The Pentagon's Defense Intelligence Agency since 2002 has run an
intelligence-gathering and support unit that has authority to operate
clandestinely anywhere in the world where it is ordered to go in
support of anti-terrorism and counter-terrorism missions, a senior
defense official said Sunday.
The US is beginning to look a lot like former USSR.

I saw that report yesterday, about 15 minutes after it was posted to the
Guardian site. About 2 minutes afterward, I found this:

I said to myself "now THAT was a fast denial!" :-)

Yeah, but what are they denying? That there's no unit " as is
described" in the Post? Sure. The Post got some minor detail wrong.
There is a unit, and it is under control of Rumsfeld, and it is clandestine,
but maybe it's just not so secret.

They definitely used their semantic prowess to make it a valid denial.
"There is no unit that is directly reportable to the Secretary of
Defense..."
Ok, DoD... so who do they report to?
