Object: Moscow's First Gay Pride Parade Disrupted by Police and Hecklers
This was an illegal demonstration, that was defiantly staged with the sole
purpose of provoking a violent response. This was an affront to the mores
and values of Russian society and should not have been so belligerently
staged; especially when permits were already rejected by the city and upheld
by the courts. The gay community owes Muscovites an apology.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/05/27/AR2006052701002_pf.html
MOSCOW, May 27 -- Riot police broke up an attempt by gays and lesbians to
stage Moscow's first gay pride parade Saturday. Gay activists who attempted
to lay flowers near the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier outside the Kremlin wall
and then assemble across from city hall were heckled and assaulted by
skinheads, Orthodox Christians and radical nationalists.
Police said they had arrested about 120 people, both supporters and
opponents of the parade. Gay activists were dragged away by riot police when
they began speaking to reporters, but opponents of the parade, including a
nationalist member of parliament, were allowed to speak and chant, "Moscow
is not Sodom."
Several international activists and politicians traveled to Moscow in a show
of support for Moscow's gays and lesbians. Volker Beck, a member of the
German Parliament from the Green Party, marched with the group and was
struck in the face by skinheads outside city hall. He was briefly detained
after the incident. A Canadian journalist was also assaulted by opponents of
the parade, who threw smoke bombs and eggs before police moved in to
disperse them.
"Lesbians and gays have to cope with major problems in Russia," Beck said at
a news conference earlier in the day. "There is a massive threat of
violence, and it is also frightening that there is no clear support from the
state for the rights of lesbian and gay citizens. On the contrary, the mayor
of Moscow deprives people who advocate tolerance and equal rights of the
freedom to demonstrate."
The city had banned the parade on the grounds that it was anathema to the
values of most residents and therefore presented a threat of violence. A
city court upheld the ban Friday.

J. Young lies again - this was obviously a case of police repression
in a country that is really just starting to put in democratic
institutions. The "gay community" in Russia was obviously trying to
do one thing and one thing only - have the sort of parade that many
other countries have and where nobody bats an eyelash.
BTW, if J. YOung wants an end to gay pride parades, there is a simple
way to do it - eliminate descrimination and prejudice, and the parades
will become superfluous.

Well, maybe. The Saint Patrick's Day Parade in NYC started as protest

If the gay pride parades keep going after descrimination ends like the
parade you just described, J. Young and his ilk will have only
themselves to blame for it. :-)
I'm not sure that the situation is comparable - I guess it is a
question of how many distractions you have for being gay versus being
Irish. We'll find out eventually, if we live long enough. :-)

Bill Taylor (aka Bitchin' Bonney, aka ...) is making a fool of himself
again. However, he now has backtracked since his "49 year average
life span" was previously the approximate value he gave for all gays
and now it is only for those who are HIV+ (including, no doubt, people
who died before effective drugs were available).
The dude is slipping up, contradicting himself from one post to the next.

There are two separate things being said here (and tied together quite
sneakily if I do say so myself):
1) The average lifespan of a homosexual with AIDS is 49.
That shows no difference between the life expectancy of a homosexual
with AIDS or a heterosexual with AIDS. And I'm _pretty_ sure AIDS
itself doesn't really care where its host's genitals are going; there
is no reason to believe anything as trivial as sexual orientation would
affect the way AIDS affects an individual--but nice try at singling out
the portion of AIDS sufferers who happen to be homosexual.
2) Homosexuals represent a vast majority of AIDS cases in the USA.
Source?

It's not really a protest march in SF anymore. I remember about ten
years ago we suddenly had corporate sponsers. Anheuser-Busch was the
biggest. I heard much wailing and gnashing of teeth about "selling
out" and "big corporations." I wanted to grab people and scream "you
idiots, we've won! We're no longer godless perverts, we're a
marketable demographic!"

By "distractions" I meant things like dance clubs or other venues
where people could have a good time. I'd agree about being a
"marketable demographic". That's why Ford told the wingnuts to shove
it once they tallied up the gay market versus a right-wing Christian
boycott.
It may not really be a protest, but don't they have groups promoting
same-sex marriage and other political issues in it?

It's not really a protest march in SF anymore.

<LOL> What the heck do you guys have to protest in San Francisco
anyway?

We're San Franciscans! We *always* have something to protest about!

But does anyone care? I sure don't.

I remember about ten

years ago we suddenly had corporate sponsers. Anheuser-Busch was the
biggest. I heard much wailing and gnashing of teeth about "selling
out" and "big corporations." I wanted to grab people and scream "you
idiots, we've won! We're no longer godless perverts, we're a
marketable demographic!"

You can be the target of extra strength prophylactics ads.

Trojan actually was a sponser a few years ago.

they know something...

Yes, that we tend to buy a lot of condoms. That the GLBT community
invented the concept of safe sex.

....and you guys are also pretty significant in spreading the very
reason that the term "safe sex" was ever coined. Thank you very much
for that one.

Are you going to thank the IV drug users and Haitian imigrants as
well? They were the other main vectors in the US.
As for "you guys", I'm not one of them. In fact, I'm pretty asexual
these days. But even in my prime I was pretty much straight. (Antonio
Bandaras being a prime exception.. drool...)
And shall we discuss the heterosexual plague, herpes? 15 to 20
percent of the heterosexual adult population has the Herpes Simplex II
virus, and up to 75% have been exposed to Herpes I. Thanks to the
hets screwing like mink in the seventies. That's not even going into
the explosion in "traditional" STDs during the same period.
Had Patient Zero been a straight man, we'd probably have a cure
already.

Oh yeah, much thanks to all the spreaders of aids..

You act like it was intentional. For the first few years of the
pandemic, no one even knew how the disease was spread, or what was
causing it. It wasn't until HIV was identified that things began to
get clear.

Herpes doesn't often kill people...

No, it just leaves them blind, shortens life spans, and can cause
birth defects.

Had Patient Zero been a straight man, we'd probably have a cure

Oh gawd, spare me your whines about being such a victim.

Ever hear of Legionnaire's Disease? Struck a bunch of white men.
Compare the early funding on that disease to the early funding for
GRID/AIDS.

Um, I know about the birth defects, but gotta disagree with you on the first
two. I've never heard of such a thing and have two friends with Herpes.

You're reating yourself. These days AIDs doesn't kill that quickly. I
know people who have been living with AIDS for close to twenty years.

Ever hear of Legionnaire's Disease? Struck a bunch of white men.

I didn't say that. I was comparing the response to two outbreaks of an
unkonwn, fatal disease. One hit a community that was largely shunned
and considered tainted. It was pretty much ignored until it spread to
the general population. The other hit a group of respected members of
the majority. It became a national priority overnight.
Here's a quiz: Name the drug that holds the record for the fastest
approval for human use in FDA history.
