Catholics.
Protestants are a diverse group so combining their numbers may distort
what is really happening. I am sure that attacks against Lutherans
and Episcopalians are probably zero. Most attacks against Protestants
have historically been against black churches.
Yep, I really feel sorry for those poor, persecuted Catholics. Even among

In Chicago, Catholics are famous for their racial prejudice and the
hate crimes they perpetrate.
