This will unfortunately become the future of the American cities unless
Congress does something to stem the tide of illegals crossing into this

begin what the mayor calls one of the toughest crackdowns on illegal
immigrants anywhere in the United States.
"Illegal immigrants are destroying the city," said Mayor Lou Barletta, a
Republican. "I don't want them here, period."
Last week Barletta introduced, and the City Council tentatively approved, a
measure that would revoke the business licenses of companies that employ
illegal immigrants; impose $1,000 fines on landlords who rent to illegal
immigrants; and make English the official language of the city.
Barletta said he had no choice but to act after two illegal immigrants from
the Dominican Republic were charged last month with shooting and killing a
29-year-old man. Other recent incidents involving illegal immigrants have
rattled this former coal town 80 miles northwest of Philadelphia, including
the arrest of a 14-year-old boy for firing a gun at a playground.
"This is crazy," said Barletta, who took office in 2000. "People are afraid
to walk the streets. There's going to be law and order back in Hazleton and
I'm going to use every tool I possibly can."

In fact expediting illegal immigrants will hardly make the streets
saver.
You just create a greater number of people, wanting to avoid the law.
Unless one is able to find the illegals before they can join up,
organized crime will probably florish.

I would pick lettuce if someone would pay me at least half of that $50 a
head considering the current cost of living.

illegal immigration issue plays in Heartland America, Bilgeboob.

Actually, it is Bush who suggests guest worker status for all that entered the
country illegally. When I last checked, he had run as a Republican. Perhaps you
are right that the Dem's welcome them with open arms, but it is the GOP who is
suggesting that they hold the door open for them (illegals) and give them
presents.

Our immigration laws re: Latinos are racist indeed. There are quotas on
how many Latinos can come here a year. There are no quotas limiting any
other ethnic groups coming here. This is the same song that whites sang
in the 1880s about the Chinese laborers "they're taking all the good
jobs away from 'merkins". It was a lie then and it's a lie now. In the
1880s the Chinese were willing to work harder, faster and longer for
***** wages in usually dangerous jobs than white Americans were. The same
is true today in re Mexicans and other Latinos.
Elsewhere in this thread some highly uninformed moron was trying to
argue that the only factor in the market price of lettuce is labor, it's
not true because he was arguing wages, apparently he's never heard of
the United Farm Workers Union which demands and gets benefits for union
members including medical and retirement benefits. If the small farmer
(becoming more of an endangered species these days in the wake of
corporate farms) had to pay union wages, benefits etc they'd end up in
the poorhouse. Oh wait, the US doesn't have poorhouses that means they'd
end up on the streets as homeless as the street people.
