Richard Pope, an admitted ex-convict who was with the man beaten in an
alleged bias attack in Howard Beach, said yesterday that he was looking
to steal a car in the mostly white neighborhood but had not told his
two companions.
"They were there because I asked them," Pope said of his friends, Glenn
Moore, 22, and Richard Walker, 20. "They didn't know nothing. I was
going to steal a car. They had no knowledge of me wanting to steal a
car."
Pope, 25, who was interviewed on the street near his East New York
home, said he had been offered money - police say as much as $6,000 -
to steal a Chrysler 300. Asked whether he got paid in advance, he said:
"Nobody got no money. My pockets is flat broke."
Pope, the father of two young daughters, said because of his police
record he has only been able to work odd jobs. He said he served time
in prison after being convicted of a felony in 1998. He refused to say
what the crime was.
According to law-enforcement officials, Pope has five convictions since
1997 - for disorderly conduct, attempted assault, attempted criminal
sale of a controlled substance, criminal mischief and criminal
possession of marijuana.
Pope said the attack was simply a racist act. "We went out there in a
white neighborhood. A white kid sees three black guys, wants to start
trouble, gets his homeboys, chases us, catches one and beats him with a
bat."
Asked whether he didn't anticipate trouble, Pope said: "I can't predict
that some white guys are going to get rowdy. ... The point of the
matter is it was a racial attack, and my friend is still laying in the
hospital for it."
He complained police kept him and Walker at the 106th Precinct station
house from 3 a.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday.
Pointing in the direction of Howard Beach, he added: "Regardless of
what they say, it was these people who did the wrong. The wrong that I
intended to do never happened."
