Olympics opening ceremony and the Americans |
All in all, a pretty good start for the 2004 Summer Games. There was huge
applause for Afghanistan on its return to Olympic competition after an
eight-year absence and with its first female athletes.
The entrance of the more than 500-member U.S. team drew cheers. But some
people also stood and put their thumbs down in an apparent show of
displeasure for the war in Iraq. Moments later, the Iraqis entered to a
roaring ovation.
The cheers of support for Iraq and Afghanistan were heartening. And the
'thumbs down' only shows how strangely disjointed and hypocritical so many
are. "We're glad you people are free, but we disdain the nation who freed
you."

They don't like Bush, thus the Thumbs Down. It's as clear as day.

They're not free. What the hell are you talking about? Afghanistan is
ruled by drug lords, war lords and the Taliban and you certainly can't
claim that Iraq is free. They are under the yoke of brutal military
occupati9on. Tens of thousands of innocent men , women and children
have been murdered by the occupying forces. Iraqis have been murdered
at far greater pace then they had been under Saddam.

there.So I certainly wouldn't imitate it."

You'd better tell all those Afghans who are registering to vote, in
spite of pressure from would-be Talibanis.
Tell it to the Afghan women and girls who are now, finally, able to
attend school.
Don't be disappointed if you get laughed at. A lot.
You really do seem to be a "half-empty" sort.

Really? See what the CIA World Factbook says about Afghanistan.
Check out http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/af.html
in the government section which says that the constitution is based
on the law of Islam. And exactly how many votes did Hamid Karzai
receive? Elections were supposed to be June 20th this year.
Afghanistan is a nation in transition. To say that Afghanis are
free is wishful thinking. In addition, Afghanistan derives 1/3 of
its GDP from opium trade, which is a problem that needs to be
addressed.
This is all according to the CIA at the web site I referenced above.
Maybe Afghanistan will be free sometime soon, but to state that the
Afghanis are free right now is a huge stretch of the imagination.
