Actually, I live on the other side of the Houston area from Dave...and
the shortest possible pedal between where I live and where he lives
would be something like 40 miles. That's one reason I've done it only
a couple of times. (Yes, Dave, the other times I've been by, I drove. :)

What is Stalking?

STALKING - pattern of words or conduct that is intended to cause and does cause
the targeted person to fear death, assault, bodily injury, or CSC upon the
person or member of the person's family (reasonable person standard).

HARASSMENT - pattern of intentional substantial and unreason- able intrusion
which causes the targeted person to suffer mental distress (reasonable person
standard). A suspect must be provided notice that contact is unwanted.

PSYCHOLOGICAL AND BEHAVIORAL PROFILE OF STALKERS

Simple Obsession Stalkers:
Simple obsession stalkers represent 70 to 80% of all stalking cases.
Characteristics include:
1 personality disorders.
2 emotional immaturity, jealousy and extreme insecurity.
3 inability to succeed in relationships by socially-accepted means.
4 dominating and intimidating victims in order to bolster own self-esteem.
5 biggest fear is losing the victim.
6 believing their lives have no worth without the victim.
7 turning to violence in order to control every aspect of the victim's life

STALKING BEHAVIOR PATTERNS AND CYCLES
1 Attempts at intimidation often begin in the form of an unjustified, jealous
and inappropriate intrusion into the victim's life.

2 Contacts become more numerous and intrusive over time, until such conduct
becomes a persistent pattern of harassment.

3 Harassment may escalate to threats

4 In some cases, offenders are even willing to kill their victims and themselves
in a last, desperate attempt to dominate the victim

What Can I Do?

While a stalking victim may not be in imminent danger, the potential always
exists. Making a contingency plan may help. Suggested items to include in such a
plan are:

Take all threats seriously.

Travel with others or inform a friend of your departure and expected arrival
times.

Report all suspicious activity to law enforcement.

Keep notes, answering machine tapes or other items that document the stalkers
actions.

Alert critical people, who may be useful in formulating a contingency plan, such
as: law enforcement, employers, family, friends, or neighbors, and security
personnel.

Preventive Measures:

Install solid core doors with dead bolts on all exterior doors of your home.

Install adequate outside lighting.

Trim back bushes and vegetation around residence.

Maintain an unlisted phone number.

Notify local law enforcement, but also keep a written log of harassing calls and
any answering machine tapes of calls with the stalker's voice and messages.

Treat any threats as legitimate and inform law enforcement immediately.

Vary travel routes, stores and restaurants, etc., which are regularly used.
Limit time walking, jogging, alone etc.

Inform a trusted neighbor or coworker about the situation. Provide them with a
photo or description of the suspect and any possible vehicles he/she may drive.

If residing in an apartment with an on-site property manager, provide the
manager with a picture of the suspect.

Have co-workers screen all calls and visitors.

Although it is tempting to dismiss stalking behavior in the hopes it will stop,
stalking can be a very serious and potentially dangerous offence. Even without
the possible threat of violence, stalkers can instill fear and anxiety in those

Be Alert To Common Traits of Stalkers

Stalkers display an obsessive personality.

They are not just interested in, but totally obsessed with the person they are
pursuing. Their every waking thought centers on the victim, and every plan the
stalker has for the future involves the victim.

Along with obsessive thinking, they also display other psychological or
personality problems and disorders. They may suffer from erotomania, paranoia,
schizophrenia, and delusional thinking. According to Professor R. Meloy, "these
stalkers have rigid personalities and maladaptive styles. These disorders in
themselves are very stable and not treatable." There are drugs to treat certain
specific mental disorders, but stalkers, when given the choice, seldom continue
with their medication or treatment.

Stalkers are above average in intelligence and are usually smarter than the run
of the mill person with mental problems.

They will go to great lengths to obtain information about their victims or to
find victims who have secretly moved. They have been known to hack into
computers, tap telephone lines, take jobs at public utilities that allow them
access to the victims or information about the victims, and even to travel
thousands of miles and spend thousands of dollars to gain information about or
find their victims. Stalkers many times use their intelligence to throw others
off their trail.

