Object: Parents take out ad chiding school for homosexual program
These parents have every right to be concerned about the content of
the discussion in question. What are these teachers trying to hide?
http://www.christianexaminer.com/Articles/Articles%20Apr07/Art_Apr07_01.html
DEERFIELD, Ill. - A group of Illinois parents took out a full-page
newspaper article in their local newspaper March 1 demanding that
Deerfield High School officials "rein in" the staff for promoting a
one-sided view of homosexuality.
According to the Chicago Tribune, the ad was paid for by the North
Shore Student Advocacy group, which wants the school to drop a
mandatory freshman panel discussion that delves into homosexual
issues. Concerned Women for America, a Christian-based public policy
organization, reported that school officials, upon completion of the
session, require students to sign a confidentiality agreement
promising not to tell anyone-including their own parents-about the
discussion.
Some parents complained the discussion, sponsored by the "Straight Gay
Alliance Network," featured personal stories from gay and lesbian
upperclassmen and included inappropriate discussions about high-risk
behaviors.
"This is unbelievable," said Matt Barber, policy director for Cultural
Issues with CWA. "It's not enough that students at Deerfield High are
being exposed to improper and offensive material relative to unhealthy
and high-risk homosexual behaviors, but they've essentially been told
by teachers to lie to their parents about it.
"This goes to the heart of the homosexual agenda. The professional
propagandists in the 'gay-rights' lobby know the method all too well.
If you can maintain control of undeveloped and impressionable youth
and spoon-feed them misinformation, lies and half-truths about
dangerous, disordered and extremely risky behaviors, then you can
control the future and ensure that those behaviors are not only fully
accepted, but celebrated. That's what homosexual activists from GSA
are attempting to do, and that's what DHS is clearly up to as well."

Isn't it obvious (see below).

Obviously the confidentiality agreement was intended to protect the
privacy of students who said something at the event but who might not
be comfortable talking about it to their own parents.

In England, two men who called Islam "wicked" were indicted and now
faced seven years in prison. The British law under which they were
charged blatantly says "truth" cannot be used as a defense to speech
that "stirs up racial hatred", a vague term that ripe for government

The Recorder of Leeds, Judge Norman Jones QC, warned the jury that the
case involved "both politics and issues relating to criminal law".
He said: "You will hear in the course of the evidence that is given
strong criticism and speeches on the Muslim religion and issues of
racism, together with criticism of elements of present government policy.
"Members of the jury, such criticism can sometimes raise conflicts in
people's minds.

try it as it is, that is the charges brought that the defendants have
committed criminal acts."

Things are going well. As you can see, I'm still hitting this newsgroup
from time to time.
No, I had to leave the band again..I took a promotion and a transfer to
another institution so I just don't have the time to give to the band.
Enjoying the nice weather, planting a few trees and plants around our house.
Not looking forward to the cutting grass part..:o)
Glad to hear things are going well.

Good news. But it should still scare the hell out of anyone who

It does scare me - and appals me too. While I have no time for the BNP
(British National Party), of which the accused is the leader, he has every
right, in my opinion, to voice his views, as long as he doesn't incite
others to take criminal action against his target. I find it surprising
that the CPS (Crown Prosecution Service) brought charges of inciting racial
hatred, since clearly what was said wasn't aimed at any race. Virtually
everyone in the UK knows very well that the BNP is a racist organisation,
and that the accused had Pakistanis in mind, but what everyone 'knows' is
not admissible evidence, when he is being tried on what he said. It's
difficult, however, to know what charges could have been brought against him
successfully, because our blasphemy laws only apply to the Church of England
(and one has to wonder how the C of E would have reacted had it been called
a 'wicked, vicious faith' - probably a 'holier-than-thou' sniff), and the
new Racial and Religious Act 2006 wouldn't cover it either, because it is
quite specific in its limitations: "A person who uses threatening words or
behaviour, or displays any written material which is threatening ... if he
intends thereby to stir up religious hatred". This removed the abusive and
insulting concept, and required the intention - and not just the
possibility - of stirring up religious hatred. See:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Racial_and_Religious_Hatred_Act_2006
So, alt.atheism is safe ... for the moment. :)

DEERFIELD, Ill. - A group of Illinois parents took out a full-page

Deerfield High School officials "rein in" the staff for promoting
a
one-sided view of homosexuality.

I can't wait until this sort of thing is considered a crime like it
is
in Europe. We'll be so much better off when free speech takes a back
seat to political correctness.

Please, tell me where in Europe.
I've been living for more than 14 years in Austria and have contacts
with friends in France, England, Germany, Italy and Sweden and I've
never heard of such a thing.

