Poll: Majority of Catholics Want Abortion Illegal, Churchgoers More Likely |
Led by His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI, Catholics remain the finest
people to grace this earth. No people do more for the downtrodden (
e.g. Catholic Charities ) or fight harder for those who cannot speak
for themselves.
http://www.lifenews.com/nat2794.html
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- A new poll conducted jointly by Le
Moyne College and Zogby International finds that a majority of
Catholics want abortion to be illegal. The poll also finds that active
churchgoing Catholics are more likely to support prohibiting abortions
than those who are more nominal and never attend church.
When asked if "all abortions should be illegal" 50 percent of
Catholic adults in the U.S. agreed while 49 percent disagreed. About 1
percent of respondents were undecided in the poll.
But, the divide regarding abortion is between those who attend church
services every week or more and those who attend less than weekly.
Among those who never attend Mass only 30% believe all abortions should
be illegal, the survey found while 60 percent of those who attend mass
weekly or more believe all abortions should be illegal.
The poll also found that Catholics continue to be pleased with the new
Pope, who has taken especially strong stances against abortion,
embryonic stem cell research and euthanasia.
Most respondents (83%) agreed (45% strongly, 39% somewhat) that
Benedict XVI is doing a good job leading the Catholic Church.
Previously polls have shown that Catholic Americans take a pro-life
position on abortion.
An April 2005 Gallup survey found a strong majority of Catholics
believe the Catholic Church should retain its view against abortion.
Approximately 59 percent of those polled favor the church's pro-life
stance while just 37 percent of respondents opposed it. Catholics who
attend church on a weekly basis were more likely to back the church's
pro-life position, by a 69 to 29 percent margin.
Zogby International conducted interviews of 1,505 Catholics chosen
nationwide from a Zogby compiled database of Roman Catholics self
identified from previous polls.
All calls were made from Zogby International headquarters in Utica, New
York, from 10/5/06 thru 10/10/06. The margin of error is +/- 2.6
percentage points.

The "downtrodden" being "fought for" unfortunately excludes any kid
who has a chance to be adopted by a nice, respectable gay couple who
would provide a good home for the kid, as the Catholic Church would
rather have the kid kept in an institution.

When the Roman Church becomes a legal authority in this country, they'll
deserve being listened to...and laughed at.

Just look at their payouts to the victims of child molestation:
he nation's largest Roman Catholic archdiocese said Friday it will
pay $60 million to settle 45 sex abuse lawsuits, the largest payout
yet by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and among the biggest
resulting from the molestation crisis that has plagued the church.
...
Sex abuse by Roman Catholic priests has cost the U.S. church at
least $1.5 billion since 1950.

I worked for Catholic Charities in a residence for the developmentally
disabled when I was in college. One of the residents got his girlfriend
pregnant, and the agency quietly arranged for her to have an abortion.

Here's the Catholic Church's dirty little secret - it teaches that
*all* abortions are mortal sins, even those to save the woman's life.
But what's funny about this poll cited by IBen/JYoung is that only 50%
of Catholics accept their church's teaching on abortion. Pope Benadryl
is falling down on the job.
