Just on the subject of Bergen-Belsen, a single camp, take a look at the
effect it had on Mervyn Peake, artist, poet, writer, who visited the
camp shortly after its liberation. Peake, as anyone who knows his work
is aware, had not a political bone in his body. Nor was he Jewish. He
had no axe to grind. Yet what he witnessed in that place damaged him
emotionally for the rest of his life!
In his diary he describes how British soldiers had counted the bodies.
35,000 in all, 10,000 lying unburied, the others in open pits.
The camp had contained 30,000 living skeletons when liberated on 15th
April: 1,500 Jewish survivors from Auschwitz; a thousand Germans sent
there for anti-nazi activities; several hundred Gypsies; 160 Luxemburg
civilians who'd been active against the German occupation; 120 Dutch
anti-fascists; as well as Yugoslavs, Frenchmen, Belgians, Czechs,
Greeks and, most numerous of all, Russians and Poles - a veritable
kaleidoscope of Hitler's victims!
Peake saw this place as a stain on the soul of not just Germany, but
all humanity!
His wife, Maeve, blamed herself for her husband's trauma - it had
been at her instigation that Mervyn had gone as a war artist. The
experienced impacted on the man and his work profoundly. Which in turn
had a devastating emotional impact on his family.
Even the actress Dame Sybil Thorndike, visiting the camp a month after
its liberation, cried all the way back to Hamburg in the bus. What she
had seen was beyond comprehension.
Today, so long after those dreadful events, we see a grainy black and
white photograph of naked corpses, and think it shocking (if we have
any humanity at all, that is?). But these photographs do not convey the
smell and cloying taste of death in these terrible places, nor the
agony of the victims, nor the sheer, hopeless inhumanity of a regime
that actively condoned and organised such unspeakable degradation and
murder, not only of its own citizens, but of the citizens of other
states also.
And, finally, these photographs can't let you feel the suffering of
the people who were literally dying before Mervyn Peake's eyes.
To talk about "MERCY KILLINGS!!!!!!!!!" is the ultimate insult not
only to the millions, who died, but also their families and friends,
and all those individuals who suffered under an inhuman and murderous
regime. Let alone the British, American, Russian and other allied
servicemen who were confronted with this glimpse of hell on earth, and
in some cases, like Peake, experienced terrible personal trauma
themselves as a result of what they witnessed.
I suggest in future you whisper your hateful and absurd messages to
your left elbow. It may well agree with you.

I made no mention in my post of "mass gassings"? I was unaware of
any gas chambers in the camp, but perhaps you know something I don't?

numbers of individuals who originated from a wide range of countries,
and with various religious and ethnic backgrounds.
Interestingly, you make mention of a "typhus epidemic" - was this
epidemic European wide? Did it just affect Eastern Europe, perhaps? Or
did it only affect the camps, where undernourished human beings were
crowded together like cattle in conditions that can only be described
as appalling and which were certainly unsanitary.
As I'm sure we are all aware, typhus is also known as "Jail
Fever" or "Camp Fever" and occurs in filthy, overcrowded
conditions where the body louse is able to spread the disease. It is an
easy illness to prevent - providing you wish to prevent it!
How many of the camp's staff were infected by the disease, do you
think? How many died?
Answers on a postcard, please.
The camp had originally been designed to accommodate 10,000 people.
Ultimately it contained over 60,000 people most of whom had no food or
shelter.
If you lock people away like this, deliberately overcrowding them in
the process, starving them, overworking them and denying them the most
basic sanitation - thus assisting the spread of disease, then the
inevitable deaths that follow are murder! "Not mercy killing" as
claimed in the original post in this thread.
After the liberation of this fetid hellhole, this terrible symbol of
man's inhumanity to man, an average of three hundred inmates died
each day during the ensuing week from typhus and starvation. Despite
the arrival of vast quantities of British medical aid, personnel and
food, the death rate was still around sixty a day after more than two
weeks. Slowly but surely, as a sanitary measure, the huts were burned
with flame-throwers, the last being burned on 21st May.
Finally, words do not exist to describe the utter and abject misery of
the inmates of this camp, the French, Belgians, Dutch, Germans,
Yugoslavs, Czechs, Greeks, Russians, Poles, Gypsies and Jews. What they
experienced is unforgivable and must never be forgotten.

