It's too bad American auto makers can't seem to make a vehicle that is half
the car of a Japanese one. While I haven't done it, I would do some looking
into seeing what the comparrasion is between total vehicles sold this year
and past years is. Then see what people are buying instead. I'm betting it's
not American.

Speaking of which...
the roomie was looking for a new car back in December.
Amongst the models he was interested in was the Honda
CR-V. This got us into a Honda dealership, and got me
checking out all the different models & sticker prices
while he was off haggling.
Anyhow, I pointed out a little red Honda Civic to
him, with A/C and an automatic, suggesting it's 29 MPG
(City) would seem like "Free gas" after three years in
a Jeep Grand Cherokee. The price? Under 13K. For the
Civic, that is.
Here we are, 11 months later, and that same Civic is
over 15K.
"Price guaging."
So you can say what you want about GM, but I hardly
think Japanese auto makers are worth any praise, not
when they're going out of their way to stick it to their
customers.

I've seen the same thing with most all car makers, you just gotta know what
you are doing when you are buying a car. I personally shop cross country. If
I save a few thousand by doing that, it is well worth it.

Yes, but this... this... profiteering wasn't at the dealer.
I mean, I looked online to check out the current price.
I knew what the cars were priced at in December because
I had visited dealships with the roomie back then. But I
didn't just run out to the dealer to check today's prices. I
went to the Honda website.
I knew they had jacked up prices after gas went through
the roof, but I had no idea how much. I was under the
impression it was in the 1K to $1,500 range. In reality
it was closer to $3,000.
The new $15,000 (plus) price is certainly over dealer
invoice, but you'll never find a Civic for what they were
selling at before Katrina.

Don't be an idiot. Since then there is a new model year and many
changes to the car. You cannot compare two different cars and and
whine that they're not the same price.

So you can say what you want about GM, but I hardly

We're talking about a $3000 increase for the Honda Civic.

Or you're whining about a fiction that you misremembered. In the past
few years the value of the dollar has dropped, Honda keeps improving
the car, and cars are always more expensive at the beginning of the
model year than at the end of the model year.

Quite the communist, aren't you?

Odd that the roomie would "misremember" the same fiction...

In the past few years the value of the dollar has dropped,

"Inflationary." That's the effect Honda's profiteering has on
the economy. Right.

Honda keeps improving the car,

That's what they'll no doubt pretend. But they are profiteering,
and there's no denying that. And, just like with the oil
companies, it's a nasty thing to do.
And it hurts *Everybody*. It's inflationary.

And you're willing to pay more taxes so that products
are subsidized by the government?

I'm willing to send every government investigative body
at companies that engage in profiteering... whether it be
big oil or big Japanese auto makers.
Seriously, dude, these people are ***** and the government
should call them on it.

It's called "capitalism".

Yeah, right. With capitalism, no company could get away
with profiteering.

As I stated elsewhere, they are.
I believe that GM -- going back years ago -- made the decision
to ride the SUV wave for as long as they could, THEN close
up shop in the states & move manufacturing to third-world
countries.
They had always planned to do so, it was only a matter of
squeezing out that last bit of profit from the capital investment
they had already made in the United States.
Who would have believed that the SUV craze would last as
long as it did? Nobody. Certainly not after 9/11. And what
about all through 2002, with the build up to war in Iraq?
You've heard of Iraq, right? The country with the second
largest proven reserves of crude oil?
At least that was true until 2004, when the Bush administration
claimed that it looked behind a tree in Canada and found more
than 170 billion barrels in additional reserves... making Canada
the nation with the second highest "Proven" reserves.(*)
Anyhow, back in 2002, the U.S. started the build up towards
an invasion of the country with the second highest proven
reserves, and the lowest per-barrel production cost. At the
very least, the Iraq invasion was going to remove some
2 million barrels EACH DAY from the world's oil market.
You can't do that without sending shivers through the spine
of the auto industry.
(*) Costs more than $30 per barrel just to get it out of the ground,
as opposed to the <$2 per barrel for Iraqi oil.
