What makes you say that? Have you any evidence that abstinance
programmes does reduce the rate of STD infection? Those 60% are the ones
who are correct.
Real evidence shows that there is very little difference between those
who take part in these programmes and those who don't. The biggest
effort to lower STD infections is good education, including "Here is a
condom, this is what you do with it".

Is this the only thing you ever think of, J Young? Sex? And other
people's sex life?
The sexual education in the USA is a disaster and I'm surprised a
taliban like you opposes REAL education and real policies to decrease
the astronomical rate of teen pregnancies.
Of course, abstinence is the safest way. But, in the real world,
teaching "abstinence" is the most idiotic thing to do. How do you
explain the low rate of abortion in such liberal countries like the
Netherlands, Denmark and Scandinavia compared to the one in the US?

Thats NOT the situation - it is abstinance or NOTHING.
I support BOTH methods, and that is how it is being taught in NZ - wait
till you're in a relationship, don't feel pressured into having sex,
you can say no if you're uncomfortable and if you choose to have sex -
use a condom; thats the offcial line by the NZ health department.
If the conservatives wish to reduce the rate of abortion - how about
adequately funding sex educaiton programmes, and actually teach ideas
that a REALISTIC rather than being idealistic ***** derived from
religous dogma.

And the NZ rate of teenage pregancy is pretty high. Maybe a bit lower than
the US - they don't have the same sort of big city underclass - but still
high.
Boys know that if they don't establish that a relationship is sexual pretty
early on, it will never be sexual. So they push for intercourse at the first
or second opportunity. It is unrealistic to expect a relationship to start,
and then become sexual when the girl is comfortable - girls don't think that
way.
Girls know that seeming eager for sex is about the only surefire way of
making sure that the boy loses interest. So they are always threatening to
terminate the relationship, leave, be interested in someone else. Then the
boy pushes them, and they consent to sex. That's how things tend to work.
You can say "no" if you're uncomfortable. That bit of the advice is true.
Unfortunately most young people have mixed emotions. And don't expect saying
"no" to be cost free.
"If you choose to have sex". wink wink. This is the whole problem. "Do you
want to go to a mixed college, Jonny, or do you not think you are mature
enough for that yet?".
"use a condom". Young people know instinctively that condoms are degenerate.
Anyway, it's terrible advice. People who have a long series of sexual
encounters with different partners then find it hard to establish permanent
relationships. A baby is not a bad choice - why not get your babies in at
seventeen rather than doing an accountancy degree at university and then
professional exams and then finding you have to juggle childcare and career
at thirty?

"Don't have sex unless you want a baby" is perfectly realistic and even
teenagers can see the sense of it.

And J Youngs lack of reality - it isn't a dual approach that the US is
taking, its 'Abstinence or nothing approach' - and mark my words, its
already happening - people without safe sex educaiton coming into
clinics with stds relating to anal and oral sex - and all we'll have is
the Republicans blaming the individuals for the lack of education,
which was the result of their abstinence programme in the first place!

Of course abstinince works, the point is that TEACHING abstinince
doesn't work. When you have a poll taker asking questions kids are
going to say one thing. When a guy and a girl are in a parked car at
night with no one else around, all that common sense is going to go
flying out the window.
One of the things that christian fundementalists are blinded from by
thier rose-colored fantasyland is that teenagers are great big gooey
blobs of raging hormones. You think a sense of responsibility is going
to survive in the face of a billion years worth (I don't give a crap
HOW old you believe the world is) of species survival instinct? Priests
who have had years of training can't even keep it in thier pants. Maybe
a few of the kids can do it, but I for one would rather they know how
to use a condom.
In EVERY SINGLE CASE, kids who have had REAL sex education that
included contraception, there has been far fewer teen pregnancies than
with kids who have have just been told not to have sex. The parents can
have any opinion they want, it doesn't make them right. Real-world
evidence trumps unsupported opinions every time

Oh, I don't think that's correct. I am sure that the vast majority,
teaching abstinence doesn't have any or little effect; however, I am
sure that a few do listen and will practice. I don't think it's fair
to say that it doesn't work. It may, even if it is just a few who
listen.
When you have a poll taker asking questions kids are

Depends.
It depends on a lot of things, their background, how they were raised,
their own personal values and morals. There are girls out there that
still say no, and believe it or not, some boys who do believe in
waiting for marriage. The percentages of these kids might be low.
One of the things that christian fundementalists are blinded from by
thier rose-colored fantasyland is that teenagers are great big gooey
blobs of raging hormones.
Wait a minute, weren't you the one who just said "When a guy and a girl
are in a parked car at night with no one else around, all that common
sense is going to go flying out the window"?
That would implicate that their hormones have just taken over all
common sense.
And that's good, there is nothing wrong with teaching kids that they
should use birth control methods, such as condoms. Not only to prevent
pregnancy but to also prevent the spread of STD's.
That still doesn't mean we shouldn't teach abstinence as in conjunction
with teaching safe birth control methods.
In EVERY SINGLE CASE, kids who have had REAL sex education that
included contraception, there has been far fewer teen pregnancies than
with kids who have have just been told not to have sex.
Imagine what the statistics would show to those kids who are taught
both.
The parents can
have any opinion they want, it doesn't make them right. Real-world
evidence trumps unsupported opinions every time.
Depends on who's version of the "real-world" you are talking about.
Your's or everyone elses?

