Mohler: 80-90% of Down syndrome babies killed in push for 'human perfection' |
Now who really believes that as soon as there is a test developed that can
identify a "gay" gene, that homos won't be next on the list for extinction?
The proof is there; parents are seeking perfection. If and when that
happens, you can thank society's liberals.

Mohler: 80-90% of Down syndrome babies killed in push for 'human perfection'
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (BP)--Recent statistics show that as many as 80-90 percent
of all babies found to have Down syndrome through pre-term testing are
aborted, an alarming reality demonstrating contemporary culture's fixation
with human perfection and consumer choice, R. Albert Mohler Jr. said Jan. 22
on the "Coral Ridge Hour" television program.
The very fact that such pre-term testing is offered to expectant parents
under the guise of "making informed choices" insinuates that they really
only have only one choice to make: whether or not to abort, said Mohler,
president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky.
The Coral Ridge Hour is a syndicated weekly program featuring the teaching
and cultural analysis of D. James Kennedy, pastor of Coral Ridge
Presbyterian Church (PCA) in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
"Parents are being offered these genetic tests in order that they can 'make
the right decision,'" Mohler said. "What decision is there to make? The only
decision that is implied is a decision to abort. Once we are confronted with
a test that will identify whether an unborn baby is carrying the mark of the
Down syndrome, there is no treatment. The only choice is whether or not to
abort."
The number of abortions performed on children with Down syndrome is
especially disconcerting because of the consumerist mentality that drives
the decisions, Mohler said. Parents are now choosing life or death for their
unborn children, he said, based on the perceived "quality" of the child
developing in the womb.
"We really have entered that brave new world of medicine where all things
apparently are becoming possible," Mohler said. "Right now these parents are
having tests done on their unborn children and even in the embryonic stage
in order to determine whether these kids meet their expectations."

If it improves the overall reproductive success of the species then so
what?
On the other hand, if the risk of having a gay child is a part of overall
reproductive *success* (due to it being a natural possibility of
important embryonic sex differentiation process' in the brain for
instance) then trying to select against it by aborting 'gay' children
will in effect select against homophobes by aborting their offspring who
*might* have reproduced anyway.
So maybe there's nothing to be afraid of..
The proof is there; parents are seeking perfection.
So what? They CONTINUE to seek perfection long after their children are
born.
Shaping of children's brains and bodies goes on long after any chance of
affecting children's genetic or embryonic development has ended.
Big fucking deal.
If and
when that happens, you can thank society's liberals.
You're a fucking idiot. This has nothing to do with 'liberals' per se.
Your problem is *abortion*. Besides, your terminology is fucking stupid
as it's nation-specific.
Since Down's syndrome is a genetic defect and we cant YET treat it, the
only two options are
a) bring the defective foetus to term.
b) abort the defective foetus.
If Down's syndrome cause was bacterial, we'd test for it and fight it
using antibiotics. Infected and permanently damaged foetus' would be
aborted for exactly the same reasons.
Since most modern western demoncracies permit adults to abort unwanted
foetus' for personal or medical reasons, aborting genetically defective
foetus' is no big issue EXCEPT if you have a problem with abortion AT
ALL.
Those adults who choose to terminate a defective foetus and later have
HEALTHY children will enjoy better outcomes as a whole.
The only loser is the defective combination of genes that lost out.
If we REALLY cared about our genetics above our morals we'd be like the
Spartans and leave the defective babies out to die. But we're more
knowledgeable and more moral than the Spartans. Rather than choosing
between a child with a disability and one without, we can choose between
two embryos, one with a disability and one without.
This puts us in a better moral position than ANY of our forebears, as
long as we're not chained to some deluded and outdated spiritualistic
religious dogma.

