"Morning-after" pill delays |
"Morning-after" pill delays
Here's a study I haven't seen that seems important to get out there. Much
of the carping by conservatives over infamous the Plan B "morning-after"
pill—which still has yet to be approved for over-the-counter sale by the
FDA—has focused on the assumption that the pill would make women more
likely to engage in "icky" sexual activity. Now we can argue whether or not
you think this is a reasonable argument—I certainly don't—but what would be
nice to have are facts.
And now it looks like we do. According to researchers at the University of
California, in a study done earlier this year, increased access to the pill
does not affect sexual behavior. What the pill does do, of course, is help
reduce the risk of unwanted pregnancies. More to the point, the pill helps
reduce the number of abortions—which in theory should be exactly what
conservatives would like to see. So file that alongside all the other
mountains of evidence indicating that the pill is perfectly safe and
effective for women.
Unfazed by the scientific method, however, the Bush administration is
delaying yet again an FDA confirmation vote on approving the pill. So now
the Senate is getting into the matter, as Hillary Clinton and Patty Murray
have promised to hold up the nomination of Lester Crawford to FDA
commissioner spot until the controversy gets resolved. And hopefully it
does soon. By the by, Chris Mooney wrote a piece for Mother Jones about the
holdup, and the controversy, surrounding the pill a few months back that's
worth a read.

I think the real answer to this one is money...the current abortion
providers would not want women having access to Plan-B because that would
prevent them from becoming pregnant and therefore needing an abortion (which
means paying a good bit of money to the abortion provider and probably
suffering the negative emotional effects of unwanted pregnancy) to get
themselves out of a bad situation.
How ridiculous!...well, that's money speaking the mother tongue. Money
talks, it talks too much in my opinion, more so than it has any right to ;-)
My view is that women should have access to both abortion *and* Plan-B.
There is nothing like having real choices especially ones that can make
lives so much easier and reduce the unpleasantries, after all we *are* a
civilised world, are we not? Why should a woman pay for her sexuality? Why
should she have to require the possibly painful and potentially traumatic
invasive surgery of abortion when she could just as easily take a pill or
tablet and prevent the pregnancy before it becomes a problem?

I doubt that the hold up on the "Morning After" pill is caused by
abortion providers, who, under threat of possible murder by religious
zealots like Eric Rudolf, are increasingly on the decline in raw
numbers.
As with everything else related to the current republican leadership,
the far right-wing is driving the social agenda of the Bush
administration. Look at the spasatic knee-jerk reaction over the Terry
Schiavo fiasco. What an embarrassingly slavish response by conservative
politicians!

Try reading the Constitution, particularly the 1st, 4th, 9th and 14th
Amendments.
Human rights are absolute. You can't decide that, say, blacks should be
denied equal rights just because the majority think it shuld be so.
If there were a tyranny of the majority, Brown v Board of Education could
have been overturned by popular vote in the 1950s.
That is why the "popular vote" anti-gay legislation in various states in
unconstitutional. These "laws" deny equal rights to a class of people (i.e.
gays), while the US Constitution guarantees equal rights for ALL. This is
why an anti-gay amendment to the Constitution, as Darth Dubya wants, would
signal the end of American freedom.
America is supposed to mean FREEDOM. FREEDOM. LIBERTY. EQUAL RIGHTS FOR ALL.
If abortion is outlawed, a FUNDAMENTAL HUMAN RIGHT would be denied. And that
would be a tragedy for American freedom.

