An Ipsos-MORI survey has rather surprisingly revealed that
three-quarters of Northern Ireland residents say they are tolerant of
lesbians, gay men and bisexuals and 88 percent believe there should be
no discrimination against them.

83 percent of Catholics said they were "very accepting" of gay men,

Might have something to do with the laxness of the Catholic layperson. They
tend to be more about rituals at mass and don't really carry strong
convictions into their secular life.

abortion but are not against gays but that Italians don't care about
abortion, but are anti-gay. I wonder why? Never figured it out.

You seem to have misread the article - it does not say that Irish
catholics dislike protestants more than they dislike gays - it says
that Irish catholics are more tolerant of gays than Irish protestants are.

Wrong again. There is nothing in that article about Irish Catholics'
attitudes towards Protestants. It is entirely about the difference in
each religions communities attitudes towards homosexuals.
