Thankyou. I can't fathom how a woman who just lost her son, and who's
mother has one foot in the grave, can find all this time to travel,
have meetings, collect money, and attend rallies. Maybe she should
spend a few days at home and grieve with some quiet dignity.

Especially since her son signed up voluntarily. He was not drafted
and was hired and trained to do exactly what he was killed in the
process of doing. It was part of the agreement that he would go where
he was told to go and do what he was told to do. There are detailed
and exact procedures in the Uniform Code of Military Justice which
provides for anyone who feels he is given an unlawful order. These
procedures are told to every recruit as a vital and necessary part of
their basic training.

And after he died it became clear it was all for a package of lies.
She has every right to be pissed.

that believes you can do these things. Among them
are [a] few other Texas oil millionaires, and an
occasional politician or business man from other
areas. Their number is negligible and they are stupid."

Not quite. Members of the military are required to NOT obey orders
which are unlawful. "I was just following orders" is not a reason.
Now, as for Sheehan herself - d'you think that it's possible that her
activities are therapeutic? Perhaps this is the best way she could
honestly find to deal with the fallacies that led to her son's death?

I think that's probably what it is.
I got into this discussion with a good friend of mine a few weeks ago. Now,
if you think I am hard core conservative...you haven't seen anything. This
guy makes me look liberal.
We got into the discussion about Sheehan and he was bashing her. I was
actually defending her.
I told him, that just because a parent's child volunteered to go into the
service doesn't mean that the parents have lost the right to question the
reason their son or daughter may have died. I know that if that was my
child, I would certainly want to know.
So I asked him, "What are they dying for"?
His answer was, "To defend our country"
I said, "Defend our country from who"?
He said, "From what ever"
I'm serious, that was what he said. You see, many people, including myself,
are questioning what our kids are dying for. I am sure that a parent
doesn't want to hear, "Ma'am, thank you for your son's service. You will be
happy to know that he died for what ever".
Cindy may be grieving, we don't know. None of us are her. She has the
right to speak out; however, she must still follow the law.
I feel for any parent that has a child.
A lot of people don't realize, it isn't just the men and women who are
fighting making the sacrifice. The wives, husbands, mothers, and fathers
are making a sacrifice as well.

True. And there is a prompt investigation of every case. But a
position of national policy does not involve an unlawful order.
Ordering the military to attack another country is lawful. Ordering
it to kill civilians on sight is generally unlawful. But not always.

Er, attacking another country CAN be unlawful. I don't know how many
soldiers would refuse, but the order to go to war can, in and of
itself, be an unlawful one (unless said country pulls out of the
treaties, etc., that make the order unlawful, of course).

Now, as for Sheehan herself - d'you think that it's possible that her

Irrelevant. Therapy is done in private and not on national news.

I would say that the national news media itself bears the
responsibility for the attention all this has gotten, as much as
anyone else does. You can make all the fuss you like, it still takes a
news director to put it on screen.

Perhaps this is the best way she could

Guess we'll never know for sure, but I suspect that she has a better
idea about that than we do.

Are you always this devoid of compassion? Jesus.

I simply observe facts. The only reason the military exists is to do
exactly what they are doing and to do it at the orders of their
superiors, who answer to the governing civilian authorities.

Not quite. Members of the military are required to NOT obey orders
which are unlawful. "I was just following orders" is not a reason.

True. And there is a prompt investigation of every case. But a
position of national policy does not involve an unlawful order.
Ordering the military to attack another country is lawful. Ordering
it to kill civilians on sight is generally unlawful. But not always.

Er, attacking another country CAN be unlawful.

Not as far as the attacking country is concerned.

I don't know how many
soldiers would refuse, but the order to go to war can, in and of
itself, be an unlawful one (unless said country pulls out of the
treaties, etc., that make the order unlawful, of course).

That depends on the country involved. In the US the President can
issue the orders. Congress must be involved at some point but under
the War Powers Act the President can make the decision and give the
order. And it is automatically legal.

Now, as for Sheehan herself - d'you think that it's possible that her
activities are therapeutic?

Irrelevant. Therapy is done in private and not on national news.

I would say that the national news media itself bears the
responsibility for the attention all this has gotten, as much as
anyone else does. You can make all the fuss you like, it still takes a
news director to put it on screen.

Which is one reason journalism is considered an unsavory profession.

Perhaps this is the best way she could
honestly find to deal with the fallacies that led to her son's death?

That is her problem and not to be projected on the national scene. I
wonder if her son would agree with what she is doing?

Guess we'll never know for sure, but I suspect that she has a better
idea about that than we do.

Frankly I could not care less what kind of idea she has about
anything. And no one can know for sure what another person would
think.

That is a different issue and should be addressed outside of any

I seem to have missed the part where it is a requirement that anyone
must join the armed forces, not to mention the part where if the do
voluntarily sign up to be a member and take the pay and benefits they
have the right to refuse to do what they were hired, trained, and paid
to do.
If they don't like the job they have the right to quit at the end of
every enlistment period.
