Man wakes from 19-year coma |
One can only imagine the pain that Terry Schiavo's parents and other
loved ones must feel when they read these type of news accounts.
http://www.kansascity.com/450/story/134507.html
A railway worker who emerged from a 19-year coma woke to a radically
altered Poland and thinks "the world is prettier now" than it was
under communism, his wife said Sunday.
Gertruda Grzebska, 63, said that for years she fed her husband Jan
carefully with a spoon and moved his body to prevent bed sores.
"For 19 years he did not move or say anything," Grzebska told The
Associated Press by phone. "He tried to say things but it couldn't be
understood. Sometimes we pretended we understood."
"Now he spends his days sitting in a wheelchair and last weekend we
took him out for a walk in his wheelchair," she said.
"He was so amazed to see the colorful streets, the goods," she said.
"He says the world is prettier now" than it was 19 years ago, when
Poland was still under communist rule.
"I could not talk or do anything, now it's much better," Jan Grzebski,
65, told in TVN24 Television in a weak but clear voice, lying in bed
at his home in the northern city of Dzialdowo.
"I wake up at 7 a.m. and I watch TV," he said, smiling slightly.
Despite doctors' predictions that he would not live, his wife never
gave up hope and took care of him at home.
"I would fly into a rage every time someone would say that people like
him should be euthanized, so they don't suffer," she told local daily
Gazeta Dzialdowska. "I believed Janek would recover," she said, using
an affectionate version of his name.
"This is my great reward for all the care, faith and love," she told
the AP, weeping.
"He remembers everything that was going on around him," she said. "He
talks about it and remembers the weddings of our children. He had
fever around the time of the weddings, so he knew something big was
taking place."
In 1988, when Poland was still run by a communist government, Grzebski
fell into a coma after sustaining head injuries as he was attaching
two train carriages. Doctors also found cancer in his brain and said
he would not live. Grzebski's wife took him home.
Last October he fell sick with pneumonia and had to be hospitalized
again, Grzebska said.
Doctors' efforts led to the first signs of recovery.
"He began to move and his speech was becoming clearer, although I was
the only one to understand him," she said.
Intensive rehabilitation brought more effects.
"At the start, his speech was very unclear, now it is improving
daily," said Pstragowski, who predicted his patient would soon walk.
"I am sure that without the dedication of his wife, the patient would
not have reached us in the (good) shape that he did."

I nominate Gertruda Grzebska for "best wife a man could ever have".
Any seconds? Any other wives to nominate, or is it unamimous?
I wish I could have found a woman who would love me even half as much.
The song from the movie "The King and I":
<http://www.stlyrics.com/lyrics/thekingandi/somethingwonderful.htm>
expresses how I wish some woman would feel about me.
That's how a woman would truly love a man.
But nobody ever came close to loving me. I've been unloved all my life.
My life has never been worth living. There's no point in continuing the pain.
My current plan: (1) Finish burning my bridges; (2) Commit suicide.

Are you really so stupid that you cannot distinquish between recovering from
a coma and continuing to live? He may well yet die from the Cancer you
moron. What is your medical expertise that says that Shiavo, with over 70%
of her brain mass gone, would have recovered?

The Doctors (who do have medical expertise) didn't say he had a chance.
Now, what is your medical expertise?

Doctors *can* be wrong, you know. I remember a doctor making the
following diagnosis:
"... from my standpoint as a physician, I would be very careful
before
I would come to the floor and say this, that the facts upon
which this
case were based are inadequate. To be able to make a diagnosis
of
persistent vegetative state--which is not brain dead; it is not
coma;
it is a specific diagnosis and typically takes multiple
examinations
over a period of time because you are looking for
responsiveness--
I have looked at the video footage. Based on the footage
provided to
me, which was part of the facts of the case, she does respond."
That was Senator Bill Frist, a physician, attempting to cast doubt on
other doctors' diagnoses of Terri Schiavo's persistent vegetative
state. And you know what? He was wrong. He seemed to see Terri's
eyes following a red balloon around the room. She couldn't have seen
it - she was blind.
Terri Schiavo was not in a coma. There was nothing left of her
cerebral cortex except fluid and dead tissue. Terri was dead; her
body just didn't know it.

That's not the point. The known fact is that he did recover. The known fact
is that Terry Schiavo's recovery was an impossibility. Thus conflating the
two is dishonest, at best, on J Young's part.
Doctors had written him off.
Irrelevant and from what I can see not entirely clear from the article. The
article mentioned only "doctors' predictions that he would not live". This
is terribly inexact and hearsay to boot. My guess is that they would have
told her that it is extremely unlikely that he would come out oif the coma
and that it was extemely likely that he would die.

