Pope urges UN responsibility
POPE Benedict XVI has called on the United Nations to live up to its
responsibilities and promote justice, solidarity and peace in the world.
The world must show "courage and faith in God and mankind to choose the path
of peace," said the head of the Roman Catholic Church in his first New
Year's message from the Vatican.
In his appeal the pope included "everybody - individuals, peoples,
international organisations and world powers".
The United Nations in particular "must again be aware of its
responsibilities to promote the values of justice, solidarity and peace, in
a world more and more marked by the huge phenomenon of globalisation," he
said at Saint Peter's Basilica.
Benedict said that in the face of injustice and violence in various regions
of the world and "new and insidious threats to peace, like terrorism,
nihilism and fanatic fundamentalism", it was necessary to work together for
peace.
The mass was attended by leading members of the Roman Catholic Church and
diplomats.

The world must show "courage and faith in God and mankind to choose the path

First, he said that he wants the UN to promote peace, justice, and
solidarity, and then he says that he wants them to promote intolerance,
hatred, and injustice. Somehow, I think that the second is more
honest.
In his appeal the pope included "everybody - individuals, peoples,
international organisations and world powers".
And they should all work to ignore the Catholic Church, and prevent
them from spreading their oppressive and theocratic ideals.
The United Nations in particular "must again be aware of its
responsibilities to promote the values of justice, solidarity and peace, in
a world more and more marked by the huge phenomenon of globalisation," he
said at Saint Peter's Basilica.
For peace, justice, and solidarity, the Catholic Church needs to be
ignored and freedom must be promoted.
Benedict said that in the face of injustice and violence in various regions
of the world
Often promoted or aided by the Catholic Church, since they believe in
fostering injustice by oppressing anyone that is not of their religion.
and "new and insidious threats to peace, like terrorism,
nihilism and fanatic fundamentalism", it was necessary to work together for
peace.
Fine, then the Catholic Church can learn to mind its own business and
stop trying to force their beliefs and oppression on everyone else.
The mass was attended by leading members of the Roman Catholic Church and
diplomats.

That would be nice, but the U.N. has drowned in it's own bloated and
corrupt bureaucracy. It has no moral authority, but, fortunately, it's
not the only agency that has the means to do what the pope has asked...

.... the Catholic Church has a unified global presence and Benedict XVI
is her leader; more and more the world will be looking to him as THE
moral authority.
The United Nations in particular "must again be aware of its
responsibilities to promote the values of justice, solidarity and peace, in
a world more and more marked by the huge phenomenon of globalisation," he
said at Saint Peter's Basilica.
Most of the leaders of the U.N. go home to their own corrupt and
oppressive dictatorships, kingdoms and theocracies. What can we expect
of the U.N. as a whole?
Benedict said that in the face of injustice and violence in various regions
of the world and "new and insidious threats to peace, like terrorism,
nihilism and fanatic fundamentalism", it was necessary to work together for
peace.
I hate to be so cynical, but I have no doubt that folks around here are
simply going to mock the pope for calling for peace, justice and
solidarity; when that point is reached, what hope do we have?

Its not that. It is that the UN is made of of
nations who must volunteer to do good things if
good things are to get done.
Bush is not one of those, nor is our GOP Congress.
We lie ourselves into a war, but the genocide in

True enough, I suppose. They must stop using the U.N. to foreward their
own interests; then I suppose it might be salvagable. (You can't deny
what I said about the bureaucracy, however)
Bush is not one of those, nor is our GOP Congress.
We lie ourselves into a war, but the genocide in
Sudan continues.
If memory serves, the U.S. has spoken out the loudest against the
tragedy in Sudan (Colin Powell called it 'genocide', but after lengthy
deliberations, U.N. 'experts' decided that he was incorrect) Anyhow, it
is not within the U.S. 's strategic interests to intervene in Sudan
(can you imagine the outcry if they carried out another 'unilateral'
action?) It is up to the U.N. and so far they have found every excuse
to do nothing.
We can't even stop the car bombings in Bagdad.
If Bush is not going to listen to the pope, who?,
is Putin? The thugs battling each other in
Africa?
The UN has no troops, except those lent to them.
Tell me about it; I'm Canadian, and our leaders contribute troops to
the U.N. not really because they give a hoot about peacekeeping; but to
enhance their prestige in the General Assembly.
The UN has no will to do anything except the will
of those members who do have troops.
But, even those are at the disposal of the Security Council; whose
permenant seats are held by self-serving nations, and rotating seats
doled out in turn to some of the most dispicable and oppressive regimes
on Earth.
If we who
are the most bellicose nation in the world with
the most money spent by any nationon military and
arms can't deal with Iraq, who are you kidding
about the UN?
We seem to have a bigger problem than we originally thought; The U.N.
has no will to do anything; and no means carry it out even if it did.
And the pope. He addresses the UN. He needs
address specific world leaders, by name.
Its like trying to talk to a rich man by
addressing his dog.
Well, you and I will agree that the pope needs to stay out of the
internal political affairs of all the nations; The U.N. is SUPPOSED to
be the forum where these issues can be addressed.