In England, two men who called Islam "wicked" were indicted and now
faced seven years in prison. The British law under which they were
charged blatantly says "truth" cannot be used as a defense to speech
that "stirs up racial hatred", a vague term that ripe for government
abuse if I've ever heard one.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/bradford/6105946.stm

The Recorder of Leeds, Judge Norman Jones QC, warned the jury that the
case involved "both politics and issues relating to criminal law".

He said: "You will hear in the course of the evidence that is given
strong criticism and speeches on the Muslim religion and issues of
racism, together with criticism of elements of present government
policy.

"Members of the jury, such criticism can sometimes raise conflicts in
people's minds.

"It is very important that the jury who are selected to try this case
try it as it is, that is the charges brought that the defendants have
committed criminal acts."

They were cleared:

Good news. But it should still scare the hell out of anyone who
cherishes a free society that they were even charged and tried to begin
with.

The fact that you still have blasphemy laws at all is also appalling.

So, alt.atheism is safe ... for the moment. :)

Don't be so sure. Plenty of people here intentionally try and stir up
religious hatred. I'm just waiting for the day some American says
something on the internet that qualifies as an offense in Britain (but
which is not only legal in America but specifically protected by the
highest law of the land) and the British authorities try and prosecute.
It will be an interesting legal debate, if nothing else.

Power to the people.
FREEDOM SPEECH for the MASSES!

If you want to be taken seriously, J Young, how about using serious
source?

DEERFIELD, Ill. - A group of Illinois parents took out a full-page
newspaper article in their local newspaper March 1 demanding that
Deerfield High School officials "rein in" the staff for promoting a
one-sided view of homosexuality.

As opposed to christians's one-sided view of homosexuality? Like
"homosexuality is immoral, is deviant... will send to hell". As in Pat
Robertson's view? Or, my favorite, Ted Haggard's view?

According to the Chicago Tribune, the ad was paid for by the North
Shore Student Advocacy group, which wants the school to drop a
mandatory freshman panel discussion that delves into homosexual
issues. Concerned Women for America, a Christian-based public policy

Some parents complained the discussion, sponsored by the "Straight Gay
Alliance Network," featured personal stories from gay and lesbian
upperclassmen and included inappropriate discussions about high-risk
behaviors.

What's inappropriate about that? Don't you think that it's important
that people know what's dangerous to them?
Why is it OK for Americans to let kids own guns but not to give them
proper sexual education?

"This is unbelievable," said Matt Barber, policy director for Cultural
Issues with CWA. "It's not enough that students at Deerfield High are
being exposed to improper and offensive material relative to unhealthy

A real can of worms, the parent may teach their kids, that gay sex
is natural, and heterosexually is a sin. Do you support not allowing
the school to teach the opposite? Or the school could teach children
to despise gay people, would you support that?
A parent has a right to teach his children anything, but society has
the right to teach it's version of right and wrong. After hearing all
sides of the question, the children have the right to decide for them
selves. To prohibit teaching is to promote ignorance. If in your
opinion the school is teaching a lie, then tell your children, what
you believe is correct. Don't deny my children the right to hear all
sides.

is natural, and heterosexually is a sin. Do you support not allowing
the school to teach the opposite? Or the school could teach children
to despise gay people, would you support that?

Or the school could stay the hell out of it and just teach my kid to
read, write, and add, a job they've been failing more and more in the
last decade or so. Once they've achieved the basics and they're not
turning out illiterates who can't even read their own diplomas, then
they can worry about using the schools as a social experiment.

Don't deny my children the right to hear all
sides.

That isn't what I was addressing, anyway. I was addressing the comment
that it's okay for the school to make kids sign things saying they won't
tell their parents what's being taught because the parents are too
stupid to bother with in the first place.

The reason for school programs that promote tolerance is so that
kids who would otherwise be harassed can get through the day without
being so scared that they can't learn at all. I.e., it is so that
*all* the kids can learn the "basics".

I'd prefer it the old way, where *most* kids learned the basics as
opposed to now where we waste so much time on "diversity" and
"sensitivity" and "tolerance" to the point where ever increasing numbers
of kids can't do a simple algebra problem.

A hell of a lot of people never learned how to do simple algebra
problems. Big deal, only a few occupations require it.
The problem of a lack of tolerance, sensitivity, and dislike of
diversity, is learned from parents. Correcting that ignorance is more
important than every one being good at math. A ten dollar calculator
will do all the math most people will ever need. Most jobs that
require math have tables that solve the problems most people will
need.
