LIE ALERT! Isakson says he hasn't voted for tax increases... LIE ALERT! |
The Johnny Isakson Record on Taxes: The Real Story*
Johnny Isakson says in a TV ad that he wants to cut taxes if he is
elected to the U.S. Congress. He also says that he has "never voted to
raise taxes" in the state legislature. Mr. Isakson's record shows that
he has consistently voted to increase taxes and as a private citizen
has advocated tax increases statewide in Georgia and locally in Cobb
County. Let us look at a summary of the Record:
1) On February 22, 1985, the Atlanta Constitution reported that
Isakson wanted Georgians to pay 67% more for their car emission
inspections.
2) On October 25, 1990, the Atlanta Constitution reported that Isakson
voted for 14 state budgets, many of which included tax increases
3) On October 26, 1990, the Atlanta Constitution reported that Isakson
supported increasing taxes on gasoline, alcohol, and cigarettes. He
even voted for an increase in the hotel/motel tax to pay for the
Democratic National Convention.
4) On November 3, 1990, the Atlanta Constitution reported that Isakson
voted for a 1% sales tax increase in 1983. In the same article, it was
reported that Isakson supported an increase in the gas tax in 1987.
5) In 1996, Isakson supported a Georgia constitutional amendment that
allowed local school districts to impose a 1% sales tax increase for
school construction.
6) In 1998, Isakson was co-chairman of United for Kids. This campaign
committee successfully pushed a 1% sales tax increase in Cobb County
to pay for school construction and will cost taxpayers an estimated
600 million dollars. Also in 1998, Isakson supported Georgia Amendment
One that would have doubled the real estate transfer fee. This
referendum was defeated in the November election.
