And I am going to counter with this. North Dakota is a state that has a
supermajority of republicans in office w/ the exception of the US Senate and
Congressmen where they are 100% democrat. North Dakota has the lowest paid
teachers in the country. It also has the highest exportation of its college
graduates to other states (meaning there are very few decent paying jobs in
the state). They have most of their small towns failing to stay alive, the
school districts are almost in a constant state of merger just to try and
keep a school nearby for the kids to attend w/o having to travel for more
than 2 hours on a bus. There are very few jobs within the state that offer
a comfortable lifestyle (by that I mean making more than $10/hour for each
spouse). Now tell me again how the Republicans are so good at business and
create so many jobs by their big spending. The worst thing is that I used
to be a Republican, I voted for Bush 1 and Bush 2 (and I believe that "W"
fairly won the election, there should have been MAYBE one recount w/ the
machines in ALL of the counties in Fl, not just the ones that were close,
sounds like the Libs were cherry picking ballots at that point if you ask
me). Then I started to LISTEN to the other side as well instead of trying
to tear apart every little comment they make and I found that I am more in
tune with the way the Dems like to run things. I disagree w/ them on many
issues too, I am a hunter so gun control is one big issue I don't agree on;
I am a Christian so I don't necessarily agree w/ their abortion stance; I
think we needed to go to Iraq eventually, but I think we went about it the
wrong way, I also think there are higher priority countries that we should
have dealt with first. Or is Bush just taking out Saddam because he is
afraid we wouldn't be able to handle Korea and Iran and Syria? Wouldn't the
countries that HAVE nukes be a bigger concern than those that may have been
able to attain nuclear devices within a few months?
The other thing that gets me is this whole Halliburton ordeal. It seems odd
to me that there would be a no bid contract given out to them just because
someone thinks that they are "the only ones who are capable of handling the
job..." That MIGHT be true, but how do they know unless the open the bids
to all contractors? The last time I checked contractors had to be able to
prove that they had the capabilities to complete an assigned job before
awarding a contract so we would have known for sure if Halliburton was the
only ones who were capable or not. Wouldn't that have been the democratic
way of doing things? Or are they saying that Halliburton is a monopoly and
should be "restructured" so that it is a competitive market for all the
other contractors as well? Either way the whole deal should be looked at
closely IMHO.

Kinda the whole assortment at once, I just replied to the wrong post, and
that is my fault (there, I can admit wrongdoing too, LOL). I don't agree w/
the name calling from either side. Both sides have good points on certain
issues and both sides need to pull their heads out of their asses on other
issues. That was kind of the point I was trying to get across. IMHO anyone
who votes for someone just because they are Republican or Democrat needs
some serious help. There are some awfully f*cked up people on both sides of
the table but some people are so blinded by their allegiance to their party
that they can't see the problems at hand (and I am speaking of noone in
particular here, so don't start calling me a Bush hater or a Clinton lover,
because I am neither, nor did I hate Clinton and love Bush, I have mixed
feelings about all of them)

Pretty obvious you don't live in New England... For a "lower middle
class" lifestyle, that third job should be a "step up"... voting for
the dems isn't any help when the local Micky-D's are starting at $10
per hour and the taxes for your 3-yr-old CAR run ya about $500 per
year... And if you're lucky enough to have a two wage-earner family
and manage to save enough to buy a house, you can pay an extra
$4,000-5,000 per year for the property taxes...
Sucking money from one group to pay another that doesn't work as hard
for what they get will never be appreciated by those that have to
pay...
And if you have a problem with the Pub's big spending, look up the
record of Byrd from WV... One of his many "classics" was getting an
interstate highway built that went nowhere...
I'm sure that his voters love him, but everyone else pays for BOTH
party's irresponsible spending and at least MOST non-government
related business actually produces something as a result of any
"breaks" they receive... and of course, create jobs that don't vanish
with the next appropriation from Congress...

Oh, I agree, there is dumb stuff that gets passed on both sides of the
aisle. For ND I think a change is needed, if for no other reason than to
get some new ideas in there. I also agree that if handouts shouldn't be a
free ride off my tax dollars. Now, I'm all for helping out those in need
due to uncontrollable causes, I just think that there are too many govenment
programs designed to help people STAY on welfare that could be working. I'd
rather pay $40k/year to send someone to schooling to learn a usable trade
than pay $20k/year for them to sit on their fat asses their whole life.
I guess (like I've kind of eluded to in earlier posts) that I am either a
liberal republican or a conservative democrat. I don't try to flip-flop on
issues, but if someone has a better point than I do, I can accept AND
acknowledge that. Hmm...maybe I should have ran for State Senate this year
like I planned....

really should have read it, all I did was point out how the Republican
system is not working in North Dakota. If that is so bad or if the

that I agree that Bush won the election fairly and legally. His is our
President, and though I don't always agree with him, I respect his decisions

friends in the Democratic party don't see things my way on this issue, so
there would have probably been a huge public outcry that we killed too many
innocent people during such an attack. I give Bush a lot of credit, he
lives by one of my favorite mottos: Do what you feel is the right thing and
stick with it, even if it is not the popular idea of the people. He is
doing that, even though many people (including myself) feel that some things
could have been done differently.
Well, enough of my rambling, you will probably just snip this one away as
well. That's fine, I can't make you read something you don't want to.

I hear you. Believe me, there's nothing funnier to me than American
politics. I'm new here, so I'm really just trying to figure it all
out.
I just get a little sick of the level of rhetoric in here. Although I
guess usenet known for its nutcases, not its geniuses. And, yeah, I
contributed nothing to the debate either. Guilty.
It just bugs the hell out of me that, somehow, the word liberal has
become a dirty word in America. It isn't a dirty word anywhere else,
and it has laudable roots: John Stuart Mill and Adam Smith were
liberals, and the US constitution is one of the cornerstones of
liberal thought.
Yet this prawn co-opts the word and makes his clever little move,
transmogrifying it into lieberal, as if liberals have a monopoly on
stretching the truth. His malapropism is typical of much of the right
wing rhetoric here, and, I fear, in the country in general.
The problem is that he's wrong. Our president is a fool. I think
history will show that. He seems to be in favor of an administration
that wants to curb our rights, not guarantee them.
I want a minimum of government intervention in my life. The
republican party used to stand for that. It doesn't any more. It's
become the party of religious fanaticism, anger, and hate.
And poor spelling, apparently.