New Poll: Teens, Young Adults Support Abstinence, Say It's Effective
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- A new poll about abstinence finds the
practice has strong support from the people who matter most -- teenagers
and
young adults. They support abstinence and say that it's effective in
reducing unplanned pregnancies and lowers AIDS rates.
A new Harris Poll reveals 56 percent of those 18 to 24 and 60 percent of
people 25 to 29 think abstinence programs reduce the rates of HIV and
AIDS.
Meanwhile, 49 percent of 18 to 24 year-olds and 60 percent of 25 to 29
year-olds say abstinence education programs are effective in reducing the
number of unwanted pregnancies.
According to a Washington Times story, younger age categories were the
most
likely of six age groups to find abstinence education effective, and they
should know.
"The most striking, and surely the most important differences among
various
demographic groups are the differences between younger and older adults,"
the poll indicated. "Adults under the age of 30 are more likely to believe
that abstinence programs are effective, and it is of course these adults
who
are the main targets for the programs."
In fact the percentage support for abstinence education lowered with every
increase in age category, with just 37 percent of those 65 or older
supporting such programs.
The Harris Poll also found sharp partisan divisions on abstinence with
Republicans more supportive and Democrats more likely to oppose such
programs.
Some 50 percent of Republicans found abstinence education programs to be
effective against AIDS and 46 percent said they were successful in
reducing
unplanned pregnancies. Among Democrats the numbers were 39 and 28 percent.
Other polls have found much stronger support for abstinence education.
An August 2005 survey conducted by the Pew Research Center for The People
&
The Press found 76 percent of those polled favored teaching abstinence
education in schools while just 20 percent opposed.
A January 2004 Zogby International poll shows parents overwhelmingly
support
abstinence education for teenagers.
Out of the 1,004 parents surveyed across the nation, 96 percent said
abstinence is best for teens. Only 39.9 percent thought that abstinence
and
contraception should be combined in a single class.
The Harris Poll was conducted from December 8 to 14 and surveyed 1,961
adults.
Of course abstinince works, the point is that TEACHING abstinince
doesn't work.
Oh, I don't think that's correct.
Studies be damned.
I am sure that the vast majority,
teaching abstinence doesn't have any or little effect; however, I am
sure that a few do listen and will practice. I don't think it's fair
to say that it doesn't work. It may, even if it is just a few who
listen.
Typical Osprey - waste taxpayer money on programs he acknowledges are
of little value. Of course, that is how he got his job.
When you have a poll taker asking questions kids are
going to say one thing. When a guy and a girl are in a parked car at
night with no one else around, all that common sense is going to go
flying out the window.
Depends.
It depends on a lot of things, their background, how they were raised,
their own personal values and morals. There are girls out there that
still say no, and believe it or not, some boys who do believe in
waiting for marriage. The percentages of these kids might be low.
Osprey may be speaking from experience on this. These girls are saying
no to him.
One of the things that christian fundementalists are blinded from by
thier rose-colored fantasyland is that teenagers are great big gooey
blobs of raging hormones.
Wait a minute, weren't you the one who just said "When a guy and a girl

So you agree with him. Do you just like to talk?
You think a sense of responsibility is going
to survive in the face of a billion years worth (I don't give a crap
HOW old you believe the world is) of species survival instinct? Priests

Then explain your "unplanned" children!
In EVERY SINGLE CASE, kids who have had REAL sex education that
included contraception, there has been far fewer teen pregnancies than
with kids who have have just been told not to have sex.
Imagine what the statistics would show to those kids who are taught
both.
Studies show MORE pregnancies.
The parents can
have any opinion they want, it doesn't make them right. Real-world
evidence trumps unsupported opinions every time.
Depends on who's version of the "real-world" you are talking about.
Your's or everyone elses?
The real world of a guard with "unplanned" children and with a wife
who, as you claim, "hired a hit man to kill her child?"

No mention of the actual questions asked, the breakdown of responses, the margin
of error, the methodology. For all anyone knows, the poll was conducted by
having pastors ask kids in church. In short, the poll is a fraud.

Isn't it a shame that real facts prove them wrong?
Yes, it is, isn't it?

Battle Creek, Michigan stop teaching abstinence only because of the
skyrocketing teenage pregnancy after they adopted the program a few
years ago.
Surprisingly animal husbandry does not work on humans. Go figure.

Then they found out all that and five bucks will get them a small
latte at Starbucks...which is where most of them will end up working (and in
their spare time do the anal and oral thing, and tell everyone they are
abstaining).
