NEW YORK -- Despite letters asking for leniency _ including one from
Cardinal Edward Egan _ an apologetic Roman Catholic monsignor was
sentenced to prison Friday for stealing more than $800,000 from his
Manhattan parish to finance vacations, country clubs and fancy
clothes.

"People across the street are sent to jail for stealing a can of
tuna," state Supreme Court Justice Bruce Allen said, referring to the
Manhattan Criminal Court Building as he sentenced Monsignor John
Woolsey to one to four years in prison.

Woolsey, 68, who was pastor of the Church of Saint John the Martyr on
the Upper East Side, pleaded guilty to grand larceny in return for the
sentence. He could have gotten up to 15 years in prison if convicted
at trial.
