It's likely that osama binladen's video was made in a last-ditched
effort to scare Americans after his efforts to murder us on a mass scale
failed due to US intelligence. When terrorists actually have a major
attack in the works, they seldom come on TV to warn the people they plan
to kill. And it certainly seems that a well-placed videotaped threat is
almost as useful in instilling fear as the murder of hundreds of
innocent civilians.
In that speech, binladen said that we hold the ability to keep ourselves
safe. Many think he meant that we should vote GW out of office, and
that might be a part of it. But I believe he meant much more than that.
To me, he meant that we need to build ourselves harems of wives the
way radical Islamists do. He meant that we need to force our wives to
cover themselves head to toe and bar them from being employed, the way
radical Islamists do. He meant that we need to devote ourselves to
study of the qur'an and spend the rest of our time plotting murder at
the expense of holding gainful employment, the way radical Islamists do.
He meant that we need to destroy the media as anything but an outlet
against those we hate, the way radical Islamists try to.
Clearly none of that will happen. So regardless of whether GW Bush wins
a second term or John Kerry is elected, we will face a threat from
terrorists. Comforted only, perhaps, in the knowledge that when
terrorists come on TV to threaten us it means they don't have any plans
in the works to kill us in the near future.
