Bloomington, IN - Police in Bloomington, Indiana are investigating a
possible hate crime.
Several men on skateboards attacked a 25-year-old Bloomington resident
and his wife early Tuesday morning.
According to police reports, the newlyweds, who are both, black, were
leaving a restaurant when three or four men began yelling racial slurs
at them.
Disturbing crime
"That's messed up, it's disturbing. I can't believe that happened,"
says I.U. Student Max Hampton of the situation.
The unidentified victim and his wife were leaving a downtown bar when
they were approached by four or five men.
Bloomington Police Department Sergeant, David Drake says of the
incident, "It appears as if they were motivated by the race of the
victim. Obviously that's why they yelled racial slurs."
The 25-year-old black victim was beaten to the ground as his wife ran
for their car.
"She ran to their vehicle and got the vehicle and came back as the men
ran off and got her husband into the vehicle," says Sergeant Drake.
The victim was taken to Bloomington Hospital where he was treated for
cuts on the top and back of his head.
Two bones were dislocated in an arm as well.
Residents in Bloomington are shaking their heads over the attack.
"We like to think of Bloomington as kind a safe place for a lot of
different types of people, but sometimes reality kind of sets in here
and reminds us that it's really not," says I.U. Student Mark McSorley.
Bloomington strives hard to be known for a safe and civil community.
The recent incident soils that reputation.
"Certainly, with the Safe and Civil City Program that the city has and
the Human Rights Commission, we try to work hard from having these
things happen at all," says Barbara McKinney of the Bloomington Human
Rights Commission.
Investigation continues
The victim told police he thought he was attacked by a baseball bat.
However, his wife told police it was more like a skateboard.
They are investigating this case as a hate crime.
