An increasing number of doctors are refusing to carry out abortions despite
a surge in demand, the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists
said yesterday.
Abortions levels have reached record levels in England and Wales, with more
than 190,000 terminations carried out every year.
Four in five are paid for by the NHS, but half of these are performed in the
private sector because of the rise in the number of anti-abortion doctors.
Staff can opt out of carrying out terminations due to a clause in the 1967
Abortion Act that says "no person shall be under any duty... to participate
in any treatment authorised by this Act to which he has a conscientious
objection".

doctors are refusing to be involved in carrying out the procedure. The
exodus of doctors prepared to perform the task is a nationwide phenomenon
that threatens to plunge the abortion service into chaos, the Royal College
of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) has warned.
