Former Priest Sentenced On Child Porn Charges

LEESBURG, Va. -- A former Leesburg priest who pleaded no contest to
child pornography charges has been sentenced to two years probation.
The Rev. Robert Brooks was pastor of St. John the Apostle Catholic
Church when the Loudoun County Sheriff's Department learned that his
name was registered to a child pornography Web site. He was indicted
on state charges in February. Earlier this month, he pleaded no
contest to the charges to avoid a trial.
In court Monday, three parishioners said they consider Brooks to be a
splendid, generous man they admired and with whom they still wanted to
maintain friendships.
The judge could have given Brooks up to five years in prison but
sentenced him to a suspended three-year prison sentence and probation.
Brooks must also enter a sexual offenders treatment program.
The 73-year-old former priest resigned from his ministry in October.
Brooks had been a priest for 41 years. Besides serving as pastor at
St. John's, he also served at parishes in Falls Church, Annandale,
Alexandria and the Richmond suburb of Highland Springs.
Church officials said there was no evidence of sexual misconduct in
his background.
