Pastor Remains In Jail On Probation Violation

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A pastor convicted of having sex with a
13-year-old girl in his congregation three years ago returned to a
courtroom Friday to defend himself against a charge that he violated
probation by contacting the girl again.
The Rev. Alexie Kelly testified that he's had no deliberate contact
with the teenaged girl he was convicted of having sex with three years
ago.
Alexie Kelly, pastor of Little Rock Baptist Church, pleaded no contest
last March to having consensual sex with the girl and was sentenced to
six months in jail and three years on probation, including a
stipulation that he have no contact with his victim.
He was arrested last month, accused of violating his probation.
Prosecutors say he violated the terms of that probation several times
in several ways, including having deliberate contact with his victim.
Kelly's probation officer testified that, after a polygraph test,
Kelly admitted to contact with the girl, identified only as S.J.,
several times.
"He had held a sexual conversation with her on one occasion,"
probation officer ***** Morris said.
But the teenage victim, along with the pastor's wife, joined Kelly in
testifying that there was no contact.
Asked "Have you had contact?" S.J. said, "No, sir."
Kelly, handcuffed and shackled, told the court he has kept his
probation and reported the few occasions when he accidentally wound up
near the girl.
"I never said I had a sexual conversation with her," Kelly said. "He
told me I had a sexual conversation with her."
Kelly blamed the man who ran the polygraph test for what he calls a
misunderstanding.
Kelly's wife of 10 years backed her husband and said she had forgiven
him.
The hearing ended without a ruling, leaving Kelly in jail for at least
two more weeks.
Kelly's family and friends say he's paid for his crime and are
disappointed prosecutors won't put put this behind him.
"His counselor says one thing, he says another," said family friend,
Alfonso Haines. "I don't understand it all. It's a waste of time."
