Object: Novena seeks to promote healing in wake of abuse crisis
In the eyes of some, the RCC can do no right. but decent, compassionate
people do recognize the church's willingness to accept responsibility for
past transgressions while attempting to begin the healing process. Cardinal
O'Malley is the right man for this job.

BOSTON, Mass. - Cardinal Sean P. O'Malley is inviting Boston Catholics to
join him in a novena and "pilgrimage of repentance and hope" that will take
him to parishes throughout the Boston Archdiocese that have experienced "an
especially painful history" of sexual abuse of minors by clergy.
The novena to the Holy Spirit is designed to promote healing and renewal of
the archdiocese in the wake of the clergy abuse crisis, which burgeoned into
a national scandal following a January 2002 expose in Boston of decades of
clergy sexual abuse of minors.
"Publicly acknowledging the church's faults and failures is an important
element of asking forgiveness of those who have been harmed by the church,"
said Cardinal O'Malley in a statement announcing the parish visits.
"The sexual abuse crisis has caused intense suffering for survivors and
their families and has been a source of shame and sorrow for our entire
church community," he added. "Our hope is that these services will bring
together survivors, their families and friends, as well as clergy,
parishioners and members of the broader community."
He invited all in the archdiocese "to join us as we call upon the Holy
Spirit to assist us as we work to bind up the wounds of abuse and restore
the faith of our community.

Wrong crime to confess to, wrong person to atone for the crime. The
collective crime of the RCC, which Pope Benny is uniquely to blame for,
was covering up the events and the shell game they played with the
offenders. It is the responsibility of the offenders to confront their
victims personally and explain to them whether they understand that
what they did was wrong, why they do not (and I am almost certain they
do not) if they do not, and why they now do in the unlikely event that
they do.
What O'malley is doing is a further crime in and of itself, as it is
obscuring the moral issues and denying any prospect of closure to
victims who have been permanently damaged. It is a crime for O'malley
to be doing anything at all as it is no longer his or the RCCs business
to be dealing with it.
All of this sick charade is further evidence that moral relativity is
the inevitable result of religious belief. That's how I know that the
offenders have no genuine remorse for what they have done, any more
than devout Catholic Myra Hindley ever experienced any genuine remorse
for murdering those children.

So if they pray for nine days, that's going to make everything all
right? I wonder how the victims feel about that.

• As I see it, the one true church is not past the altar-boy scandal
until it realizes that paedophilia is a disorder that can only be cured by
permanent incarceration or by summary decapitation. For starters, the
church needs to revert to optional celibacy -- i. e., the way it was for
over half of the church;s history. Also, the church needs to stop
teaching priest-candidates that sex with a woman is more sinful than sex
with a child, and that children simply outgrow the experience of having
sex with adult.

you continue to demonstrate your ignorance of usenet newsgroups,
scumball, and your disrespect for readers' ability to decide for
themselves what is and is not appropriate.
do you feel like a hypocrite criticizing others for doing what you
do? even osprey has legitimately commented on your hypocrisy.
your hypocrisy aside, what you might want to do to make yourself feel
like an even bigger ***** is take a random sample of posts you've
whined about and then search google for the number of posts with this
topic, demonstrating that readers know what is of interest to them
far better than you do

What's so funny about peace, love and <youngopinions@aol.com> posting
the following on Tue, 16 May 2006 01:27:20 -0400 iin alt.atheism?

"Past transgressions"? Is that how you describe decades, if not
centuries, of covering up the rape of innocent children by priests?
The RCC seems to be ready to admit errors.. once they get caught. Look
at the whole mother-baby scandel in Ireland. Went on for years, until
the story was blown and *now* the Church admits that imprisoning unwed
mothers, making them work as slaves, and stealing their children for
sale to the highest bidder might not have been the best idea.
