YORK -- A Clover man who once worked as a handyman and mechanic at a
York County church was sentenced to 15 years in prison Thursday after
pleading no contest to four charges of sexual assault against minors.
Eric Colon Moore, 43, could have faced life in prison if convicted of
all 19 charges against him, said his lawyer, Gary Lemel.
Prosecutor Lisa Collins said she dismissed 15 charges to save four
child victims from having to testify in separate trials while securing
a long, non-parolable prison sentence. Victims of sexual assault are
understandably emotionally torn about testifying about abuse before a
jury of adults who are strangers, Collins said. The abuse happened in
2004 and before.
Prosecutors had physical evidence to go along with victim statements,
Collins said.
"The victims are no longer in danger from him," Collins said. "The
youngest will be an adult when he gets out."
In a no contest plea, a defendant admits there is evidence for a
conviction but does not admit guilt. It carries the same punishment as
a guilty plea. Moore must also register as a sex offender.
Moore, in jail since his arrest in 2004, claimed in court the "only
reason" he took the plea was to keep the victims from having to
testify.
"I know I didn't do nothing wrong," Moore said in court.
The victims' accusations against him are "their point of view," Moore
said.
Moore and his family moved to Clover from New York in 2001, Lemel
said. He worked odd jobs and in God's Kitchen ministry at New
Beginnings Baptist Church, the Rev. Samuel Thompson, church pastor,
said in court. The allegations against Moore did not show crimes
against children at the church or involving the church where Moore
worked, court records show.
"I don't know what goes on in people's secret lives, what goes on
behind closed doors," Thompson said in court. Some of Moore's family
members and a church trustee said in court Moore was a good man.
Judge John C. Hayes III accepted the plea deal and cap of 15 years,
telling Moore there may be people who fall under "Jekyll and Hyde
syndrome. This very well may be one of those cases."
