Object: John Edwards' Outreach To The Disabled
The claim made by John Edwards this week in Iowa that "We will stop
juvenile diabetes, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and other debilitating
diseases... When John Kerry is president, people like Christopher Reeve
are going get up out of that wheelchair and walk again," was described by
Charles Krauthammer (who is in a wheelchair) as the worst demagoguery in
decades.
Maybe Edwards' previous outreach to the disabled, which consisted of
patting a woman in a wheelchair on the head, just didn't wrap up that
demographic, so he had to promise them something to be delivered in John
Kerry's term as President, that modern medicine has been unable to deliver
after decades of trying. Edwards' Iowa statement should be brought up in
tonight's debate and President Bush should clear up the misconception
(perpetrated by the Democrats) that he has banned stem cell research. Bush
needs to make it clear that he not only has not banned it, but that he is
the first President ever to federally fund embyronic stem cell research.

Agreed that it's demagoguery, which is why I am voting
for a third-party ballot, however "Jesus is my favorite philospher"
was a demagoguery far worse than bringing Christopher Reeve
back to life.

It turns out that higher incidence of cancer risk has been
associated with use of stem cells. Perhaps also with diminished
capacity for immune system function, such as Christopher Reeve.

I'd be interested in any info you might have on this. Of course, it should
be noted that the antirejection drugs I'm on (and won't need if embryonic stem
cell research continues) have _both_ effects to a very large degree already.
BTW, the cancer thing is a result of the immune thing.

Poor lying Charles Krauthammer. What's his degree in, again? lol
Notice that the words that make Edwards correct have been snipped from the
middle of the quote.

... Intentionally on cell lines that are trash. Then he uses respect for
life as an excuse not to use blastocysts that are headed for the trash already. lol

And it's not all staid science. Irv Weissman, director of Stanford
University's Institute for Cancer and Stem Cell Biology, compares the
Bush administration's embryonic-stem-cell plan to Stalin's ban on
Darwinian science. His frustration is palpable throughout the talk.
"I can't attract fellows into going into a field that might be
criminalized," Weissman said.
The UC broadcast will give many viewers their first first-hand look at
the frustration of scientists who want to pursue embryonic-stem-cell
research and therapeutic cloning as a potential route to treatments for
spinal cord injuries, diabetes, Alzheimer's disease and other ailments.

I think Edwards is pandering to the dead vote, a loyal Democratic
constituency.

M.D. Harvard University 1975. Next stupid question...