Undernourishment was indeed an important factor in the
spread of disease. The starvation of the inmates was
intentional, and it was decided upon long before the end
of the war:
"That we sentence 1.2 million Jews to die of hunger should be
noted only marginally" -- Hans Frank, the Governor-General of the
"Generalgouvernement" (part of Nazi-occupied Poland), speaking about
the Jews under his jurisdiction, on 24 August 1942. Source: "Nazi
Conspiracy and Aggression", Vol. IV, page 900.

Well you must not be a very thorough researcher as Typhus was running
rampant all over Europe at the time, and for those in prison and work
camps, the typhus epidemics were nearly always fatal to those already
sick and/or suffering from malnutrition due to lack of food. The lack

lines and bridges designed to disrupt Nazi war production, which also

emaciated state of the bodies and it is clear that many died simply of
starvation and not of some concerted effort to kill them. Even the

Once more a statement made as if absolutely immune from doubt. What
source do you have for typhus killing more people than any other cause
in the camps, was my original question? It seems the product of some
malin g=E9nie without foundation in fact?
In an earlier post in this thread I acknowledged the existence of
Typhus in the camps - that was never in question. What I then went on
to ask for: "your views on the fact that death by typhus, or
malnutrition, or overwork was unknown amongst the British and American
prisoners in POW camps..." etc.
I didn't claim typhus was unknown to the POW camps - I stated I
know of no registered deaths due to this cause amongst British and
American prisoners. Same with overwork and malnutrition. I also made it
quite clear my statement concerned prisoners in POW camps.
I'm not trying to suggest, by the way, that life was all roses for
POW's either.
Now, I note the interesting link you posted, thanks for that, but here
we read the following with regard to Stalag Luft 1V:
"The food was lousy but it did exist and the Red Cross parcels that
arrived with some regularity contained enough additional nourishment to
keep most of the men fairly healthy. Soap was abundant."
Then we read:
"The prisoners...were not made to work."
And:
"Life in the camp was at least tolerable."
All of which supports my statement. The problems for these poor guys
began when they had to relocate during one of the coldest winters of
the war in Germany. In other words, they were no longer inmates of a
POW camp. In fact it is even stated via your link how much better off
these men had been in the camp! (you'll note too, no doubt, they had
food, regular Red Cross parcels and medical supplies despite the
terrible allied bombing raids you mention?)
You'll note also the statement "nearly every POW became infected
with lice" that's became infected, not already were infected, on
the march - to get typhus, you need those lice.
For a general comparison on conditions between POW camps and
Concentration Camps, you could read John Castle's biography of
Charles Coward. Coward was captured early in the war and spent much
time in captivity. He organised escapes and acts of minor sabotage in
Stalag V111 - B, for example. Eventually, trouble maker that he was,
he ended up in Auschwitz 111 (Monowitz), the labour camp run by
I=2EG.Farben which contained 10,000 Jewish slave labourers and various
other prisoners from across Europe. The conditions there, Coward
stated, were beyond human comprehension; the POW camps had been bad,
but nothing to compare to this! People died here through disease,
beatings, exhaustion, malnutrition and executions on a daily basis.
On the general subject of typhus, the Waffen SS had the division for
typhus and virus research located in Buchenwald where doctors and
technicians used the inmates to test the effects of infections and
vaccines - the unit was set up in 1941.
Interestingly, the first successful anti-typhus vaccine was developed
by Rudolf Weight and went in to mass production well before the Second
World War. Weight worked with the Germans during the war on production
of his vaccine. As later stated, it would have been a simple procedure
to vaccinate against this disease - providing the political will was
present. It wasn't.
As an aside, the British Army had been vaccinating its troops since
1942 against typhus.

You mean, rounding up people, expelling them from their homes, herding
them into ghettos, and then concentration camp, working them to death
and starving them, or shooting them into ditches, was "natural death?"
You mean when my grandmother was shot in the ghetto, and when my
mother's first four year old son was shot hiding in the forest, that
was a "natural death?' I hope you and all those who think like you get
such "natural" endings as well.

