Breaking: Speaker Hastert Under Investigation By the FBI Over Abramoff
Ties »
ABC News reports:
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dennis Hastert, is under
investigation by the FBI, which is seeking to determine his role in an
ongoing public corruption probe into members of Congress, ABC News has
learned from high level official sources.
Federal officials say the information implicating Hastert was
developed from convicted lobbyists who are now cooperating with the
government.
Part of the investigation involves a letter Hastert wrote three years
ago, urging the Secretary of the Interior to block a casino on an
Indian reservation that would have competed with other tribes.
ABC indicates that the investigation of Hastert is an extension of the
ongoing Abramoff probe. Some details on Hastert’s ties to the criminal
lobbyist:
CONTRIBUTIONS — HASTERT RECEIVED $100,000 FROM ABRAMOFF AND HIS
CLIENTS: “Hastert ultimately collected more than $100,000 in donations
from Abramoff’s firm and tribal clients between 2001 and 2004.” In
Jan. 2006, Hastert pledged to give approximately $70,000 of the
donations to charity. [AP, 11/17/05; CNN, 1/3/06] expand post »
COUSHATTA CAMPAIGN — DELAY ORGANIZED HASTERT, BLUNT, AND CANTOR TO
BACK ABRAMOFF EFFORT: One of Abramoff’s tribal clients, the
Coushattas, “opposed a plan by the Jena Band of Choctaw Indians to
open a casino at a non-reservation site, expected at the time to be
outside Shreveport, La., not far from a casino owned by the
Coushattas.” Abramoff lobbied DeLay’s office to organize a June 10,
2003 letter to Interior Secretary Gale A. Norton endorsing a view of
gambling law benefiting the Coushattas. The letter was eventually
co-signed by DeLay, House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-IL), Majority
Whip Roy Blunt (R-MO) and Deputy Whip Eric I. Cantor (R-VA), a “group
of people, who do not normally weigh in on Indian issues.” [Washington
Post, 9/28/04]
COUSHATTA CAMPAIGN — HASTERT HELD FUNDRAISER AT ABRAMOFF RESTAURANT,
SUPPORTED COUSHATTA LETTER: “House Speaker Dennis Hastert, an Illinois
Republican, held a fundraiser at Abramoff’s Signatures restaurant in
Washington on June 3, 2003, that collected at least $21,500 for his
Keep Our Majority political action committee from the lobbyist’s firm
and tribal clients. Seven days later, Hastert wrote Norton urging her
to reject the Jena tribe of Choctaw Indians’ request for a new
casino.” [AP, 11/17/05] « collapse post

Feds Say House Speaker Not Under Probe
"The Justice Department denied a news report Wednesday that it was
investigating House Speaker Dennis Hastert.
The statement by department spokeswoman Tasia Scolinos came in response
to a report by ABC News that Hastert was under investigation by the FBI
to determine his role in a public corruption probe centered around
convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff. "

them Republicans.

ABC News Update on Hastert Story
May 24, 2006
Brian Ross Reports:
Richard Esposito and Rhonda Schwartz contributed to this report.
Despite a flat denial from the Department of Justice, federal law
enforcement sources tonight said ABC News accurately reported that
Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert is "in the mix" in the FBI
investigation of corruption in Congress.
Speaker Hastert said tonight the story was "absolutely untrue" and has
demanded ABC News retract its story.
Law enforcement sources told ABC News that convicted lobbyist Jack
Abramoff has provided information to the FBI about Hastert and a
number of other members of Congress that have broadened the scope of
the investigation.
Sources would not divulge details of the Abramoff’s information.
"You guys wrote the story very carefully but they are not reading it
very carefully," a senior official said.
One focus involves a letter Hastert wrote in 2003 urging the Secretary
of the Interior to block an Indian casino that would have competed
with tribes represented by Abramoff.
The letter was written within days of a fund-raiser held for Hastert
at Abramoff’s restaurant in Washington.
Federal campaign records show more than $26,000 was raised at the time
from Abramoff and his clients.
Hastert has denied doing anything unlawful and says he has a long
history of opposing certain types of Indian casinos.
ABC’s law enforcement sources said the Justice Department denial was
meant only to deny that Hastert was a formal "target" or "subject" of
the investigation.
"Whether they like it or not, members of Congress, including Hastert,
are under investigation," one federal official said tonight.

The independent counsel was set up so there could be investigations
with out the FBI doing this. The independent counsel is not co-equal
with any of the branches, nor does it serve (i.e., work for them) and
is independent of them all.
The Speaker is correct on this. The FBI works for and reports to
Alberto Gonzales, Attorney General.
I find it fishing that moments later ABC reports he is under
investigation also. I think it was message to Speaker Haskert to shut
up or you will go down. Maybe the gunfire was also a message.

Just as the weapons-grade anthrax in the mail to two key

The news media, since most media companies are now controlled by a
handful of corporations whose sole interest is in maintaining a high
profit margin, you are getting mostly fluff instead of hard news. Hard
news is labor-intensive. It is cheaper to go with the fluff.

Of course it's true...
Note the careful wording and the semantic difference between "under" as in
"under investigation" and "being" as in "being investigated" .
ABC never claimed that the fat idiot was "under" or "being" investigated
just that the investigation was covering the letter he wrote to the
committee about the casino licences...
His reaction to that other crook Jefferson's office being searched is very
interesting ... rotfl...
Besides the fact is, as a repug, he's corrupt by definition.
We all know this... so stop being silly...
