You know, just when I think you hit rock bottom...you surprise me and go

Now naturally you are making fun and jokes about a serious career because it
is something I do.
The men and women who work in corrections put their lives on the line every
day they walk past that gate.
A correctional officer doesn't know from one day to the next if he or she is
coming home in one piece or alive.
Read the history of Attica
Correctional Officers play a serious role. #1, Correctional Officers help
keep the public safe. You don't want those doors to open and allow them
back out do you?
#2, Correctional Officers play a vital role in the rehabilitation of an
inmate. You realize the inmate sees and interacts with a Correctional
officer more than anyone else in the prison? It is vital that a
Correctional Officer be professional, act professional, know the laws, and
most important constitutional rights an inmate is entitled too.
#3, Do you have any idea of the 4 functions of a prison?
a) Incarceration
b) Retribution
c) Deterrence
d) Rehabilitation
#4, do you have any idea of the role of a Correctional Officer?
a) Security
b) Manager of offenders
c) Team member
d) Most important, a positive role model for the inmate
#5, Correctional Officers wear many hats.
Law Enforcement, we do almost the same things troopers do...except we are in
a different setting. From enforcement to preparing cases
Mentor
Counselor
Advisor
Sometimes just an ear to listen
Protector, yes it is our job to protect them as well as staff and the public
Sometimes fireman or EMT..yes we are trained in both
The bottom line is Flower Power, you don't know squat about the job at all.
You are totally disrespecting millions of men and women who do a job that
most can not do or wouldn't last a week doing. It takes a very special
person that can do the job. Now you can say what you want about me, I don't
care...that bounces off. But when you go and mock a job that I take
seriously, you are putting those men and women down. I offered you once to
go into a forum with other Correctional Officers and say your stuff to not
just me...but hundreds of others who get together in this forum and discuss
the job.
You didn't take me up on that offer. That tells me a few things, mainly
that you are a coward. If you want to disrepect Correctional Officers, lets
see you go into a forum that is nothing but Correctional Officers and see
you get an education on just what we do.
It is a shame when people like you mock and degrade such a honorable,
important, dangerous and high stress job...such as Corrections.
But then again, you chose to be like this.

That's the advanced class for after they have been on the job for six
months. No need to waste that training money on people who won't stay

training. I work with at least a couple of people who have PhDs.
Still, nothing wrong with being a prison guard. Different jobs for
different people.

I work with people who have Masters, I work with people who only have a H.S.
Diploma
I have seen people with GED's have more common sense than a person with a
Masters.
A degree means little in some careers. Especially Corrections. You can
have a degree, that is great..but in corrections it is experience that gets
you to advancement. I know plenty of Correctional Officers with Associates
and B.A. degrees. It means absolutely nothing in Corrections. The paper is
worthless.
Actually let me rephrase that a bit, personally I think the education is
valuable. I learned so much with knowing and learning the Constitutional
Rights a inmate has, and knowing that saves my butt from getting sued. You
don't know just how easy it is to get sued for something as simple as not
getting a inmate a roll of toilet paper when he/she ask for one. Even
though we know what many of the inmates use Toilet Paper for..and it isn't
for wiping their (*$(*....we still must make sure they have this basic need.
If not...guess what...you just violated the 8th ammendment and you will find
yourself in court. Little things like that...nice to know.
I have seen an officer sued for just that very thing.
Overall though...
It takes experience. It takes knowing how to deal in emergency situations.
Knowing how to solve the problem, and the only way to learn is to experience
it. Trial and error.
It takes 5 years for the average Correctional Officer to become seasoned.
Meaning, it takes 5 years for that officer to actually have a handle on the
job.
That is 5 years of OJT, making mistakes, trial and error...you will never
have a seasoned officer without this 5 year period. Some it takes longer.
Most important quality a Correctional Officer can have, and I find that you
will find this quality in most of your military retirees, or people who did
serve in the military...is leadership.
A person who can think quickly on his/her feet. A person who can sense when
they are being manipulated. Over all the job is almost like a game..hate to
use that word..but at this time it is the most appropriate. They have 24/7
to figure out how to mess up your day...you have 8..maybe 16 hours to be one
step ahead of them.
Still, nothing wrong with being a prison guard. Different jobs for
different people.
No, there is absolutely nothing wrong with corrections. It is a GREAT job,
with many different rewards. I do not see me doing Corrections for the next
25 years, I do know I will advance. Which is why I am taking the
opportunity now to get as much education as possible, with plans on
advancement later.
I don't know if I will want to go on to administrative in Corrections or
move on to something else in the state.
Getting back to what I was saying....
Working in Corrections takes a special person. The average person doesn't
last long.
Right now in Delaware we are fighting our legislators to address a serious
problem we are having in Corrections.
We are losing people. We have more than 120 positions open. The state
keeps spending money on opening up more bed space, but we don't have the
officers to fill the positions. You like to talk about waste right? Well
believe me there is plenty of it in this state.
Do you know how much it cost to train the average c/o? Approximately
$5,000. It takes a while for the state to get back its investment, and yet
we have officers leaving the job with in their first month.
There are several reasons. Main reason is Maryland and N.J., pay as much as
10k more per year, with 20 year retirement and better benefits.
California had this problem, and Gov. Davis increased their pay by 30%, thus
solving a crisis he had with his DOC.
Our state has this idea that lowering the age limit to 19 and bypassing many
things..such as extended background checks...fills the positions.
Think about this...a 19 year old working in a cell block with hardened
criminals who are masters of manipulation. How long do you think it takes
before that officer is no good?
Again, it goes back to maturity and common sense. Something most people do
not really have until they are in their mid twenties and have been around a
bit.
So the college degree means nothing in this field. Oh, don't get me wrong,
I think it should. Especially for positions higher than Sgt. I wish our
state would make it a requirement that promotion to Lt. requires a min. of
an associates in Criminal Justice.
It would be nice because you will know important things like Constitutional
Rights.
Experience though is always going to make or break a good officer, at least
in this field.
By the way,reading some of your post...I think your job is very important as
well..takes a great deal of knowledge, and is a necessity.

Not that there is a problem with that. But in your profession, I would
think you at least need a BS in Computer science. Osprey is at the
Associates level and I doubt he's acheiving that much, given his
wilful ignorance.
