Pope Benedict endorses adult stem-cell research as respecting human life |
His Holiness, who is blessed by God and is infallible, has decreed adult
stem-cell research as a viable option for further study. All Catholics, and
other decent people, should adopt this philosophy.
http://www.catholic.org/international/international_story.php?id=21301
CASTEL GANDOLFO, Italy (Catholic Online) - Pope Benedict XVI endorsed adult
stem-cell research, urging Catholic scientific institutions to increase
their efforts and establish closer working relationships with others in the
field to promote breakthroughs that can relieve needless human suffering.
Speaking Sept. 16 at his summer residence here to participants at an
international congress, the pope said that the Catholic Church favors
advanced biological research, just as it has throughout its history.

That's nice, but if he is "infallible", how did he manage to ***** off
the Muslim world a few days ago by not clearly indicating that he was
quoting some ancient nut, not agreeing with said nut?

Because the Muslim world is filled with idiots and other assorted savages;
who obviously shouldn't be expected to understand anything. His Holiness was
addressing an audience of Catholics; who knew exactly what the Pope was
saying.

If you'd ever have visited any part of the "Muslim world" that is not
an active war zone due to the U.S. invading it, you just might have a
ghost of a chance of realizing how idiotic you sound - most of the
people you'll meet are very nice, warm, and friendly. If the pope
really was "infallible", he would have realized that with reporters
present, his comments just might be taken out of context.
Also, you failed "Cathoic Dogma 101" since papal infallibility is
supposed to apply only to statements made "ex cathedra" and these
are rarely uttered, and when they are uttered, they are about
theological questions of the "how many angels can dance on the
the head of a pin" variety - something that nobody would ever by
able to test empirically.

It's very easy to ***** of Muslims. They still live in the 12th century

I take it you've never met an ordinary Muslim. I have - even some gay
ones who like to drink alchoholic beverages and eat pork. They joked
that they were in so much trouble due to their sexual orienation, that
the rest of it didn't matter. :-)
If you visit a Muslim country, you'll find that most of the people you
meet are reasonable. You know, like those Americans who go to church
on Sunday because the family expects it and then spend the rest of the
week ignoring their religion.
Of course the Muslims have their religious nuts, just as we have
Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell, but these nuts are very much in
the minority (even if the inmates are running the asylum in a few
countries).

What "sick freak"? It's not like they were alchohics or had medical
problems due to their diet.

The mountain K2 is in a Muslim country. I guess you would not care
to see it. :-) Here are some photos from this country:

Since you won't go there, you have no idea what they might say (and you
won't hear what they might say if you stay in the U.S. because the
average person cannot afford his own private TV channel, and in the
poorer countries, most people don't even have a telephone.)
But then, I don't see mainstream Christians in the U.S. protesting
Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, or Freddie Phelps. They might roll
their eyes if someone mentions those guys but they generally won't
bring them up either.
You know, like those Americans who go to church on Sunday

You have a serious reading comprehension problem - where did I say
there was anything wrong with spending an hour a week at some church
to keep peace in the family and then forgetting about it the rest of
the week? In fact, "keeping mom happy" and otherwise not taking the
thing very seriously is a perfectly valid reason to go to a church.
Of course the Muslims have their religious nuts, just as we have
Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell, but these nuts are very much in
the minority (even if the inmates are running the asylum in a few

No comment on that, eh? :-)

Well, a visit to Alexandria or Rhodes might be worth the trip but not to

There's really nothing to see there at all.
Now a visit to the defunct Hanging Gardens of Babylon probably isn't

Maybe sombody should talk to the Greeks about the Colossus.
Shouldn't be a problem to do it again, just because.
Some years ago there was Japanese project announced for

Not quite. Didja catch the Discovery Channel or History Channel show
on bringing up chunks of the Great Lighthouse from nearby waters,
where it collapsed during the earthquake?
They have verified that the stones and statues were indeed part of the
lighthouse.

There is that.
A pity that Angkor Wat is not listed amongst the World Wonders, though
it is now considered a major international historical site.
It's one of two things I want to see most in Asia -- that and the
terra cotta warriors in the PRC. Those also continue to fascinate me.

Well, I've been to Olympia and I can assure you that not a trace of the
Statue of Zeus remains.
The ruins of the temple which once contained the statue still exist but
they're sorta unremarkable (as ruins go) and consist mainly of the
foundations. They're are not particularly enhanced by the knowledge that
a rather large statue once stood at the site.
The local museum has a 1/16th (or so) scale reproduction of how it might
have looked - nobody really knows fershur - but the reproduction could
have been installed in any museum anywhere in the world without adding
much to, or detracting much from, the experience.
Given an either/or choice, visit Delphi and skip Olympia.
-snip-
Now a visit to the defunct Hanging Gardens of Babylon probably isn't
even worth the trip. Not only is there nothing to see (folks aren't
even sure exactly where they were), but you'll probably be kidnapped -
if an IED doesn't get you first.
There is that.
A pity that Angkor Wat is not listed amongst the World Wonders, though
it is now considered a major international historical site.
Well, it hardly could be - not having been constructed until a millenium
or so after Herodotus or Antipater or whoever it was put together the
"Wonders of the Ancient World" list.
Angkor Wat probably qualifies as a "wonder" but not of the "Ancient World"
It's one of two things I want to see most in Asia -- that and the
terra cotta warriors in the PRC. Those also continue to fascinate me.
Ayutthaya in Thailand is the equal of Angkor Wat - but somehow gets
overlooked.
Perhaps because it was kinda "always there" rather than being
"rediscovered" in the jungles and thus lacks the "lost city" mythos.
Peace and justice,
.

Obviously not Ancient, in the Yurrupeen or Middle East sense, but
pretty old at that.

I spent an entire day in Ayudhya back in 1967. Not even on a tour --
just went with a professor of History from Chulalongkorn University in
Bangkok, and a USAF LTC I was visiting.
The slides I have kept all these years are breathtaking!

Yeah -- that too.
If you like, sometime, I'll loan you my slides. On the day I was
there, they had just opened a new chamber underground, and I got some
of the first pictures of the artwork. And a great shot of me under a
banyana tree that I may have enlarged and framed someday.

How would you know? You just mentioned your outright refusal to visit the

Pssstttt...., there is a new thing for getting news out, perhaps you
have not heard of it, it is called the Internet and news media and
satellite news and radio. May want to enlighten yourself. Travel also
works wonders talking to others of their life experiences.

What a hypocrite--didn't you just reply to someone who suggested you visit
a Muslim country with the indignant response, "Ain't going to happen my
friend. There is NOTHING in any Muslim country I would care to see."?

Want me to repeat it? I WILL NOT TRAVEL TO ANY MUSLIM COUNTRY
You got to be a real dumb ***** ya know? There is this religion that does
not like Americans and don't like Christians and Don't like the
President of the USA. Yet you think I should spend American dollars to
travel to a country and ask their opinion. Public schooled weren't ya!
Whoooossshhh.....,

LOL! Whatcha suppose an Abrams costs?
Personally, I don't attach any association between the Sphinx and
anti-American fundamentalism anymore than Stonehenge represents the Queen of
England.
