The structure and culture of the HRCC make it a magnet
for homosexuals and an amplifier for all manner of
bizzare sexual obsessions and behaviors. I'm sure that
wasn't the *plan* all those centuries ago, but it's
become what it's become regardless. The far more open
and decentralized nature of protestant churches, in
combination with allowing their priests to have normal
families, largely prevents the concentration of weirdness
we see in the HRCC.
Of course individual protestent preachers may fall victim
to obsession and naughtiness, but there's no institution to
amplify these trends. However, protestent/puritan obsession
with sexual 'sins' - often eclipsing the more relevant and
subtle aspects of christian theology - may somewhat dilute
the impact of a more open and socially normal institutional
structure. The protestant preachers spend a LOT of time
worrying about sexuallity and sexual morality - too much,
you'd think it was the whole religion. Bound to warp a few
of them ...