Are you sure you are telling us the truth. The 6 million Jews you claim were
all killed or did some of them die of a natural death. What about the 1.5
million German ethnics that disappear while enrout to Germany. How did the
dye or the million of Germans who were killed in bomb attack was this a
natural death ?.

them into ghettos, and then concentration camp, working them to death
and starving them, or shooting them into ditches, was "natural death?"
You mean when my grandmother was shot in the ghetto, and when my
mother's first four year old son was shot hiding in the forest, that

You know much nonsense is spouted about nutrition, or rather levels of
nutrition in Germany during Hitler's glorious thousand year Reich!
(as an aside, isn't it just as well it lasted only twelve years,

People tend to forget Germany was subject to mild rationing before the
outbreak of war in September 1939, this because of Goring's
substitute of guns for butter - coupons were required for meat,
potatoes, bread or flour, milk, tea or ersatz coffee, sugar and jam,
eggs, oil and fat, soap and coal.
By May 41 the normal weekly ration consisted of 5 =BC pounds of bread, 1
pound of meat and =BD pound of fat - this compared with a British
ration of 4oz of butter, 4oz Bacon or Ham, 12oz sugar, 2oz tea and meat
(when available) to the value of 1 shilling and ten pence (about a
pound in weight), 1 fresh egg, 3 pints of milk. Dried egg was also
available, 1 packet every 4-weeks. Briton also rationed clothing and
coal ( in march 1942 gas and electricity were also rationed).
Certainly rations in Germany steadily decreased (after a fairly
substantial increase shortly after the invasion of Russia), until 1945
when it provided around 1000 calories per day per person.
The situation would have been much worse with an earlier deterioration
had it not been for extensive German "requisitioning" of foodstuffs
within the occupied territories - which in turn caused tremendous
hardship for the populations of those territories.
Over a four-year period, the Germans took 220,000,000 eggs, 2,845,000
tons of wheat and a similar amount of oats, 848,000 tons of meat and
710,000 tons of potatoes from France alone!!
Hence why, at war's end, we have all those photographs of hungry
Parisians picking over hotel dustbins for food during the winter of
45/46. Undernourishment was widespread in France (having been bled
white to feed the Germans) as it was in many other countries liberated
from Nazi domination, and for the same reasons.
Sticking with France a minute, the economy had been shattered by the
extortions of the occupiers.
Europe as an entity was bankrupt.
Germany, at the end of 1945, had only 40% of the food it needed - but
I have to confess, the term "sowing the wind and reaping the
whirlwind" does come to mind! - although the full effect of this
wouldn't be felt until 1946 and 47. 2=BE million dwellings had been
completely destroyed, 1=BC million badly damaged. Hamburg had lost 53%
of its homes, Cologne 70%, Dortmund 66%, Munich 33%, Magdeburg 50%,
Dresden 60%, Berlin 37%.
All this is beyond dispute. That there were outbreaks of typhus is
beyond dispute. That this became a massive European wide problem is
rubbish. That it killed more people in the camps than any other cause
is rubbish.
People in the camps suffered malnutrition due to the shortage of food
and supplies - really?
I would suggest this were more a case of "policy" local or regional
especially through 1943 into 44.
Take a look at the rations for a German civilian in mid 44:
"2,425 grammes of bread, 150 of cereals, 3,500 of potatoes, 225 of
sugar, 175 of honey or jam, 250 of meat, 185 of fats, no liquid milk
only skim milk, 60 grammes of cheese, half an egg (you'd save your
stamp to get a whole one each fortnight) and 60 grammes of coffee."
And a British civilian for the same period:
"Unrestricted bread and potatoes, 225 grammes of sugar, 115 of jam or
honey, 1shilling & 2d worth of meat (approx 160 grammes), 225 grammes
of fat, 1.185 of liquid milk, 85 of cheese, slightly more than half an
egg, and 55 grammes of coffee."
As another aside, rationing lasted in Briton 14-years, finishing
finally in 1954!
However, you can see that the basic diet for an average German citizen
wasn't a hell of a lot different from the average British citizen -
in fact it could be argued the German had the edge.
Oh, you may say, but this deteriorated greatly 44 in to 45! Damn right
it did! And maybe if the bomb had been ready a bit earlier Berlin would
have glowed in the bloody dark!!
Anyhow, none of this explains why malnutrition was a major feature in
the camps 43 in to 44 other than as integral part of genocide.
Which in turn brings me to the damp morning of April 4th, at Ohrdruf,
just on the outskirts of the town, a smallish do nothing kind of place,
where Americans under George Patton uncovered for the very first time a
concentration camp. Though small, it stank of death. It was a place of
horror. And when Patton walked about that damn hell pit, he became
violently and repeatedly sick. Walker, the Corps Commander, forced the
rather rotund Burgermeister and his very plump wife to tour the
instillation. Afterwards, when the mayor and his wife returned home
from this visit, they both committed suicide.
Sad that.
As for good old George upchucking in front of his staff, well, he
wasn't the only one. It's the smell, see. That's what gets to you
- there's only one smell like it and you can never get used to it,
never blot it out, it seeps in to your clothing, into your soul. You
wake up in the morning with it in your mouth. Years later, and for no
reason at all, you taste it again. It'll never go. It's the smell
from all those corpses, some so rotten they bloat and turn black and
the skin peels, others so emaciated you don't think they have any
organs to go rotten - but they stink the worse!