For someone that keeps demanding adult discussion, your constant pejorative
characterization of liberals (lie-berals) is completely at odds with this.
For the life of me, I cannot understand why conservatives (and liberals too
but much less frequently) need to reach to these depths of rhetoric.
Interestingly, there was an article in USA Today this morning about the
immigration debate and the subtitle made me think of you and this need for
you to cast liberals as liars. It said:
If the assumption is that one's opponent is lying or has ulterior motives,
we lose our ability to debate? an issue democratically

with this gentleman.
This is from the article...
"Despite doctors' predictions that he would not live..."
"Doctors also found cancer in his brain and said he would not
live." Now tell us Andrealphus...what exactly is your medical
expertise
that goes against what the doctors had predicted????
Are you really so stupid that you cannot distinquish between
recovering from a coma and continuing to live?
I asked you a question.
It was, and remains a stupid, irrelevant question from a dumbass.

we cannot be sure what the doctors said. Just imagine a doctor has
said, "he would probably die." So this is quite different. One thing
is what the lady says and other is what the doctors really said.

It's not. The only thing that is relevent is whether J Young's
characterization of the case is honest or not. Let me as you a few
questions, if I may:
* Was it the opinion of the attending physicians that, prior to her death,
Terry Schiavo was in a persistive vegetative state?
* Did brain scans prior to her death show that Terry Schiavo's brain had
atrophied more than 50%?
* Did the autopsy confirm this?
This is all a matter of public record. If you answer yes to all three of the
above, then I applaud you. You are current through 2005.
Now let's examine the other case:
* Was the Polish patient in a PVS like Schiavo?
* Did the patient in Poland have anything near the brain damage that Terry
Schiavo had?
The answer to the first is an emphatic no. The answer to the second can be
inferred by the fact that the patient is up and talking. No need for medical
creds. J Young is either a liar or willfully ignorant. QED

He makes a statement as if he is an authority. I asked him his
qualifications.
It's relevant.
It's not. The only thing that is relevent is whether J Young's
characterization of the case is honest or not. Let me as you a few
questions, if I may:
I absolutley agree that the two cases are not related; however, that's
not what I am addressing here.
* Was it the opinion of the attending physicians that, prior to her death,
Terry Schiavo was in a persistive vegetative state?
I'm not a physician and not qualified to state; however, going by what
I read by those qualified, it appears they believed she had no chance
of recovery.
* Did brain scans prior to her death show that Terry Schiavo's brain had
atrophied more than 50%?
* Did the autopsy confirm this?
From what the "experts" said, yes.
This is all a matter of public record. If you answer yes to all three of the
above, then I applaud you. You are current through 2005.
Now let's examine the other case:
* Was the Polish patient in a PVS like Schiavo?
Nope; however, doctors (those qualified) did not believe he would
live. They were wrong, which happens.
* Did the patient in Poland have anything near the brain damage that Terry
Schiavo had?
The answer to the first is an emphatic no. The answer to the second can be

I totally agree that bringing Terry's case into this is foolish and
I'm not disputing that.

Very good! For a minute there, I thought you were going to tell me that I
needed to be football player to know who won the Super Bowl.

Right. He was lucky. That's all it is. We will likely never know why he
recovered.

Very good. This was all Andrealphus was trying to say. Let's put this thread
to bed.

No, but if you were to tell me how a play was designed to work or what calls
to make...I would expect that you have some qualifications, so I could trust
your call.

I have no problem with that.

One can only imagine the pain that Terry Schiavo's parents and
other loved ones must feel when they read these type of news
accounts. http://www.kansascity.com/450/story/134507.html
Of course, unlike Terry, there was a chance for a full recovery
with this gentleman.
This is from the article...
"Despite doctors' predictions that he would not live..."
"Doctors also found cancer in his brain and said he would not
live." Now tell us Andrealphus...what exactly is your medical expertise
that goes against what the doctors had predicted????
Are you really so stupid that you cannot distinquish between
recovering from a coma and continuing to live?
I asked you a question. What is your medical expertise?
The doctors predicted he was going to die. You claimed he had a
chance for full recovery.
The Doctors (who do have medical expertise) didn't say he had a
chance. Now, what is your medical expertise?
Senseless rambling isn't going to show us what your medical
expertise is.
Perhaps if you had shown the relavance of this question, he might have
answered it
Exactly. There was no relevance between what the doctor diagnosed him of
dying from, and his recovery from the coma, not to mention the the original
poster's analogy to Terry Shiavo was completely ludicrous.
