NRLC's flawed endorsement |
I read the material at
http://www.nrlc.org
related to the National Right to Life Committee's endorsement of Fred
Thompson, and it appears that a major component of their endorsement
was Thompson's perceived "ability to win." States the 13 November
2007 NRLC press release, "In making its endorsement, National Right to
Life considered the position of candidates on the life issues, their
records on the life issues and their ability to win."
Reminder to NRLC: there hasn't been *one* primary election yet,
Thompson hasn't won a single primary.
Also, he entered the contest late and hence is the least-tested
individual on the presidential campaign trail.
This perceived "ability to win" probably was based on a 7 October 2007
poll: see the Republican stances PDF linked to from
http://www.nrlc.org
Surely NRLC could have done better than to make an endorsement
apparently based in large part on a 7 October poll.
Tell me, NRLC: is Thompson a pro-life warrior?
What pro-life laws, if any, would a President Fred Thompson push for
passage of?
Are you in favor of, or opposed to, criminalizing family physicians'
performing cranial depression abortions?
What's Thompson's stance on that matter?

A Values Voter Debate was held on 17 September 2007 among Republican
candidates running for President. McCain, Thompson, Romney, and
Giuliani declined to participate-- maybe they thought they could do
without support from 'values voters.'

Bobby Schindler: My name is Bobby Schindler. I'm

the world watched-- because she was disabled and
unable to speak for herself. My question is would
you pursue or support legislation that would protect
the cognitively disabled from being dehydrated to
death by having their food and water taken away?
Ron Paul voted NO, the rest of the candidates voted
YES.
Ron Paul's response: No. He was the only Republican at that debate
who gave a 'no' response to Bobby Schindler's question.
So how do you feel about George W. Bush and his "Texas Futile Care Law"?

Nonexistent.
Houston Mother Loses Fight To Keep Baby On Life Support
HOUSTON -- A critically ill baby at the center of a lengthy
court battle died Tuesday shortly after being removed from
life support at a Houston hosptal.
A judge in Houston on Monday lifted an injunction the mother
had won that prevented doctors from halting the care they
believed was futile.
Wanda Hudson unsuccessfully fought to continue the medical
care for her 5-month-old son, Sun. The boy was diagnosed with
a fatal genetic disorder that left him with a tiny chest and
lungs that were too small to support life.
Hudson said her son just needed time to grow and to be weaned
off of the ventilator he was on since birth. She described the
final moments of her baby's life.
"He opened his eyes while he was in my arms, before they took
him off the ventilator. He smiled. He moved his tongue, actually
his whole body. And I feel like they took him off too soon," she
told KPRC-TV in Houston. Hudson said she wants an autopsy to
determine if her baby really had a fatal genetic disorder.
"This is murder. I am not sugar coating. It's murder," Hudson said.
"I cried, and it wasn't because that they were moving him off the
ventilator ... they are trying to tear down my trust in the sun
above."

Here's a chore for you:
1. Read the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
2. Copy and paste a section - any section - of it here.
3. Explain what it actually does.
4. Explain why you think what it does will improve the US.
Then you'll get my answer.

We
hope that you will join us in careful deliberation of
Gov. Huckabee's candidacy
http://www.chuckbaldwinlive.com/c2007/cbarchive_20071102.html
According to an opinion piece written by John Fund in the Wall Street
Journal, "Paul Pressler, a former Texas judge who led the conservative
Southern Baptist revolt, told me, 'I know of no conservative he [Huckabee]
appointed while he headed the Arkansas Baptist Convention.'"
Fund went on to say that "Mr. Huckabee's reluctance to surround himself
with conservatives was evident as governor, when he kept many agency heads
appointed by Bill Clinton."
Fund also said this about Huckabee: "'He's just like Bill Clinton in that
he practices management by news cycle,' a former top Huckabee aide told me.
'As with Clinton there was no long-term planning, just putting out fires on
a daily basis. One thing I'll guarantee is that won't lead to competent
conservative governance.'"
Mike Huckabee is also terrible on immigration. According to Jim Boulet,
Jr., executive director of English First, "Rudy Giuliani spent years
defending the right of New York City to remain a sanctuary for illegal
aliens. Yet Giuliani was a veritable Lou Dobbs Jr. on illegal immigration
in comparison to Mike Huckabee."
Regarding Huckabee's stance on immigration, Mr. Minton said, "Until of
late, he has been an open-borders guy on immigration--amnesty, the whole
works. As governor, he wanted to give free college scholarships to all
illegals."