Because it has been taken over by right-wing Republican nuts who HATE
the
idea of freedom and love the ideas of waging war and lording it over
other
peoples.
You ought to get over the invasion of Haiti; that was over ten years
ago.

let's hope this shows up the next time people have an opportunity
to
vote, assuming they're allowed to and that their votes are
counted.
Do you mean like when the people got to vote on Roe V Wade in 1973?
Human rights are not subject to vote.
W(ho)TF are you?
Someone who reads the newsgroups you clutter, obviously.
Are you a U.S. Citizen or are you butting your head into something you
do
NOT have a say in?
*****, Wentzky.
You can't handle it?
You post to a public newsgroup, and anyone can respond to
your insane blather.
Swallow your own words and realize what they mean.
If you don't like it, find something else to occupy your
time than convincing people that you really are insane.
Read your penultimate(up unto this point) statement.
Every right and wrong in a democratic society is SUBJECT to vote
Without proper representation , such things as wars ensue.
...which has nothing to do with his observation that human rights
aren't
subject to vote.
How is it that human rights are not subject to vote?
Try reading the Constitution, particularly the 1st, 4th, 9th and 14th
Amendments.
Human rights are absolute. You can't decide that, say, blacks should be
denied equal rights just because the majority think it shuld be so.
If there were a tyranny of the majority, Brown v Board of Education could
have been overturned by popular vote in the 1950s.
That is why the "popular vote" anti-gay legislation in various states in
unconstitutional. These "laws" deny equal rights to a class of people
(i.e.
gays), while the US Constitution guarantees equal rights for ALL. This is
why an anti-gay amendment to the Constitution, as Darth Dubya wants, would
signal the end of American freedom.
America is supposed to mean FREEDOM. FREEDOM. LIBERTY. EQUAL RIGHTS FOR
ALL.
If abortion is outlawed, a FUNDAMENTAL HUMAN RIGHT would be denied. And
that
would be a tragedy for American freedom.
Johnny blithered;
Why is America hated in so many places in the world now?
Why is it that we have lost face on the world scale?
The nation that authorizes abortion of its own citizens' children without
qualification is the nation that is to be hated.
Lefty replied;
Then why don't as many people hate Canada? It has no abortion law at
all, even for third trimester abortions. They are all perfectly legal.
Why don't as many people the Netherlands? They allow abortion on
demand at any stage of pregnancy, unlike the US. Yet the Netherlands
also boasts the lowest per capita abortion rate in the world.
You are an idiot, Johnny. That much is clear.

you would consider worse. Your theory is happy horseshit, Johnny, and
you know it.
The US is hated because of its imperialistic and abusive foreign
policy, not because of abortion. You need to face this.

Certainly a country that has killed more than forty million of its own
infants since 1973 is going to have a big credibility problem when it
comes to telling the rest of the world how to behave and helping them
achieve "freedom".
When the US resolves that internal humanitarian crisis, only /then/ can
it be said to have any moral authority in the world. Whilst I broadly
support the US's courageous stance on global political issues (with a
few exceptions), it seems a bit hypocritical in the light of what they
permit to happen to their own unborn children.

Do you have any idea how many abortions have been carried out in the US
since Roe v. Wade?
Yes. Over 40 million abortions have taken place.
But you said something completely different and unrelated above: you claimed
that more than 40 million *infants* have been *killed* since Roe v. Wade.
Where is your evidence for this absurd claim?
Indeed, I have never heard of a case when an infant was killed during an
abortion. After all, infants neither request abortions nor perform them. But
I have heard cases when women died bue to a botched attempts at illegal
abortions pre Roe v. Wade.

Because the US government and big business are power-hungry meglomaniacs
that ruthlessly trample on the human rights of anyone other themselves,
whether inside or outside the US.
Certainly a country that has killed more than forty million of its own
infants since 1973 is going to have a big credibility problem when it
comes to telling the rest of the world how to behave and helping them
achieve "freedom".

Yes, roughly - the rate of abortions were about the same following as
prior to that particular decision - they just became legal rather than
remaining illegal... and not a single one killed an infant, so the
figure is irrelevant to the issue. As usual you are trying to bring into
a topic that has nothing to do with abortion your lies about abortion.

Two lies in the same sentence. All in a day's work for psycho Pat.

What lies? The only lies I see are the ones constantly spewing from the
twisted minds of the freedom-hating anti-choicers.

Since I live in this country and you don't, I believe Pat's quite a bit closer
to the reality than you will ever let yourself be.
