NY Times: CBS Mislead on Documents |
On September 20, 2004, the NY Times posted an article by Jim
Rutenberg titled: "CBS News Concludes It Was Misled on National
Guard Memos, Network Officials Say." Go to:
http://www.nytimes.com/2004/09/20/politics/campaign/20guard.html?ei=5006&en=42f1be2f0a0efa9d&ex=1096344000&partner=ALTAVISTA1&pagewanted=print&position=

Excerpts:
"After days of expressing confidence about the documents
used in a "60 Minutes'' report that raised new questions
about President Bush's National Guard service, CBS News
officials have grave doubts about the authenticity of
the material, network officials said last night.
"The officials, who asked not to be identified, said CBS
News would most likely make an announcement as early as
today that it had been deceived about the documents'
origins. CBS News has already begun intensive reporting
on where they came from, and people at the network said
it was now possible that officials would open an internal
inquiry into how it moved forward with the report. Officials
say they are now beginning to believe the report was too
flawed to have gone on the air.
[...]
"Ms. Will is one of two documents experts consulted by the
network who said they raised doubts about the material
before the segment was broadcast. Another expert, Marcel B.
Matley, said in interviews that he had vouched only for
Colonel Killian's signatures on the records and not the
authenticity of the records themselves. Mr. Matley said
he could not rule out that the signatures had been cut
and pasted from official records pertaining to Colonel
Killian.
[...]
"'The editorial story line was still intact, and still is,
to this day,' he said, 'and the reporting that was done
in it was by a person who has turned in decades of flaw-
less reporting with no challenge to her credibility.'

Papa Jack comments:
They still don't get it at CBS. When a news organization
uses phony documents to substantate a story, they shouldn't
expect folks to have any confidence in the report.
The other "substantiation" of this story was the former
Texas House Speaker Ben Barnes. However, Amy Barnes, his
daughter called the Mark Davis Show; when asked whether
her father was lying, she stated on the air:
"Yes, I do. I absolutely do. And I think he's doing
he's doing it for purely political, opportunistic
reasons – trying to get John Kerry elected and trying
to make Bush look like the bad person. ... Like I
said, he's going to be trying to promote his book
that he's got coming out."

Obviously, Dan Rather's eagerness to hurt President Bush
got the better of his judgement in this whole matter.

Now, this is *ironic*. When a president uses phony documents to
substantiate his leadership, he shouldn't expect folks to have
confidence in his leadership.
Is that right, PJ?

"Our enemies are innovative and resourceful,
and so are we. They never stop thinking about
new ways to harm our country and our people,
and neither do we."

And _still_ Bush skipped out on his duty. The distraction of
the memos doesn't alter that.

I should have added a caveat explaining there will always
be "useful idiots" like Ray who will go down with the ship
regardless of the facts.
Ray, as Dan Rather admitted, a number of professional
investigative reporters have been trying to PROVE that
very thing for 5 years -- and they finally resorted to
fraud to try to "get" Bush. Doesn't that tell you anything?

The bottom line is that CBS screwed up. The Kerry campaign tried to sneak
something in to destroy Bush, and it blew up in their faces. Unfortunatley
due to the dirty politics and tricks the Kerry Campaign tried to pull, it
may very well bring down Dan Rather and hurt CBS for a very long time.

Rather apologized for his mistakes.
Bush refuses to apologize for his mistakes.

Notice that Jackass provides no evidence to contradict my
statement.

It tells me that you're lying again. The Gloce and the Associated
Press found that Bush was did NOT complete his service.
But useful idiots like yourself still support a president who
is responsible for killing thousands of innocent people, for
damaging the US economy, for taking money from the middle class and
giving it to the rich.
