Ex-Randolph priest sentenced for theft

The former pastor of Resurrection Church in Randolph was sentenced
this morning to five years' probation, 250 hours of community service,
and continued therapy for stealing $360,000 from the parish -- money
he is paying back through a series of jobs.
"I'm deeply grieved and truly sorry for any pain that my actions
caused and have led to this day," the Rev. William M. Naughton, 61,
told Superior Court Judge Joseph A. Falcone in Morristown. "I remain
determined to make total restitution for however long that may take."
Naughton, who lives in a community for retired priests in Chester,
pleaded guilty in October to one count of theft by deception,
admitting he stole from the parish between Jan. 1, 1996, and Feb. 1,
2001. Defense lawyer Peter N. Gilbreth told the judge that Naughton
spent the money on helping some needy people, but mainly stole to
assist a man named Harold B. Reid III, with whom the priest had a
brief sexual relationship with in the 1970s and remained a friend.
The judge said he believes that Naughton is truly remorseful and
quoted from a compassionate letter he received from Bishop Arthur J.
Serratelli, of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Paterson. It was
Serratelli who alerted law enforcement authorities to the theft when
he became bishop in 2004. Naughton has repaid $136,227 of the pilfered
funds, and Serratelli wrote the court that the cleric has a plan in
place to repay the rest that is acceptable to the diocese.
Gilbreth said that Naughton has struggled for years with conflicting
feelings about Reid and the theft, and will be continuing therapy that
also includes treatment for possible alcoholism.

Yes, my point is that this priest should be commended, because rather
than rape little boys in confessional booths, he stole hundreds of
thousands of dollars to give to his adult gay lover. That makes him
a model priest!