Bergen - Belzen Camp. here is what he said. The situation was horrible death
bodies all over the place and typhus was rampant and the water was
contaminated. But he also said the situation there was not worse the what he
has see in the German cities. In Nuremberg on January 5 1945 some 35-45
thousand civilians were killed in allied bombing and buried in mass graves.
Have you or anyone else seen this pictures or are they intentionally
withheld because of promoting the holocaust.

Just on the subject of Bergen-Belsen, a single camp, take a look at the
effect it had on Mervyn Peake, artist, poet, writer, who visited the
camp shortly after its liberation. Peake, as anyone who knows his work
is aware, had not a political bone in his body. Nor was he Jewish. He
had no axe to grind. Yet what he witnessed in that place damaged him
emotionally for the rest of his life!
In his diary he describes how British soldiers had counted the bodies.
35,000 in all, 10,000 lying unburied, the others in open pits.
The camp had contained 30,000 living skeletons when liberated on 15th
April: 1,500 Jewish survivors from Auschwitz; a thousand Germans sent
there for anti-nazi activities; several hundred Gypsies; 160 Luxemburg
civilians who'd been active against the German occupation; 120 Dutch
anti-fascists; as well as Yugoslavs, Frenchmen, Belgians, Czechs,
Greeks and, most numerous of all, Russians and Poles - a veritable
kaleidoscope of Hitler's victims!
Peake saw this place as a stain on the soul of not just Germany, but
all humanity!
His wife, Maeve, blamed herself for her husband's trauma - it had
been at her instigation that Mervyn had gone as a war artist. The
experienced impacted on the man and his work profoundly. Which in turn
had a devastating emotional impact on his family.
Even the actress Dame Sybil Thorndike, visiting the camp a month after
its liberation, cried all the way back to Hamburg in the bus. What she
had seen was beyond comprehension.
Today, so long after those dreadful events, we see a grainy black and
white photograph of naked corpses, and think it shocking (if we have
any humanity at all, that is?). But these photographs do not convey the
smell and cloying taste of death in these terrible places, nor the
agony of the victims, nor the sheer, hopeless inhumanity of a regime
that actively condoned and organised such unspeakable degradation and
murder, not only of its own citizens, but of the citizens of other
states also.
And, finally, these photographs can't let you feel the suffering of
the people who were literally dying before Mervyn Peake's eyes.
To talk about "MERCY KILLINGS!!!!!!!!!" is the ultimate insult not
only to the millions, who died, but also their families and friends,
and all those individuals who suffered under an inhuman and murderous
regime. Let alone the British, American, Russian and other allied
servicemen who were confronted with this glimpse of hell on earth, and
in some cases, like Peake, experienced terrible personal trauma
themselves as a result of what they witnessed.
I suggest in future you whisper your hateful and absurd messages to
your left elbow. It may well agree with you.

room there were about 200 women, from 15 to 30 years old, lying on the

clothes at all. They were all huddled together one next to the other.
In many cases one blanket covered three people. The floor was covered
in faeces and soaked in urine, and the people lying on the floor were
in just the same state - they all had extremely severe diarrhoea and
were to weak to move.
"Next to each person, on the floor, was a tin can or old mug and
small piece of bread which they were carefully hoarding. When they felt
like it they took a bite out of it, regardless of what it had been
lying in. Their hair, hands, faces, and feet were all covered in a
mixture of dry faeces and dirt. At least three-quarters of them had

I believe what William Barton a British red gross officer arriving at the
Bergen - Belzen Camp. has personally seen. I grew up as a kid and have seen
the destruction of the German cities. The trek of the refugees from the east
European countries. From 6.5 million expellees 1.5 million of them did
disappear before the reached Germany And it also seems the holocaust seems
to have priority over all other events. We se very little of the facts the
refugees and Germans did suffer. Today doing some comparison some of the
suffering of this people would be considered a holocaust denial by the
holocaust industries. For more then 60 years the German people or call it
tax payers do pay extortion money the ever hungry holocaust industries. And
if no one speaks out this con game will continue for generation to come.
