Brothers and sisters,
My 24 year old daughter told me she believes in Global Warming today.
I don't. She asked if I was stupid, 'hadn't I been reading the
newspapers?' I called her an idiot that she shouldn't believe
everything she reads or hears in the media. She explained that all her
friends scattered across the continent can definitely spot the effects
of Global Warming. 'It's like when 12 inches of snow falls in the city
and then it melts in a week." I called her an idiot and she called me
an idiot. We stopped shouting at each other. She paid the bill for the
meal and then left. That was at noon today. We haven't spoken since.

Around the end of the fist century predictions of the end of the world
were common. There has not been a shortage since. There was the Club
Of Rome prediction of the early '70s that by this time we would all be
breathing sulfuric acid. There was the Love Canal catastrophe which
led to the creations of still another federal agency. Now Global
Warming and sea level rise.

By your own account you became abusive and then she retaliated. You
can't blame Al Gore for that.
Why, if you are indeed convinced that Al Gore is wrong but set some
value by your family life, you didn't approach the matter more
sensitively. After all, surely, in the long run, the truth, as you see
it, will out. If you'd said something like "Well I suppose we'll just
have to agree to disagree on this one ... let's make it a project of
ours to compare notes at regular intervals" perhaps the dinner would
have ended better for both of you.
You could have left with an opening to pitch what you thought relevant
to her and she might have believed likewise. It's not as if either of
you being wrong was going to result in disaster -- and perhaps it
would have led to more insight.
It strikes many of us who believe that AGW is a persuasive hypothesis
that the denier side are often a little crazy and defensive -- perhaps
because you feel marginalised by your beliefs. It would be better not
to play to that stereotype and instead to remain calm.
As I've remarked a number of times, one doesn't even have to accept
the AGW hypothesis to justify what is proposed for action under its
rubric. Much of it is simple good sense, and if you took this approach
then the difference in practice between you and your daughter would be
minimised and probably not worth the argument. You'd be in practice,
on the same page, just not in theory.
Trying to cast Al Gore as the villain of this little imbroglio does
you no credit.

B.T.W. A reverse polarity sun-spot was recorded(Jan 2, 2008) in Sun's
northern hemisphere. That event signals then the end of Sol's
minimum activity period, (also solar irradiance), and the beginning of
a new sun-spot/irradiance cycle.
