Vicar I trusted stole my savings, says pensioner
Emma Dunlop
A FRAIL pensioner has been left with nothing after a vicar stole
thousands of pounds from her – leaving her with only £2.47 in savings.
Olive Hudson, 87, of Mastin Moor, Chesterfield, yesterday spoke
publicly for the first time about how she was duped into handing over
her bank details to Father Peter Skinner after he told her the money
would be used for the church.
But months later she realised the crooked vicar, who last week
admitted stealing the cash, had in fact been regularly dipping into
her life savings and had taken more than £3,000.
Now the pensioner, who lives in wardened care at The Willows
residential home in Norbriggs Road, has been left with nothing.
Skinner, 58, former Vicar of St Andrew's, Barrow Hill, Chesterfield,
stole £3,132 from Mrs Hudson between November 2002 and October 2004.
He pleaded guilty to nine counts of theft at Derby Crown Court, after
changing his original not-guilty plea when he insisted he had given
the money to the church's treasurer.
Judge John Burgess sentenced Skinner to 240 hours' unpaid work in the
community, telling him: "I hope that in time the shame you have
brought on yourself will prove to be a far greater punishment than I
could have done."
Now he could be booted out of the church following an inquiry by the
Diocese of York which is expected to call for him to be defrocked.
Mrs Hudson yesterday said the matter had left her extremely upset and
made her question her judgment in trusting others.
Despite this, she said if police ever recovered her savings she would
gladly still give them all to the church.
She said: "I think he should have been sent to prison for what he had
done. Then he could have reflected over what he had done to me.
"People have asked if I would forgive him, but I have said no, never.
I took him into my life. I don't have many friends, but when I do make
a friend I treat them well. He took everything from me, including my
dead husband's miner's pension. It is horrible.
"I treated him well, even paid for him to go on holiday, and this is
the way he repaid me. I just can't believe it. He really took me in
with his smooth ways.
"I genuinely thought he was looking out for me."
However, Mrs Hudson has said the matter will not change her view of
the Church.
"You just get some bad apples and he is one of them – that is all,"
she said. "You just don't expect a vicar to be the one doing this kind
of thing to you.
"I have my pension, but I have nothing saved. I had wanted all my
savings when I died to go to be donated to church causes like helping
those poor people in India. If they ever find my money I want them to
still give it to good causes, as I intended."
Skinner first visited Mrs Hudson to give her Communion because she
couldn't attend church due to crippling arthritis which has left her
with mobility difficulties. Over the years she gave him a number of
gifts and also gave him, for safe-keeping, her Lloyds TSB bank details
as well as her marriage certificate and her husband Reginald's death
certificate, with the understanding that when she died, any money left
could be used by him for the benefit of the church and good causes.
Skinner withdrew a total of £2,132 in small amounts from the account,
to which he had third party authorisation, in addition to paying a
cheque for £1,000 into his own bank account that was meant for church
funds.
By the time the thefts came to light Skinner had left for a new
position in St Thomas's church, Middlesbrough, where he now lives,
although he has since been suspended.
During his court case Skinner said he felt sorry for the victim but
that his finances were in a dire situation. Because of his actions he
is now set to lose his job and his home, a vicarage which came with
his position.
Skinner also served at St John the Baptist church, Staveley, and St
Columba, Inkersall. His future will be considered after consultation
within the Church of England clergy discipline procedure.
