The former co-pastor of a Russell County, Va., church entered a guilty
plea on Wednesday to charges of having a sexual relationship with a
teenage girl.
Matthew Smith, 31, of Lebanon, pleaded guilty to two counts of carnal
knowledge, taking indecent liberties with a child and sodomy, in
Russell County Circuit Court.
Smith had an ongoing relationship with the girl, who attended the
former Shepherd’s Fold Church where he was co-pastor and oversaw youth
activities.
The victim was 13 when the relationship began and turned 14 before it
ended when charges were filed last year, Russell County Assistant
Commonwealth’s Attorney Gay Leonard said Thursday.
