ATHENS: A middle-aged Greek man claiming to be the Apostle Paul, who
brainwashed youths into becoming his disciples, was sentenced
yesterday to 13 years in prison on charges of fraud and blackmail.
A self-styled exorcist and miracle worker, Panagiotis Kovas is accused
of luring seven youths to Romania, where he promised to involve them
in a church book-publishing business.
Instead he locked them up inside a house and blackmailed their parents
into sending him thousands of euros to keep them from harm's way.
"He was threatening to kill us and said he would poke our eyes out
with forks," one of the victims said.
"We turned into robots, mindless objects of his will," another youth
said.
Kovas insists the money was donated voluntarily and refutes the
charges. His lawyer promised to appeal.