It also costs an immeasurable amount of heartbreak to the parents. Whilst
my elder son didn't have Down's Syndrome, he was severely autistic, and
caring for him was sheer hell. Imagine having to spend an hour and a half
_every_ day for six years, scrubbing faeces off walls, windows, radiators,
mattresses, bedding, carpets etc, and see if you think life is worth living.
Even worse is the knowledge that your son is frustrated and unhappy and you
can't do a thing about it. Add to that the knowledge that you will never be
able to hold a conversation with your son and that he will always need care
24/7. The death of such a child doesn't solve your problem, because you
lose someone whom you love unconditionally. Their entire lives are a source
of regret, because you daren't have any more children in case others are the
same (although I did have one quite by accident when he was 11). I don't
think Down's Syndrome children are as difficult as this, but if parents
aren't willing to live with some of these problems, then abortion is by far
the best way out. If you'd like to read about what it's like to have a

Mohler: 80-90% of Down syndrome babies killed in push for 'human
perfection'
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (BP)--Recent statistics show that as many as 80-90
percent
of all babies found to have Down syndrome through pre-term testing are
aborted, an alarming reality demonstrating contemporary culture's
fixation
with human perfection and consumer choice, R. Albert Mohler Jr. said Jan.

on the "Coral Ridge Hour" television program.
What evil insanity. Down's syndrome isn't a matter of "perfection".
It can cost parents and society a fortune in medical care and training
to support someone with Down's.
If you'd like to read about what it's like to have a
mentally-handicapped child, see my web site, address below.
Given that YOU won't be providing the support this is obviously
another case of pro-life from conception to birth and then screw
'em after that.

I'm sure a pretty big factor in such decisions is parents' knowledge that
they won't be around forever to take care of a Down's kid, even if they
can handle all the finances.
Seriously, I do think that abortion is at best a stop-gap solution in
this case and the real solution is for society as whole, via the gubmint,
to provide that support so that parents don't have to take such factors
into account in making their decisions. Yes, that is socialistic in one
sense, but I hardly see that as a problem. The birth and raising of
special-needs kids is one of those situations where a Randian pure-
capitalist approach that expects their parents to bear the entire cost of
raising them simply doesn't work. The latter makes about as much sense
as expecting the owners of the World Trade Center to bear the entire cost
of the 9/11 cleanup and rescue efforts.

One thing I think these anti-abortion nuts failt to realise is this;
SOME parents will say, "I'll have the kid, regardless" - thus breaking

My stepdaughter has Down Syndrome, and I can back you up on this. I
would also add that DS also costs parents their sanity. At least once a
week I hear my wife screaming at her daughter for having gotten ***** on
the bathroom floor, and almost every night she has to make sure that her
***** is clean because she never wipes it properly after she's finished.
Are we talking about a baby here? No. My stepdaughter is eleven. No
friends outside family. No hanging out with anyone outside family.
Refuses to eat healthy food. Can't dress herself without assistance
(shirt and pants on backwards half the time, and shoes on the wrong feet
about 80% of the time). My mother bought her a cassette tape player
from a flea market as a Christmas gift, and for hours every day all we
hear is this eleven-year-old girl making the most obnoxious noises into
the microphone and then playing it back and laughing herself silly
because she thinks it's funny. We eventually took it away from her, but
all she did was continue making the same noises and laughing at
herself. We can't get her to stop. When she spends several nights at
my mom's or my mother-in-law's, I am in heaven because I don't have to

I sympathize with the suffering you have to endure because of your
stepdaughter's condition. That being said, most people will put
society and the people who love them through uncountable costs and
suffering in their lives. Most people rack up tens or thousands, if
not 100s of thousands of dollars in the last 6 months of their lives.
Millions of people will develop some form of dementia in their lives
making them totally dependent on others for even things like going to
the bathroom. But that doesn't mean their lives don't have worth.
It ultimately cannot be ours to decide whose life is worth living
and whose is not.

So you claim. My husband and I discussed what we would do if we found out
that I was pregnant with a Downs Syndrome baby (or some other sort of major
disability). We would not have had the child and that would have been OUR
choice to make.

Usually after having earned millions of dollars in a lifetime of
contributing to society.
But that doesn't mean their lives don't have worth.
How much are their lives worth to YOU?

Isn't that what you're doing? After all, thousands of people die of
hunger every day. You could save quite a few by giving up most of
your money and freedom.
One might conclude that you don't consider that their lives are
worth saving.

The proof is there; parents are seeking perfection. If and when that
happens, you can thank society's liberals.
Parents are seeking perfection? You mean like wanting kids who never

Not if Bush and his cohorts have their way and manage to get the
Supreme Court to overturn the abortion ruling. Just imagine RRR Bush
overturning abortions only to allow gay children being born. What a
dilemma.
