These are the people that so-called pro-women advocates like Ray Fischer
hold in such high esteem.

A Muslim cleric's claim that women who do not wear the veil are like
'uncovered meat' who attract sexual predators sparked outrage around
Australia yesterday.
Sheik Taj Din al-Hilali, the nation's most senior Muslim cleric, compared
immodestly-dressed women who do not wear the Islamic headdress with meat
that is left uncovered in the street and is then eaten by cats.

It just goes to show there are nutters in the Moslem religion the same as
there are nutters in the Christian religion.
That of course does not mean that all Moslems or all Christians are nutters.
On TV there were numerous high ranking Moslems saying that the Sheik was
wrong, as well as many lay Moslems.

No, actually, muslim theocrats are even worse that the xian ones. Old
IBen only wishes that he could impose theocracy in this country like
muslims already have in theirs. Contrary to ludicrous theocon claim, us
liberal atheists or "secular progressives" as O'Reilly insist upon
calling us, have never been friends of muslim religious fanatics. Muslim
fundies and xian fundies have quite a bit in common, unlike their atheist
counterparts. The problem in the muslim world is hyper-conservatism,
religion-based misogyny and lack of separation of church and state.
That's the same recipe for disaster that repugs in the US are constantly
touting.

It's a small consolation though ;). Anyway, I'm just trying to raise
consciousness, as Dawkins would put it, about the fact that what's wrong
with the Muslim world is too much conservatism, too much religiosity, too
much traditionalism including patriarchy and obedience to authority. The
theocons in the US try to tell us that things would be better if we
allowed them to take us down the same dead-end road that muslims have
already travelled, only they want to substitute fanatic xianity, as
opposed to fanatical islam. The results will be no better as our faith-
based, half-trillion dollar, boondoggle of a crusade in Iraq has already
demonstrated. People need to wake up and realize that the september 11,
madrid and 7/07 london subway attacks were all faith-based initiatives,
as was Bush's holy war against Iraq and his father's wars in iraq and
somalia.

OK, but that's not what I'm doing. I'm basically saying two things.
First of all (1) everyone who participates in the god delusion, however
moderate, end up abetting the fanatics. In fact one finds that very
problem with a lot of democrats today. Contrary to reichwing propaganda,
most democrats are not atheists, but christians. As a consequence, they
end up not being able to effectively combat fundamentalist theocons,
because these democrats still basically buy into a lot of the religious
nonsense that the fanatics are selling. (2) Fanatics are the squeaky
wheels who get attemption. They also often have the determination to
seize power from the moderates and force their views onto society. If we
are not careful, these fanatics will bring about the apocalypse that they
believe their holy book describes via man-made acts of violence. My beef
is with the fanatics. They are the ones who need to be taken down. But
one effective way to do that is for more moderates to secularize and stop
lending support to the fanatics. I only wish that every democrat was an
atheist because that would mean that almost half of the country was
atheistic. Sadly, the US is a long way from that.