Few stalkers can see how their actions are hurting others.

They display other sociopathic thinking in that they cannot learn from
experience, and they don't believe society's rules apply to them. Most stalkers
don't think they're really threatening, intimidating, or even stalking someone
else.

Stalkers, like rapists, want absolute control over their victims. They don't
regard what they're doing as a crime, or even wrong.

Stalkers many times have a mean streak and will become violent when frustrated.

How violent? Often deadly.

The above traits remind us that much of stalking involves harassment and
annoyance, but never forget that stalkers can also be extraordinarily dangerous.

Although the majority of cases do not end in murder or grave bodily injury,
enough do every year that victims should never brush aside the possibility.
Victims of stalking should never take the crime lightly....

Look carefully again at the traits below and be wary if someone seems to fit
these.

1. Won't take no for an answer
2. Has an obsessive personality
3. Above average intelligence
4. No or few personal relationships
5. Lack of embarrassment or discomfort at actions
6. Low self esteem
7. Sociopathic thinking

Serial Stalkers

Although many victims of stalking may feel that their stalkers have chosen them
because they represent something unique and desirable, and that the stalker is
fixated on and possessed with only them, this often isn't the case. Detectives
often find that if a complete background investigation is made into the stalkers
past there are often other cases of prior stalkings.

What percentage of stalkers are serial stalkers? Experts say that more than
half of the stalkers in America have been involved in prior incidents of
stalking. Psychiatrists cannot accurately predict when the behavior will stop
or re-occur but they know that about two-thirds of those showing obsessive
behavior have had prior episodes.

penal Code Sec. 42.072 - 1997. STALKING.

(a) A person commits an offense if the person, on more than one occasion and
pursuant to the same scheme or course of conduct that is directed specifically
at another person, knowingly engages in conduct, including following the other
person, that:

(1) the actor knows or reasonably believes the other person will regard as
threatening:

(A) bodily injury or death for the other person;

(B) bodily injury or death for a member of the other person's family or
household; or

(C) that an offense will be committed against the other person's property;

(2) causes the other person or a member of the other person's family or
household to be placed in fear of bodily injury or death or fear that an offense
will be committed against the other person's property; and

(3) would cause a reasonable person to fear:

(A) bodily injury or death for himself or herself;

(B) bodily injury or death for a member of the person's family or household; or

(C) that an offense will be committed against the person's property.

(b) An offense under this section is a Class A misdemeanor, except that the
offense is a felony of the third degree if the actor has previously been
convicted under this section.

(c) In this section, "family," "household," and "member of a household" have the
meanings assigned by Chapter 71, Family Code.

Added by Acts 1997, 75th Leg., ch 1, & 1, eff. Jan. 28, 1997. Amended by Acts
1999, 76th Leg., ch. 62, & 15.02(e), eff. Sept. 1, 1999.

SB 139, which went into effect on September 1, 2001, increases the penalties for
stalking crimes. Pursuant to the new law, violations for stalking now carry
felony penalties. The statute also amends the definition of the crime of
harassment to include electronic communications.

During the Revolution, in which the United States won it's independence from
Brittain, Anonymity was crucial to promoting the exchange of ideas. The
principles of government, on which this nation was founded, were presented
in a brilliant discourse entitled "The Federalist Papers". Newspapers of the
time printed editorials without disclosing the identity of the author. This
was necessary to protect them from police action by the Tories.

Anonymous writings, publication with pen names, is still legal in the United
States. It is crucial to preserving our right to free speech which is the
first protection of all our other rights and freedoms.

We allow you the freedom to disagree. You are free to write why you believe
free speech should be abolish. However; You are not free to use the tactics
you have been using.

There is a tort called "Public disclosure of private facts". You and Logan
Villa have utilized this in your attempts to stifle my exercise of my free
speech. You persist in disclosing my name and my employment without my
permission to do so. My posts have always associated me with INFORMED
CITIZENS. Which is a distinct and separate entity from my employer. I have

A review of the speakers Rice has brought to town, noticing Rice University

This newsgroup is alt.abortion. It isn't alt.jesus.is.lord, or any other name

connection with the newsgroup's purpose. Bothering other newsgroups with
