In coverage of Bush speech, CBS, NBC, and Fox News ignored apparent
gap between key Bush claim and events in Pakistan
Summary: In coverage of President Bush's September 5 speech,
during which he stated that the United States will not tolerate
nations that "harbor" terrorists, CBS' Evening News with Katie
Couric, NBC's Nightly News and Fox News' Special Report all ignored
reports from the same day that purported U.S. ally Pakistan has
signed a "peace deal" with local tribes reported to be allied with
the Taliban and Al Qaeda, agreeing that it will cease military
operations against them.

looks like the networks covered up another bush lie to the public.

Well, I did hear those reports on an American news source, CNN. So the
news media did not keep them secret. According to what I heard there,
the peace deal in Waziristan did include a clause allowing the Pakistan
government to continue its hunt for Osama bin Laden and any al-Qaeda
members in that area.
Unlike Iran, Pakistan is making an effort to participate in the war on
terror, despite walking a tightrope with public opinion in that
country.
It makes sense that the U.S. should put pressure on countries that are
openly its enemies, like Iran, and yet be understanding of countries
that are limited in what they can do because of a real possibility of
the government being overthrown. Yes, the major networks are definitely
*polite* to the President of the United States, and that may well be
partly in return for access, but they're not deceiving people by not
providing them what they need to think for themselves - about whether
this was a lie, or simply a... simplification required for the world of
sound bites.
